SWAC Tournament: Texas Southern vs. Grambling odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Saturday’s Texas Southern vs. Grambling odds and lines, with college basketball expert picks, predictions and best bets.

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3011″ ]

The Texas Southern Tigers (16-15) and Grambling Tigers (19-14) meet in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Tournament Championship Game Saturday at the Bartow Arena in Birmingham, Ala. Tip-off is scheduled for 9:30 p.m. ET (ESPNU/ESPN+). Below, we analyze FanDuel Sportsbook’s lines around the Texas Southern vs. Grambling odds, and make our expert college basketball picks, predictions and best bets.

The 3rd-seeded Texas Southern Tigers have picked up wins and covers against Jackson State and Alabama A&M to get back to the SWAC title game. The Tigers are trying to back to the Big Dance for the 4th straight season, and 8th time just since 2014.

Texas Southern has won 3 in a row, and 7 of the past 8 games, while covering at a 7-1 against the spread (ATS) clip since Feb. 19.

The 1st-seeded Grambling Tigers posted wins and covers against Alabama State and Bethune-Cookman to get to the final. Grambling is trying to make history, as it is one of 2 SWAC institutions to never have qualified for the NCAA Tournament.

Grambling has won 8 of the past 9 games, with the only setback an overtime loss at Alabama State in the regular-season finale March 9. Grambling is 9-4 ATS in the past 13 games, including a 66-63 win at Texas Southern on Feb. 17 in the most recent meeting.

Texas Southern vs. Grambling picks and predictions

Prediction

Grambling 69, Texas Southern 67

Moneyline

GRAMBLING (+116) is going to make history, punching its ticket to the NCAA Tournament, likely the First Four, for the first time in school history.

These Tigers have been red-hot, winning 8 of the past 9 games, with a lone setback in overtime along the way. It isn’t going to be easy, and it might even come down to the final possession, but Grambling is going dancing.

Against the spread

GRAMBLING +2.5 (-110) is worth playing if you’d like a little bit of insurance. Each of the 2 regular-season meetings have been decided by 3 points or less, so it’s unlikely we’ll get a lopsided score either way.

Grambling has really been playing well, and it won the most recent meeting in Houston. The time is now for Grambling to make history.

Over/Under

OVER 127.5 (-110) is the best play on the board in this SWAC title game.

The Under is 2-0 in the 2 games for Grambling in this tourney, but these Tigers have scored 74 or more points in 3 of the past 6 outings.

For Texas Southern, it has cashed the Over in 4 of the past 5 games, going for 72 or more points in 7 straight outings, while allowing at least 70 points in 4 of the previous 6 contests.

First Four: Fairleigh Dickinson vs. Texas Southern odds, picks and predictions

The Fairleigh Dickinson Knights (19-15) and Texas Southern Tigers (14-20) meet in an NCAA Tournament First Four contest Wednesday. The battle for an East Region No. 16 seed at UD Arena in Dayton will tip off at 6:30 p.m. ET (truTV). Below, we analyze Tipico Sportsbook’s lines around the Fairleigh Dickinson vs. Texas Southern odds, and make our expert college basketball picks, predictions and bets.

Fairleigh Dickinson is in the NCAA Tournament for the 1st time since 2019 by way of winning the Northeast Conference Tournament … sort of. FDU lost the title game to Merrimack, a school transitioning to DI from DII and ineligible to compete in the NCAA tourney. Enter the Knights, who did beat Merrimack twice during a season that saw them log 77.8 points per game.

Texas Southern got to Dayton by way of winning the Southwest Athletic Conference Tournament. The Tigers have been a streaky bunch this season; in their last 9 games they have won 3 in a row, lost 3 in a row and won 3 in a row.

Prediction

Texas Southern 75, Fairleigh Dickinson 69

Streaky Texas Southern is on the upswing. The Tigers are the value side here, but go easy on your sportsbook account and look to the ATS action in this game: PASS.

