Bengals make Thaddeus Moss a notable cut while trimming to 53

The Bengals cut a big name, to say the least.

After Joe Burrow publicly lobbied for former LSU teammate Thaddeus Moss to make the Cincinnati Bengals final roster, it almost seemed a foregone conclusion that would be part of the news cycle on Tuesday.

It seemed even more obvious after tight end Mason Schreck was one of the early reported cuts.

Or not.

Moss took to Instagram before the cut-down deadline and posted a story that suggested he didn’t make it. And when the team announced its 20-plus moves to reach 53 by the 4 p.m. ET, he was indeed waived.

While unexpected, the third and perhaps final tight end spot came down to special teams play and the team preferred Mitchell Wilcox. The Bengals will undoubtedly look to add Moss back to the practice squad if he clears waivers.

Joe Burrow lobbies for Thaddeus Moss to make Bengals’ final roster

Bengals tight end Thaddeus Moss made one final push Sunday to make the 53-man roster and QB Joe Burrow gave him a strong endorsement.

With the cutdown to 53 players coming this Tuesday, the Cincinnati Bengals’ leader is making a hard push for a young weapon to make the final roster.

Tight end Thaddeus Moss is coming off a game with five catches for 44 yards in Cincinnati’s 29-26 preseason finale loss to the Miami Dolphins on Sunday as he is fighting for one of the final roster spots on the Bengals. That, after a strong showing in camp and other preseason contests.

On Sunday, he got a strong endorsement from quarterback and former LSU teammate Joe Burrow, as captured by ESPN’s Ben Baby: “I think he’s going to be a big part of this team.”

Burrow also added (H/T Sports Illustrated):

“We were talking about it on the sideline. There are certain plays where we asked Kyle (Shurmur), ‘Hey, why’d you go here?’ And he’s like, ‘I just know where Thaddeus is gonna be. I know exactly what Thaddeus is gonna do and I know he’s going to be open,'” Burrow said. “Thaddeus is a guy that works really, really hard, gets better every single day, is always asking questions about the offense. He’s studying the script, and then he sits next to Brandon (Allen) in the locker room, and he’ll either ask me or Brandon, ‘Hey, on this route or in this coverage, what do you you want me to do?’ And you tell him and he does it. He’s not a guy that you have to tell over and over and over again. And those guys are really valuable. I think he’s gonna be a big part of this team that I’m excited to have.”

The Bengals claimed Moss off waivers from Washington in April and was competing with Mason Schreck and Mitchell Wilcox for the third tight end spot behind CJ Uzomah and Drew Sample.

Thaddeus Moss had play of the day as he seeks to make Bengals’ final roster

Thaddeus Moss is quickly making his case for a spot on the final roster.

Thaddeus Moss is making a big play for the final roster at Cincinnati Bengals training camp.

With the third spot behind C.J. Uzomah and Drew Sample up for grabs, Joe Burrow’s former LSU teammate has started to stand out on the field when given the chance.

Wednesday, Moss shook loose of coverage while working with the second team and snagged a 20-yard gain over the middle from veteran Brandon Allen.

Let’s just say Allen likes what he sees from the second-year pro.

“He had a nice size advantage and he went up to make a play,” Allen said, according to Geoff Hobson of Bengals.com. “He plays bigger than he is like a lot of guys do in the league. He’s definitely one of them. He goes up and makes plays. He’s got a lot of athleticism in him, he’s smart and goes make plays.”

Moss had injuries that initially derailed his path to the draft and he only lasted one year in Washington. But what he’s displaying now while healthy is why the Bengals pounced on him when he hit the waiver wire.

Simply making the roster would be a big first step for Moss, who certainly looks the part. With the way he’s playing and with the way others on the bubble might be struggling (see below), he seems well on his way.

Thaddeus Moss has big goals for Bengals training camp

Moss plots a breakout with the Bengals this summer.

Onlookers haven’t heard much about Thaddeus Moss in the early goings of Cincinnati Bengals training camp.

A big name due to his last name and status as a 2019 LSU teammate of Joe Burrow, Moss was an attention-worthy pickup by the Bengals this offseason.

But so far, Moss hasn’t made a ton of noise in camp at a rather stacked position.

ESPN’s Ben Baby caught up with him after a recent practice and asked about what he wants to prove:

“Just that I can play ball. It’s literally as simple as that. The last two years have been out of my control…going undrafted and stuff, I haven’t had any say in it. I’m finally healthy, I’m finally on the football field…as long as I stay healthy everything is going to take care of itself.”

There’s certainly room for Moss to show what he’s capable of and squeak past a name like Mitchell Wilcox for the final roster. But he’ll likely have to make some noise in preseason contests — while staying healthy — for that to happen.

Call it a good problem for the Bengals to have. Moss is motivated after a quiet year in Washington last season and like Ja’Marr Chase, he’s got prior experience with Burrow.

The Thaddeus Moss and Joe Burrow reunion is here

The gang is getting back together again in Cincinnati.

