Texas football player banned from state high school sports after attacking referee

The football player that attacked a referee after being ejected from a game has been suspended from all future athletic activities in Texas.

Emmanuel Duron, the football player that attacked a referee after being ejected from a game earlier this month, has been suspended from all future athletic activities in Texas.

The Texas University Interscholastic League (UIL) voted unanimously Monday to ban Duron from UIL-sanctioned activities through the remainder of the 2020-21 academic year, according to the Monitor in McAllen. Duron, who was an all-state wrestler as a junior, will not be able to participate in competition this winter.

Edinburg’s athletic programs were also punished for the incident. Edinburg football coach JJ Leija was placed on one year’s probation for the 2021-22 academic year, while all of the school’s athletic programs will be on probation through the 2022-23 academic year.

Duron was arrested and charged with assault after running onto the field and throwing a referee to the ground after he was ejected from Edinburg’s first-round playoff matchup on Dec. 3. Duron was originally whistled for roughing the passer and then flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct for reportedly saying something to the official. He was then escorted back to the sideline before running back onto the field and hitting the referee after his ejection was announced.

“I’d like to say that I’m sorry for what happened to my coaches, my family and to the UIL,” Duron said Monday, per the Monitor.

Edinburg was removed from the playoffs following the incident.

“We as a district understand that it is a very unfortunate incident for the team, as the students and coaching staff worked very hard throughout the year for this season, but it is important that our district abides by the rules and regulations set forth by the UIL,” Edinburg CISD interim superintendent Gilbert Garza said.

“Our district’s leadership agrees with the committee also that such incidents are not acceptable and will not be tolerated. Moving forward, our district is committed to developing and implementing a plan of action to proactively deter any future misconduct by any future student-athlete.”

WATCH: Texas commit Ja’Tavion Sanders makes absurd one-handed touchdown catch

If the 2020 high school football season has taught us anything, it’s this: Texas commit Ja’Tavion Sanders is a walking highlight reel.

If the 2020 high school football season has taught us anything, it’s this: Texas commit Ja’Tavion Sanders is a walking highlight reel.

Sanders took the field for Ryan (Texas) against Frisco Lone Star High School on Friday night and did not disappoint, making a ridiculous 25-yard, one-handed touchdown catch in a 35-21 Ryan win. Sanders finished with six receptions for 80 yards and a score. He also took four carries for 10 yards as Ryan capped a 9-0 regular season.

What makes Sanders’ grab even more impressive is that he is slated to play defensive end at Texas. That’s right, a future college defensive lineman is going up over defensive backs to make one-handed touchdown catches and thrashing opposing secondaries on a weekly basis.

Only in Texas.

Watch: Scary moment in Texas high school football

A horrific scene where a player attacks an official after being thrown out of the game.

I’ll start off with a disclaimer. Do not watch this if you don’t want to see an offensive lineman rush out from the sidelines and attack a referee.

There wasn’t much known about what transpired prior to Emmanuel Duron attacking the official, but regardless of the situation there is no place in football for this. Why the coaches allowed this player to stay on the sidelines after the incident happened bothers me.

At the end of the video he’s barely being told to leave. If I’m the coach, the player would have been long gone. End of career. You’re not welcome back.

An extremely sad and scary situation in Texas high school football.

Texas Football Recruiting: How 2021 prospects performed in Week 14

The early signing period is just two weeks away. UT’s 2021 class has continued to slowly grow. Here is how the prospects played in Week 12.

The early signing period for the 2021 recruiting class is just two weeks away. As things stand, Texas has the No. 17 overall recruiting class and the No. 2 class in the Big 12. It has been a stressful and frustrating cycle.

With the end of the Tom Herman era upon us, it may be getting even worse. If the head coach is fired before recruits have the ability to sign on Dec. 16, they may be looking at other places.

Plenty of 2021 commits has already decided to take their talents elsewhere, even with Herman still in charge. These next two weeks will determine a lot about the future of Texas football.

For the players still in the class, here are how they are wrapping up their final high school seasons:

Watch: Crazy back-and-forth play during Texas high school football game

A wild moment during a Texas District 4-5A Division 1 matchup between Mansfield Summit and Richland.

High school football is always reliable for producing highlight-worthy moments, but what unfolded in the Texas District 4-5A Division 1 matchup between Mansfield Summit and Richland is an all-time gridiron “Say what?!” masterpiece.

Let’s go to the tape:

If you’re scoring at home, that’s a pass attempt from Royals’ Cole Benson to Jay Rhinehart…with the ball bouncing off a defender’s helmet (worn by Ahmaad Moses)… and then, defensive back Sean Smith snagging the ball for an interception.

Smith runs out of the end zone, a full head of steam…but gets stripped near the 15-yard line…it’s a fumble!

The Royals’ Mark Zamora recovers and rumbles toward the end zone, where a defender meets him, and, oh man…another fumble!

But wait! It’s…Rhinehart, who was still near the goal line from the beginning of the chaos. He recovers the ball for…a touchdown!

Phew.

The hommage to Hot Potato would be Richland’s final score of the game. Although it wasn’t enough to overcome the undefeated Jaguars, the moment won the night—2020 high school football’s wildest moment?—even gaining notice on SportsCenter

To cap it all off, the Richland Royals had a little fun with it too, adding a classic zinger to a now-classic 19 seconds.