FDU is 2-10 ATS in its last 12 neutral-site games. The Tigers are 4-1-1 ATS in their last 6 NCAA Tournament games, and coach Johnny Jones owns a 5-2 ATS mark in the Big Dance.

Texas Southern is a more veteran group and one that has played a much tougher schedule. Look for the Tigers’ defense, rate of free-throw attempts and rate of shots from in close to be difference makers in this battle.

TAKE THE TIGERS -1.5 (-115).

SWAC Tournament: Texas Southern vs. Grambling State odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Saturday’s Texas Southern vs. Grambling State odds and lines, with college basketball expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The 8-seed Texas Southern Tigers (13-20) face the 2-seed Grambling State Tigers (24-8) Saturday in the Southwest Athletic Conference (SWAC) Championship Game, with an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament on the line. Tip from Bartwon Arena is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. ET (ESPNU). Below, we analyze Tipico Sportsbook’s lines around the Texas Southern vs. Grambling State odds, and make our expert college basketball picks, predictions and bets.

Texas Southern may be the 8-seed but it has tapped into its postseason experience. It topped 1-seed Alcorn State 66-62 as a 2-point underdog in the 1st round Tuesday and dropped Alabama A&M in the semifinals by a 74-61 count as a 3-point favorite Friday. The Under cashed in both games, helped along by TSU allowing just 61.5 points per game.

Grambling State is back in the SWAC title game for the first time since 2011, and it is looking for its first-ever trip to the NCAA Tournament. The Tigers belted Bethune Cookman 87-72 in the opening round Wednesday and eased by Jackson State 78-69 in a tough matchup Friday. The Tigers have covered 7 straight games and the Over is 2-0 in this tourney.

Grambling won 65-46 against Texas Southern on Feb. 11, easily cashing as a 5.5-point home favorite as the Under (135) cashed. Grambling also picked up an 85-72 victory as a 2.5-point road underdog on Jan. 4 as the Over (131.5) connected.

Texas Southern vs. Grambling State picks and predictions

Prediction

Grambling State 69, Texas Southern 61

Moneyline

Grambling State (-290) will cost you nearly 3 times your potential return. That’s an expensive play for any standalone wager, regardless of if it’s a championship game. It’s a bad long-term strategy to bet such heavy favorites.

PASS.

Stream select live college basketball games and full replays: Get ESPN+

Against the spread

GRAMBLING STATE -6.5 (-110) laying the points is the way to go, although it wouldn’t be surprising to see Texas Southern hang around and put a scare into the Louisiana-based Tigers.

Texas Southern is the defending SWAC Tournament champ and it isn’t likely to go quietly into the night, but it’s Grambling’s time to shine, and finally break through and go dancing for the first time in school history.

Over/Under

UNDER 132.5 (-110) is worth playing lightly, but roll with a half-unit play at most.

It’s all about the Under for Texas Southern, going 4-1 in the past 5 games following a straight-up win and 7-2 in its last 9 after a cover. The Under is 4-1 in the past 5 neutral-site games for TSU, too.

The Under has connected in 7 of Grambling’s last 9 neutral-site games, but be careful as the total has gone high in its first 2 tourney games.

Texas Southern at Kansas odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Monday’s Texas Southern at Kansas odds and lines, with college basketball expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The Texas Southern Tigers (1-6) visit the No. 3 Kansas Jayhawks (6-1) for a Monday non-conference affair in Lawrence. The opening tip at Allen Fieldhouse will be at 8 p.m. ET (Big 12 Network). Below, we analyze Tipico Sportsbook’s lines around the Texas Southern vs. Kansas odds, and make our expert college basketball picks, predictions and bets.

Rankings courtesy of the USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll.

Texas Southern has thus far logged a 1-point win in overtime (Nov. 13 vs. Arizona State) and a half-dozen losses by 13 points or more. The Tigers’ last loss was Nov. 20 to favored (-9.5) Samford 78-63. In that game, TSU shot over 40% (43.4%) for the 1st time this season.

