Florida stays at No. 14 on The Athletic’s SEC vibe check after beating UCF

Florida’s win over UCF raised spirits for some in Gainesville, but The Athletic’s SEC vibe check disagrees. The Gators stay put at No. 14 after Week 6.

Despite the “vibe” in Gainesville going up following a 24-13 win over UCF this weekend, the Florida Gators remain at No. 14 in the latest SEC vibe check rankings from The Athletic.

Maybe it’s because Georgia Bulldogs writer Seth Emerson compiled this list, but leaving Florida in the bottom three after so many other teams collapsed feels intentionally disrespectful. The copy also contains some heavy sarcasm.

“Billy Napier fights on! It does seem to just be delaying the inevitable, but hey, give credit where it’s due,” Emerson wrote, without giving much credit where it was supposedly due.

To rub some salt in the wound, Emerson has Auburn jumping up three spots to No. 13 — one place ahead of Florida — for seemingly no good reason.

“By scoring margin, it was Auburn’s worst loss of the season,” he wrote. “By actual performance, it was the best loss, validation that when this team doesn’t turn the ball over it can be halfway competitive.”

Got it. “Best losses” and “halfway competitive” are better than actual wins.

Emerson got some things right, though, like moving Vanderbilt into the top spot after a gargantuan upset of Alabama — after beating Georgia the week prior.

Texas A&M moving into the No. 2 spot seems right, too. If a 31-point victory over a top-10 team isn’t getting the vibes up, it’s hard to figure out what is.

It looks like Florida will have to do something mighty impressive to break into the top 10 at any point. If that happens, maybe The Athletic will provide some real analysis instead of cheap shots at Billy Napier. (Probably not, though.)

Week 4 SEC vibe check rankings

  1. Vanderbilt Commodores (3-2, 1-1)
  2. Texas A&M Aggies (5-1, 3-0)
  3. Arkansas Razorbacks (4-2, 2-1)
  4. Texas Longhorns (5-0, 1-0)
  5. Ole Miss Rebels (5-1, 1-1)
  6. Georgia Bulldogs (4-1, 2-1)
  7. Alabama Crimson Tide (4-1, 1-1)
  8. Tennessee Volunteers (4-1, 1-1)
  9. Kentucky Wildcats (3-2, 1-2)
  10. Oklahoma Sooners (4-1, 1-1)
  11. LSU Tigers (4-1, 1-0)
  12. Missouri Tigers (4-1, 1-1)
  13. Auburn Tigers (2-4, 0-3)
  14. Florida Gators (3-2, 1-1)
  15. South Carolina Gamecocks (3-2, 1-2)
  16. Mississippi State Bulldogs (1-4, 0-2)

Shams Charania announced that he is joining ESPN as the replacement for Adrian Wojnarowski

Shams is officially ESPN’s replacement for Woj.

While it is not exactly a huge surprise, but Shams Charania will replace his former mentor Adrian Wojnarowski as the lead NBA insider at ESPN.

Charania, alongside some interesting internal candidates who already worked for the company, was immediately considered a frontrunner for the position once Woj had shockingly announced he was retiring from sports media to instead work as a general manager for the St. Bonaventure men’s basketball team.

In the aftermath of Woj stepping away from his duties as a reporter, Charania was the obvious choice as his successor and was the first to break some of the biggest stories in recent weeks — including the Karl-Anthony Towns trade to the New York Knicks.

Charania will have the same position title that Woj had while at ESPN.

During his time at The Athletic, meanwhile, Charania made very frequent appearance alongside Pat McAfee on ESPN’s television broadcasting.

Even if the hiring of Charania is not particularly stunning, it is still an important decision from all parties involved and one that will impact many people across the sports media industry as well as basketball fans around the world.

Win over UCF gives Gators much-needed boost in The Athletic’s re-rank

The Athletic’s re-rank for college football after Week 6 moved the Gators up to the same spot as USA TODAY Sports.