There’s been plenty of talk of LSU wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase potentially joining the Cincinnati Bengals in the 2021 NFL Draft, but there’s another Tigers reunion already in store.

The Bengals announced on Monday afternoon that they had claimed former LSU tight end Thaddeus Moss off of waivers after he was recently let go by the Washington Football Team.

Moss was an undrafted free agent in 2020 and spent the whole season on injured reserve with a foot injury that was found at the 2020 scouting combine.

Moss has a high ceiling and was impressive at LSU, especially with quarterback Joe Burrow throwing passes to him.

Over the course of 12 games on an undefeated 2019 season that was capped off with a national championship victory, Moss caught 47 passes for 570 yards and four touchdowns.

It will be interesting to see if Moss and Burrow can get that type of magic going again — and if Chase will ultimately join the party on April 29 when the draft officially begins.

Chase has already said that he wouldn’t mind re-joining Burrow, and that from what he has seen of Bengals film, that he believes Cincinnati runs some of LSU’s old stuff.

We can only imagine that they’ll be running a lot more of it with the new addition of Moss and the very possible addition of Chase.

Former Washington tight end lands with Cincinnati

It didn’t take long for former Washington tight end Thaddeus Moss to find a new home.

It didn’t take long for former Washington tight end Thaddeus Moss to find a new home.

On Monday, the Cincinnati Bengals announced they had acquired Moss on waivers from Washington after he was waived late last week.

The 6-foot-2, 249-pound Moss was an undrafted free agent out of LSU who signed with Washington after the draft last year, in part because of the team’s lack of depth at the tight end position. However, he was placed on injured reserve in the summer and never appeared in a game for the Football Team.

Moss, the son of Randy Moss, went undrafted in 2020 after a medical check at the combine revealed a fracture in his foot that required surgery.

In Cincinnati, Moss will reunite with his former college quarterback, Joe Burrow. In his final season at LSU in 2019, Moss caught 47 passes for 570 yards and scored four touchdowns. Moss was also a fearless blocker for the Tigers, who would win the national championship that season.

Moss will have to battle to make Cincinnato’s roster with four tight ends already on the roster.

Bengals claim TE Thaddeus Moss

Moss will be back with his college quarterback in Cincinnati.

After a rookie season in which he didn’t see the field with the Washington Football Team, tight end Thaddeus Moss has been claimed by the Bengals per multiple reports.

Washington released Moss last week.

Moss is the son of former Vikings wide receiver Randy Moss.

The move reunites the younger Moss with quarterback Joe Burrow, who was also his quarterback at LSU. During their season together, Moss finished with  570 receiving yards and four touchdowns.

Moss, 22, was undrafted in 2019.

Joe Burrow and Thaddeus Moss will be reunited on the Cincinnati Bengals.

The Bengals claimed the former Washington tight end Monday, making good on a suggestion we made last week once he was waived.

It’s an addition that makes way too much sense for a Bengals team in need at tight end. Even better, Moss was a friend of Joe Burrow’s and one of the quarterback’s favorite targets during their title run at LSU.

The Bengals had previously put in a call on Moss after the 2020 draft but he oped to go with Washington. One year later, he’s headed to Cincinnati.

This is a very low-risk move for the Bengals, as Moss has a ton of upside if he can get past the injury issues that caused him to fall out of the draft and miss all of his rookie season.

Washington releases five players, including the son of Randy Moss

With the 2021 NFL draft just three weeks away, the Washington Football Team began clearing some room on their offseason by releasing five

With the 2021 NFL draft just three weeks away, the Washington Football Team began clearing some room on their offseason roster by releasing five players on Friday.

One of those released players is tight end Thaddeus Moss. An undrafted free agent out of LSU in 2020, Moss was diagnosed with a broken bone in his foot before the draft. He was released in training camp, but went unclaimed and reverted to Washington’s injured reserve list.

The son of Randy Moss, Thaddeus Moss signed with Washington last offseason due to the team’s lack of depth at the tight end position.

Also released was defensive tackle Caleb Brantley. Brantley had been with Washington since Sept. 2018 but did not see a lot of action. He sat out the 2020 season due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Brantley’s release likely has more to do with Washington’s outstanding depth at the position.

WFT also released running backs Javon Leake and Michael Warren, and wide receiver Emanuel Hall.

Former Bengals target and Joe Burrow teammate Thaddeus Moss waived by Washington

An interesting option for the Cincinnati Bengals might be a free agent again.

Thaddeus Moss and the Cincinnati Bengals can be used in the same sentence again.

According to ESPN’s Field Yates, Washington just waived Moss, an undrafted free agent last year who missed all of his rookie season due to injury.

Moss was a hot topic around here after the 2020 draft because he was a friend of Burrow’s during LSU’s title run, never mind one of his favorite targets on the field.

The Bengals indeed put in a call on Moss before he signed with Washington.

Moss fell out of the draft at least in part due to those injury concerns. But he’s an interesting target the Bengals could add now even before the draft to give them more chances at finding steady contributors in the offense — or quality depth at worst.