The Jayhawks are coming off their 1st setback of the season, losing to Tennessee 64-50 on Friday as a 2.5-point underdog. KU shot 32.1% from the floor in that loss, marking its lowest percentage in 16 games (since March 5).

Texas Southern at Kansas picks and predictions

Prediction

Kansas 82, Texas Southern 61

Moneyline

Not available, and you probably wouldn’t want to bet it anyway.

Against the spread

A Jayhawks win by a margin of 20-25 points looks like a narrative that easily tumbles into place in most iterations of this contest. A couple comps match up with that assessment, and a PASS is the recommendation.

Over/Under

Both teams play an up-tempo style of basketball. Kansas will likely want to get back to its fast pace after slow back-to-back games against Wisconsin and Tennessee.

Look for a lot of 2-point attempts, a decent number of rebound-put-backs, and some bounce — relative to the competition — in TSU’s shooting numbers.

BACK THE OVER 138.5 (-110).

Texas Southern at Texas Tech odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Thursday’s Texas Southern at Texas Tech odds and lines, with college basketball expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The Texas Southern Tigers (0-1) travel to Lubbock to take on the No. 24 Texas Tech Red Raiders (1-0) Thursday. Tip-off from United Supermarkets Arena is at 8 p.m. (Big 12 Network/ESPN+). Below, we analyze Tipico Sportsbook’s lines around the Texas Southern vs. Texas Tech odds, and make our expert college basketball picks, predictions and bets.

Rankings courtesy of the USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll.

Texas Tech defeated Northwestern State 73-49 Monday in its season opener. Texas Southern is coming off a 90-77 loss at San Francisco Monday.

The Red Raiders look to cement a place in the upper echelon of the Big 12 while also continuing their recent dominance on defense. This will be a low-scoring defensive game and the Red Raiders are not sure to be hospitable hosts in this matchup.

Texas Southern at Texas Tech picks and predictions

Prediction

Texas Tech 72, Texas Southern 48

Moneyline

PASS.

Neither side is worth a play on the ML in this game.

Against the spread

BET TEXAS TECH -18.5 (-110).

Texas Tech won its opener against Northwestern State by 24 points but failed to cover the 28-point spread, but that would be enough to cover this game.

The Red Raiders defense was able to shut down its opponent, allowing just 49 points. The same type of clamp will be put on the Tigers. I do not see Texas Tech getting to 80, but I do not see Texas Southern even getting to 60. So, give me TEXAS TECH -18.5 (-110).

Over/Under

BET UNDER 136.5 (-105).

There are certain teams that you want to blindly bet on the Under. Texas Tech is one of those teams.

The Red Raiders had a total of 141.5 in their opener and it went Under by 19.5 points. The market has not yet caught up to Texas Tech. Until it does, take Unders in its games. Thursday’s UNDER 136.5 (-105) is my FAVORITE PLAY.

March Madness: Texas Southern vs. Kansas odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Thursday’s Texas Southern vs. Kansas odds and lines, with college basketball expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The No. 16 Texas Southern Tigers (19-12) will meet the No. 1 Kansas Jayhawks (28-6) Thursday in the first round of the Midwest Region. Tip from Dickies Arena in Fort Worth is scheduled for 9:57 p.m. ET. Below, we look at the Texas Southern vs. Kansas odds and lines, and make our expert college basketball picks, predictions and bets.

Rankings courtesy of the Ferris Mowers Coaches Poll powered by USA TODAY Sports.

Kansas is coming off a 74-65 win over Texas Tech in the Big 12 Tournament championship, covering as 2.5-point favorites. The Jayhawks have covered 4 straight games, including all 3 Big 12 tournament games.

Kansas is 17-16-1 against the spread (ATS) this season. It is led by G Ochai Agbaji, who averaged 19.7 points per game.

As for Texas Southern, it is already 1-0 in the NCAA Tournament, beating 16-seeded Texas A&M-Corpus Christi by 9 in a First Four game.

The Southwestern Athletic Conference champions are 17-13-1 ATS on the season. Texas Southern is led in scoring by 6-foot-9 F John Walker III, who averages 10.1 points per game.

