Brian Kelly named Dodd Trophy Coach of the Week after win over Ole Miss

Kelly earned a signature win over the Rebels on Saturday.

LSU football coach [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] earned his biggest win on the Bayou yet Saturday when his Tigers took down No. 7 Ole Miss. That win ended the Rebels undefeated start to the season and puts LSU in the driver’s seat in the SEC West, at least until it faces Alabama in two weeks.

After the massive win, Kelly brought home an honorific as he was named The Dodd Trophy Coach of the Week after guiding LSU to a 6-2 (4-1 SEC) start to his first season.

Per the official release, “The Dodd Trophy Coach of the Week award honors a football coach who led his team to a significant victory during the previous week, while also embodying the award’s three pillars of scholarship, leadership and integrity.”

“This was a signature win for Coach Kelly and LSU football in his first season with the Tigers,” said Jim Terry, chairman of the Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year Foundation. “Coach Dodd would tell you a win like this is a culmination of months of preparation, and a commitment to excellence on both sides of the ball.”

LSU is off to a fantastic start in what was supposed to be a rebuilding year, and this will likely not be the last award like this Kelly receives if his team continues to perform the way it has the past two weeks.

Mario Cristobal named to mid-season watch list for The Dodd Trophy

Mario Cristobal was named to the mid-season watchlist for The Dodd Trophy, given to the nation’s top coach.

Mario Cristobal was named to the midseason watch list for the 2021 Dodd Trophy, officials from the Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year Foundation and Peach Bowl, Inc., announced on Thursday. He’s one of 16 coaches from across the country to be named to the list.

According to the foundation, The Dodd Trophy is college football’s most coveted coaching award, celebrating the head coach of a team that enjoys success on the field while also stressing the importance of scholarship, leadership and integrity – the three pillars of legendary coach Bobby Dodd’s philosophy.

β€œEach of these coaches embody the scholarship, leadership and integrity that Coach Dodd stressed every day of his coaching career,” said Jim Terry, chairman of the Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year Foundation. β€œThis award is more than just winning on the field, and every one of these coaches cares deeply about seeing his players grow and mature as young men, in addition to winning football games. That is what The Dodd Trophy is all about.”

The award circuit started to notice Cristobal this season after Oregon defeated then-No. 3 Ohio State Sept. 11, becoming the first road team to win at Ohio Stadium since 2017.

The other coaches on the watch list are:

Jamey Chadwell – Coastal Carolina
Dave Clawson – Wake Forest
Ryan Day – Ohio State
Dave Doeren – NC State
Kirk Ferentz – Iowa

Jimbo Fisher – Texas A&M
James Franklin – Penn State