Week 6 of the 2024 college football season was a wild one that saw a handful of top-10 upsets — all in Southeastern Conference play — that shook up the national landscape and the playoff picture.

Meanwhile, the Florida Gators took care of business in the Swamp, fending off the invading UCF Knights, 34-23, to earn their third win in five tries this fall. The victory also gave Billy Napier his first winning record since before the LSU Tigers loss last season.

The triumph was an important one as the program eyes a .500 finish despite facing the toughest schedule in recent memory. The national media took notice, making adjustments to their various rankings to accommodate Saturday’s achievement.

Florida’s re-rank after Week 6

Chris Vaninni put together his weekly re-rank for The Athletic after the dust settled from last weekend’s action and moved the Gators up 13 spots to No. 53. Interestingly, this is the same re-rank Florida received from USA TODAY Sports.

That puts the team between the No. 52 Oklahoma State Cowboys and No. 54 Liberty Flames.

The Athletic’s Week 6 Top 10 re-rank

The Texas Longhorns regained the top spot in the re-rank this week, followed by the Ohio State Buckeyes, Alabama Crimson Tide, Georgia Bulldogs and Oregon Ducks, respectively, among the top five.

The Penn State Nittany Lions, Miami Hurricanes, BYU Cougars, Tennessee Volunteers and Clemson Tigers round out the top 10, respectively.

Where did Oklahoma football rank in The Athletic’s survey of top coaching jobs?

Where did the Sooners land in The Athletic’s survey of the top jobs in college football?

The Athletic compiled a survey (subscription required) of 50 people working in college football. From assistants to administrators to recruiting staffers, those polled were asked to rank their top five jobs in college football.

Programs that earned a first-place vote received five points, second place received four votes, and so on. Coming in at No. 1 was Georgia, followed by Texas, Ohio State, Alabama and LSU.

Shockingly, the Oklahoma Sooners came in at No. 19, earning one fifth-place vote. It’s a bit surprising to see them fall so far. In September 2021, coming off their sixth straight Big 12 title, the Sooners were viewed by those polled as the eighth-best job in the country. Here’s what was written in 2021.

Oklahoma’s administration deserves a ton of the credit, too. This is one of those places where alignment isn’t just some buzzword. They’ll give you whatever you need to succeed. It’s slightly surprising to see the Sooners didn’t finish higher in voting. Perhaps it’s due to location or being in the College Football Playoff race every season but not playing for a national title since 2008. Or perhaps their decision to cede their throne in the Big 12 and take on the SEC is already starting to affect perception. – The Athletic

The alignment hasn’t changed. Oklahoma has consistent leadership and commitment to football. The fan base is still one of the best in the sport.

One might argue that the job received even more support when Brent Venables took the reins. There’s been a bigger investment into facilities, organizational structure, the development of the S.O.U.L. Mission, and the move to the SEC, which have all raised Oklahoma’s profile on a national stage. The Sooners still have a really strong brand and recruiting footprint.

Certainly, a 6-7 season in Venables’ first at the helm certainly took some of the shine off of the Sooners. But they bounced back to go 10-3 in 2023. In Year 1 of the SEC, OU is showing promising signs of being a program that can compete but has to improve offensively if it wants to be able to hang week-to-week.

But the University of Oklahoma is still one of the top jobs in college football because of the support from the administration and fan base.

Florida holds steady in The Athletic’s SEC vibe check while on bye

Florida stayed put on the Week 5 SEC vibe check from The Athletic during its first bye week of the 2024 college football season.

Florida didn’t play in Week 5 of the college football season, so the Gators held steady at No. 14 on The Athletic’s weekly SEC vibe check.

“A week off meant watching a certain coach lose unexpectedly, meaning that certain coach might not make the Playoff and thus could be available,” senior writer Seth Emerson wrote. “There is still the matter of the current coach, who faces UCF at home this week, which could be the last time the Gators are favored this season. Probably a good idea to go bank that win.”