[tipico]

Texas Southern vs. Kansas odds, lines, picks and predictions

Prediction

Kansas 86, Texas Southern 61.

Money line

PASS.

A -5000 money line in March isn’t a smart play, yet at the same time, Texas Southern has little chance to pull off the upset against an extremely talented Kansas side.

Against the spread

LEAN to KANSAS -22.5 (-107).

With former Arizona State G Remy Martin playing for Kansas, its offensive prowess should get a boost, not like it needed one though. Kansas has the sixth-ranked adjusted offensive efficiency.

Considering Texas Southern’s weakness is offense and its strength is defense, it could be tough for the Tigers to keep pace. It has yet to play an offense as effective as Kansas.

The Jayhawks are 2-1-1 ATS when given at least a 20-point spread. They should be able to overpower the Tigers, but given the size of the spread, it’s certainly just a lean.

Over/Under

LEAN to the OVER 145.5 (-112).

Every time the Jayhawks have been spotted a spread of more than 20, they have covered the Over, scoring 80 or more points in each of those games. It is 19-15 O/U on the season.

Kansas is a conference-best 8-3-2 O/U in non-conference games. While the Tigers are just 14-17 O/U, they will have to keep pace with the Jayhawks to have any chance in this battle.

March Madness: Texas A&M-Corpus Christi vs. Texas Southern odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Tuesday’s Texas A&M-Corpus Christi vs. Texas Southern odds and lines, with college basketball expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders (23-11) meet the Texas Southern Tigers (18-12) Tuesday in a battle for the 16th seed in the Midwest Region of the NCAA Championship Tournament. The contest at UD Arena is slated to tip off at 6:40 p.m. ET. Below, we look at the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi vs. Texas Southern odds and lines, and make our expert college basketball picks, predictions and bets.

Texas A&M-Corpus Christi won an automatic berth in the tourney as champion of the Southland Conference, winning as a No. 4 seed after going 7-7 in league play. Including three wins in the conference tournament, Corpus Christi has gone 7-1 in its last eight games.

The Texas Southern Tigers, champs of the Southwest Athletic Conference,- are in the NCAA Tournament field for a second straight year. In a fast-paced SWAC, the Tigers held foes to a league-best 65.5 points per game. TSU has won seven of its last eight games while allowing a mere 37.2% mark from the field.

Texas A&M-Corpus Christi vs. Texas Southern odds, lines, picks and predictions

Prediction

Texas Southern 70, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 68

Money line

Texas Southern has one of the more veteran rosters in all of NCAA-I hoops, and the Tigers are in the tournament for a second straight year. But this price is workable for profit on the A&M-Corpus Christi side.

The Islanders have not been a great 3-point shooting team this season, but they’ve been dialed in recently. In the last seven games, they’ve connected on 37.9% of their efforts from the distance. Pit that shooting against a TSU five which is perhaps due for some perimeter defense regression.

Turnovers and free throws could well land on the Corpus Christi side of the ledger. BACK THE ISLANDERS (+140).

Against the spread

In looking at non-conference slates for each, a win over Florida stands out for the Tigers, but the depth of performances — often losing margins against better teams — make A&M-Corpus Christi worth the look as a more-than-3-point underdog.

TAKE THE ISLANDERS +3.5 (-112).

Over/Under

The pace and both teams strong offensive rebounding counter the lack of 3s. Add in some point-per-possession growth for the Islanders and the potential for some turnover fueled runs and the OVER 135.5 (-110) becomes a slight lean.

March Madness: Michigan vs. Texas Southern odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Saturday’s Michigan vs. Texas Southern odds and lines, with March Madness Round 1 picks and predictions.

The Michigan Wolverines (20-4) take on the Texas Southern Tigers (17-8) in an East Region First Round game Saturday. The No. 1-seed Wolverines and 16th-seeded Tigers will tip-off at 3 p.m. ET at Mackey Arena in West Lafayette, Ind. Below, we analyze the Michigan-Texas Southern odds and lines, with March Madness NCAA Tournament picks and predictions.