Top 2022 quarterback recruit Quinn Ewers decommits from Texas

Quinn Ewers, the No. 1 quarterback in the class of 2022, decommitted from Texas on Wednesday.

Quinn Ewers, the No. 1 quarterback recruit in the class of 2022 according to 247Sports, has decided to reopen his recruitment and decommit from Texas.

Ewers originally committed to Texas on Aug. 14, making him the program’s highest-rated quarterback commit since Vince Young in 2002. Two months later, Ewers is back on the market, taking to Twitter on Wednesday night to back off his pledge to the Longhorns.

“Recently, as I’ve competed alongside my teammates during my junior season at Southlake Carroll, I’ve also taken some time to think about my future,” Ewers said. “Given the COVID-19 pandemic facing us, this has been a challenging year for students like myself, with the support of my family, I tried to navigate the recruiting process the best way I could. With the process being abnormal this season, I tried my best to keep an open mind to all possibilities.

“However, the more I’ve considered the more I’ve come to realize I didn’t explore all options as thoroughly as I would have liked. Therefore, I’ve decided to de-commit and reassess the situation before making such an important decision on my future.”

Ewers’ decommitment comes in wake of Texas’ struggles to begin 2020. The Longhorns are off to a 2-2 start, dropping consecutive contests to TCU and Oklahoma before bouncing back with a win over Baylor last weekend. Texas’ tumultuous start has landed Tom Herman on the hot seat, and losing Ewers pushes him even closer to the brink.

Ohio State is perceived to be the favorite to land Ewers now that he is back on the open market, as his 247Sports Crystal Ball currently reads 100% in favor of the Buckeyes.

“Good height with a plus frame. Pro-style QB with athleticism and mobility that qualify for a dual-threat label. Elite improvisational QB who can extend plays and remain accurate on the move,” 247Sports’ Gabe Brooks said in his scouting report of Ewers. “Throws with a smooth, easy delivery and varies arm angles as needed. Impressive velocity and spin rate really show on routes over the middle and down the seams. Field-stretching vertical arm strength to consistently hit big plays over the top. Also shows encouraging touch on timing patterns and downfield routes that require it.

“Good runner by design or scramble. Understands how to protect himself as a runner and minimize shots. Shows encouraging pocket presence and awareness. Senses pressure and knows how to react to it. Also willing to stand and deliver under duress and will take a big shot if it means hanging in there to make the necessary throw. Occasionally will take risks, but that also is part of what makes him so good. Release quickness is good in general but could still quicken a bit at times. Elite QB prospect at the top of the 2022 cycle, at his position and across the board.”

Positive COVID-19 test results force No. 20 Allen to cancel game against Cedar Hill

Allen High School, ranked 20th in the USA Today Super 25, has canceled its game against Cedar Hill because of positive COVID-19 test results.

Allen High School (Texas), ranked No. 20 in USA Today’s Super 25, has canceled its Friday night matchup with Cedar Hill because of positive COVID-19 results in its program.

According to Greg Riddle of the Dallas Morning News, two student-athletes from Allen tested positive for COVID-19 in the last two days, prompting the cancelation. As of now, the rest of Allen’s games will be played as originally scheduled. Allen is set to host Tyler Legacy next week.

With Allen and Cedar Hill’s postponement 23 games in the Dallas-Fort Worth area this week have been canceled or postponed, most for COVID-19 reasons.

Allen is the largest high school in Texas with an enrollment of 6,959 students, per the UIL’s realignment in February. Per Allen Independent School District policy, any student with a lab-confirmed positive COVID-19 test is required to remain off campus and follow CDC guidelines before returning to school. District officials have started contact tracing to determine if any students were in close contact with the students who tested positive for COVID-19.

Allen and Cedar Hill have combined to win eight state championships in football. According to Dave Campbell’s Texas Football, Allen, who is fresh off a statement victory over Atascocita last week, is ranked fifth in the state in Class 6A. Cedar Hill (1-0) is No. 12.

Watch: 2021 Texas commits Jonathan Brooks and J.D. Coffey shine on Friday night

If there is one thing bigger than CFB in the state of Texas, it is high school football. Two 2021 Texas recruits shined early in the season.

If there is one thing bigger than college football in the state of Texas, it is high school football. Friday night lights are back and a couple of 2021 Longhorn recruits shined early in the season.

Beginning with Jonathan Brooks, the running back had another big day for the Hallettsville Brahmas. Brooks exploded for five touchdowns on Friday. Four scores came via the ground, while Brooks was also able to secure a 66-yard receiving touchdown.

Most importantly, the Brahmas got their second victory of the season, beating Ganado 49-7. Now with a 2-1 record, Hallettsville has been riding the back for Brooks. The running back had three touchdowns in the Brahmas’ season opener against Shiner.

A three-star prospect, Brooks has been committed to Texas since May. As things stand, he is the Longhorns only running back in the 2021 recruiting class.

247Sports reporter Nick Harris was on the scene for Brooks’ spectacular night. You can watch the highlights here:

Moving to the defensive side, four-star safety J.D. Coffey and Kennedale High School opened up its season with a victory against Sunnyvale. Playing safety and returning punts, Coffey was dealing with leg cramps all night according to Mike Roach.

However, Coffey still found a way to make an impact.