The “certain coach” Emerson is referring to is, of course, Lane Kiffin of Ole Miss. Many in Gator Nation want Kiffin to be the next coach in Gainesville, but that assumes Billy Napier’s time is up. A win over UCF might not save Napier’s job outright, but it gets him closer to that preseason projection of four wins.

Emerson is also forgetting about a miserable Florida State team that fell to 1-4 this week against SMU. If Florida isn’t favored to win the season finale against FSU, then it might really be wraps for Napier.

The rest of the SEC vibe check is as expected: Alabama moved into the top spot following an upset over Georgia and Kentucky jumped into the top five after beating Ole Miss.

One interesting note from this week’s vibe check is that both South Carolina and Vanderbilt fell despite being on bye. The Gamecocks only dropped one spot, which typically means another team had a strong week, but Vanderbilt fell four places with Alabama looming on the schedule.

Perhaps the Georgia writer felt Vandy had a chance to upset the Tide before Kalen DeBoer’s group put the hurt on them ‘Dawgs…

Week 5 SEC vibe check rankings

  1. Alabama Crimson Tide (4-0, 1-0)
  2. Texas Longhorns (5-0, 1-0)
  3. Tennessee Volunteers (4-0, 1-0 SEC)
  4. Kentucky Wildcats (3-2, 1-2)
  5. Missouri Tigers (4-0, 1-0)
  6. Texas A&M Aggies (4-1, 2-0)
  7. Georgia Bulldogs (3-1, 1-1)
  8. Oklahoma Sooners (4-1, 1-1)
  9. Arkansas Razorbacks (3-2, 1-1)
  10. South Carolina Gamecocks (3-1, 1-1)
  11. Vanderbilt Commodores (2-2, 0-1)
  12. LSU Tigers (4-1, 1-0)
  13. Ole Miss Rebels (4-1, 0-1)
  14. Florida Gators (2-2, 1-1)
  15. Mississippi State Bulldogs (1-4, 0-2)
  16. Auburn Tigers (2-3, 0-2)

Gators stand steady in The Athletic’s Week 5 college football re-rank

Florida did not play in Week 5 and The Athletic’s re-rank did not change. Fair play.

Florida football had a bye last weekend, giving the Gators a chance to group after the first third of their 2024 schedule was complete. However, there was plenty of other action around the country on the collegiate gridiron that shook things up a bit in the polls and rankings.

The nation’s top 10 saw two upsets in the form of a 41-34 Alabama Crimson Tide win over the Georgia Bulldogs, as well as a 20-17 victory for the Kentucky Wildcats over the Ole Miss Rebels. That sent a shock not only in the national standings but also in the battle for the Southeastern Conference crown.

Florida’s re-rank after Week 4

After the dust settled from the weekend, Chris Vaninni put together his weekly re-rank for The Athletic but did not feel compelled to change the Gators’ position, putting them at No. 66 for the second straight week.

The Athletic’s Week 4 Top 10 re-rank

Alabama takes over the top spot after its signature win, with the erstwhile No. 1 team, the Texas Longhorns, falling to No. 2. Georgia remains in the top five despite the loss at No. 3, while the Tennessee Volunteers and Ohio State Buckeyes wrap up the top five, respectively.

The Oregon Ducks, Penn State Nittany Lions, Miami Hurricanes, Missouri Tigers and Michigan Wolverines round out the top 10, respectively.

Up next for the Gators

Florida hosts the UCF Knights on Saturday, Oct. 5 for a Week 6 tangle between two Sunshine State rivals, with kickoff slated for 7:45 p.m. ET. The game will be broadcast on the SEC Network.

Where did the Eagles land in a ranking of top ten front offices in the NFL

The Athletic ranked 40 executives from the around the league and the Philadelphia Eagles have the 4th best front office in the NFL

The Eagles are one of the gold-standard franchises in the NFL, and a top-notch front office is a significant reason for their consistency year in and year out.