Michigan wants to get back to the basketball it played from Nov. 25-Feb. 27 when a well-rounded Wolverine five went 18-1, outscoring teams by an average margin of 13.6 points. In five games since, UM is just 2-3. Michigan has struggled from the floor and fallen off in its normally strong rebounding over that stretch.

Texas Southern advanced to this game after defeating Mount St. Mary’s 60-52 in a Thursday First Four contest. TSU has won 10 straight games and is playing excellent defense. Over the win streak, the fast-tempo Tigers have held foes to a mere 38.0% mark from the floor.

Michigan vs. Texas Southern: Odds, lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Michigan 86, Texas Southern 60

Money line (ML)

There was no money line available at the time of publishing. Due to the size of the spread, it wouldn’t be worth pursuing, anyway.

Against the spread (ATS)

This is a mismatch without any real hook to hang a play on for either side. The Tigers can’t hang with Michigan from a physical standpoint, and it’s logical to expect a bounce-back game from a Wolverines squad looking to make a run and playing on a familiar floor.

Expecting a near-30-point win in a game with a likable Under is too much of a stretch.

Tag TEXAS SOUTHERN +26 (-110) with the lightest of leans.

Over/Under (O/U)

The Under is 15-9 in Michigan’s 24 games, and UM has tended to force lower scores in the pace clashes in the Big Ten. The Wolverines are without senior F Isaiah Livers (foot), and things swung the other way when Michigan played lesser fast-paced non-conference foes at the start of the season. Against Bowling Green, Oakland, and Ball State, the Over went 3-0.

A couple of UM’s recent losses were in very slow games, and the Maize & Blue may look to leverage their athleticism more in this match-up.

TAKE THE OVER 142.5 (-110).

March Madness: Mount St. Mary’s vs. Texas Southern odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Thursday’s Mount St. Mary’s vs. Texas Southern odds and lines, with March Madness Round 1 picks and predictions.

The Mount St. Mary’s Mountaineers (12-10) take on the Texas Southern Tigers (16-8) in the First Four round of the NCAA Tournament Thursday evening. The Mountaineers and Tigers will tip off at 5:10 p.m. ET at Assembly Hall in Bloomington, Ind. Below, we analyze the Mount St. Mary’s-Texas Southern odds and lines, with March Madness NCAA Tournament picks and predictions.

Mount St. Mary’s advanced to the tournament by winning the Northeast Conference Tournament, and the Mountaineers head into Thursday’s game on a four-game win streak. MSMU sports a solid defense, one that has allowed just 62.3 points per game (17th NCAA-I). The Mountaineers are seeking a program-first NCAA tourney win.

Texas Southern is in the tournament for a fifth time since 2015, but the Tigers are making their first trip under HC Johnny Jones. The champions of the Southwest Athletic Conference play a fast-tempo brand of basketball. The Tigers hit the boards hard on the offensive end, frequently get to the foul line, and average a robust 74.8 points per game.

Mount St. Mary’s vs. Texas Southern: Odds, lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Mount St. Mary’s 70, Texas Southern 65

Money line (ML)

PASS on the flat-footed pick ’em tags. Mount St. Mary’s is a solid play for the outright win, but take the point as an insurance bonus.

Play our new, free daily Pick’em Challenge and win! Play now!

Against the spread (ATS)

This is a tortoise-and-the-hare match-up with MSMU (slow) and Texas Southern (fast) being near the far ends of the tempo continuum. The Tigers come out of a fast-pace SWAC and haven’t had much experience against the slowdown game. The Mountaineers have had games against teams that force a lot of possessions, and they’ve fared well in those games.

Look for Mount St. Mary’s rebounding and distance shooting edges to put the Mountaineers over the top.

BACK MOUNT ST. MARY’S +1 (-110).

Over/Under (O/U)

Both teams tote Over trends into this contest. But this tag looks accurate. Peg a slight lean on the Over (133, -110), but that’s about it.