The Athletic polled 40 league insiders, including 35 high-ranking executives and five coaches, to compile the NFL Front Office Rankings. Respondents, who were granted anonymity for their votes and conversations discussing them in exchange for their honesty, were asked to submit their top five front offices, in rank order, based on each franchise’s football operations side. (Respondents were not allowed to vote for their own team.)

The scoring system: First-place votes were worth 10 points, second-place seven, third-place five, fourth-place three and fifth-place one. (One respondent split his fifth-place vote among two teams.)

After the dust settled, Philadelphia landed at No. 1 on the list.

4. Philadelphia Eagles

Total points: 140 (5 first-place votes, appeared on 23 ballots)
Owner: Jeffrey Lurie
General manager: Howie Roseman
Head coach: Nick Sirianni

Voters praised Roseman for his analytical and forward-thinking approach to roster-building, which has helped keep Eagles in the playoff conversation for the majority of his tenure, including a Super Bowl LII victory and another NFC title in 2022.

“Howie is really aggressive,” an executive said. “That really stands out about the way they do things. They go for it. He’s not afraid to take risks on players. I think that’s a really good quality when you get into that role, and he’s quick to move on when something isn’t working. Those are attractive traits in a general manager. They’ve also always had guys in Philly who are good evaluators.”

Among the Eagles’ best attributes: cultivating front-office talent. Chiefs general manager Brett Veach, Jets GM Joe Douglas and Browns GM Andrew Berry all worked for Roseman. Ditto for Bears assistant GM Ian Cunningham. Current Bucs general manager Jason Licht worked alongside Roseman in Philly from 2003-07. Current Eagles assistant general manager Alec Halaby has interviewed for GM jobs elsewhere.

Baltimore ranked first on the list, ahead of Kansas City (2), San Francisco (3), Philadelphia (4), and Detroit (5).

Only two other teams—the Houston Texans and Cleveland Browns—received multiple top-five votes from the panelists. Only one other NFC East team, the Dallas Cowboys, appeared on one ballot and received a first-place vote. Six other teams received a single vote.

Where did the Ravens land in a ranking of top ten front offices in the NFL

The Athletic ranked 40 executives from the around the league and the Baltimore Ravens have the best front office in the NFL

The Ravens are one of the gold-standard franchises in the NFL, and a major reason for their consistency year in and year out is a top-notch front office.

The Athletic polled 40 league insiders, including 35 high-ranking executives and five coaches, to compile the NFL Front Office Rankings. After the dust settled, Baltimore landed at No. 1 on the list.

1. Baltimore Ravens

Total points: 259 (15 first-place votes, appeared on 36 ballots)
Owner: Steve Bisciotti
General manager: Eric DeCosta
Head coach: John Harbaugh

It’s been more than five years since Ozzie Newsome stepped down as Baltimore’s GM. His disciples have kept the Ravens in contention nearly every year since.

DeCosta handled quarterback Lamar Jackson’s complicated contract situation, working past a trade request to execute a five-year, $260 million extension in 2023. Jackson then won his second MVP award last season.

From a talent acquisition standpoint, DeCosta has steered the Ravens toward the trade for linebacker Roquan Smith, has a strong track record in the first (safety Kyle Hamilton, wide receiver Zay Flowers) and middle rounds (defensive tackle Nnamdi Madubuike, tight end Isaiah Likely), landed a priority free agent in running back Derrick Henry and created an environment where a veteran like linebacker Kyle Van Noy can thrive. Of course, those are just a handful of examples.

Baltimore landed ahead of Kansas City (2), San Francisco (3), Philadelphia (4), and Detroit (5).

Florida’s win over Miss. St. moves Gators out of SEC ‘vibe check’ cellar

The bad vibes are improving in Gainesville, but the Florida Gators still find themselves near the bottom of the latest SEC vibe check.

After spending the first three weeks of the season ranked 16th on the Athletic’s weekly SEC vibe check, the Florida Gators have moved up two spots to No. 14 following a 17-point win over the Mississippi State Bulldogs.

It’s a somewhat hollow victory for Florida, though, as MSU has spent most of the season ranked in the bottom three of the conference. With several top-25 left on the schedule, this could be the high point for Florida football.

“This result did not change the fundamentals of the situation,” college football writer Seth Emerson wrote. “It did show, well, that there’s some life in the Gators, that they haven’t packed it in despite the noise about the seemingly inevitable.

“Maybe it says something about Billy Napier, his staff and his players. Or maybe it just says something about the team they beat. Either way, let’s push the vibes up in Gainesville because while change may be inevitable — and change is exciting — the present isn’t one to write off just yet.”

Emerson is still projecting this to be the final season of the Billy Napier era in Gainesville, but at least called the Gators a “competent team” against the likes of Mississippi State and FCS Samford.

It’s hard to see Florida moving any higher than No. 14 on this list with no game scheduled for Week 5. A win over UCF the following week would send the vibes skyrocketing up, but let’s take things one week at a time.

Week 4 SEC vibe check rankings

  1. Tennessee Volunteers (4-0, 1-0 SEC)
  2. Texas Longhorns (4-0, 0-0)
  3. Ole Miss Rebels (4-0, 0-0)
  4. Alabama Crimson Tide (3-0, 0-0)
  5. Georgia Bulldogs (3-0, 1-0)
  6. Missouri Tigers (4-0, 1-0)
  7. Vanderbilt Commodores (2-2, 0-1)
  8. Texas A&M Aggies (3-1, 1-0)
  9. South Carolina Gamecocks (3-1, 1-1)
  10. Kentucky Wildcats (2-2, 0-2)
  11. Arkansas Razorbacks (3-1, 1-0)
  12. LSU Tigers (3-1, 1-0)
  13. Oklahoma Sooners (3-1, 0-1)
  14. Florida Gators (2-2, 1-1)
  15. Mississippi State Bulldogs (1-3, 0-1)
  16. Auburn Tigers (2-2, 0-1)

Up next for the Gators

Florida does not play next week with its first bye of the season scheduled. The UCF Knights will come to Gainesville in Week 6 for a 2021 Gasparilla Bowl rematch. The Gators are looking for revenge after falling to the Knights, 29-17, under interim head coach Greg Knox.

UCF features the best rushing attack in college football through four weeks of play. The Knights average 375.7 yards on the ground and have 13 touchdowns on the ground. Meanwhile, Florida is ranked 107th of the 133 FBS teams in run defense after allowing 188.8 rushing yards per game.

The Athletic remains timid in it’s ranking of Sam Darnold

While Sam Darnold has been good for Minnesota in two games, The Athletic isn’t exactly buying it.

Despite a 2-0 start and a hot start from Sam Darnold, not everyone is buying the Minnesota Vikings through two weeks. And mostly, that starts with former top-five pick Sam Darnold.

Jeff Howe, with The Athletic, updated his quarterback rankings for the past two weeks. While Darnold bumped up in his rankings, he still isn’t highly viewed. He was 23rd last week and has moved up to No. 19 this week.

Howe admits Darnold supporters could gripe about his low ranking, but Howe needs to see more than a two-game sample size from Darnold. He has never lived up to the hype of USC and wants to see if he can continue this play in Minnesota.

“Vikings coach Kevin O’Connell runs a quarterback-friendly offense, and wide receiver Justin Jefferson makes everyone around him better at their jobs — 20.4 percent of Darnold’s passing yards this season occurred on one throw to Jefferson on Sunday, after all. Darnold appears to be set up for success more than at any other point in his career, and it wouldn’t be too difficult to argue Darnold is off to a better start than some of the quarterbacks who have ranked ahead of him.”

So why the low ranking? It’s still too small of a sample for a QB who has shown flashes like this at various points in his career, notably during a solid 3-0 start with the Panthers in 2021 before it all came crashing down.

“If Darnold sustains this pace, he’ll rise up the rankings.”

Through two games, Darnold has completed 72% of his throws for 476 yards. He has also tossed four touchdown passes and two interceptions.
