Texas A&M head softball coach Trisha Ford previews LSU series

Texas A&M head softball coach Trisha Ford previews the LSU series

No. 11 Texas A&M (28-4, 8-1 SEC) will face off against No. 6 LSU in a three-game series in Baton Rouge on March 28 at 6 p.m.

Head coach Trisha Ford has the Aggies off to one of their best starts in program history and they will have another chance to show how much they have improved over last year. This is probably the series of the weekend to watch and could move A&M into the Top 10 if they can take the series over the Tigers. Coach Ford and her team are ready for the challenge and the Tigers and the atmosphere will bring.

“I’ve heard that their fans are rambunctious, let’s say, and on the on the field, but that’s all good for us like all of that is you can either look at it as like oh this is going to be hard or you can look at this as a great opportunity for us to go into an environment that’s um, pretty Rowdy and make it quiet.”

Texas A&M players Wiggins and Wooley preview LSU series

Texas A&M infielders Koko Wooley & Rylen Wiggins preview the LSU series

No. 11 Texas A&M (28-4, 8-1 SEC) will play No. 6 LSU in a three-game series in Baton Rouge on March 28 at 6 p.m.

Aggie softball has remained hot all season long, winning games in several ways with an extremely deep team. A few of the things of note this season are how well they have played at all levels of the defense and their clutch hitting with two outs.

“…this year everybody steps into the box, the whole team knows that they have you on their back like we’re supporting everyone, even our pinch hitters I mean, shout out Kylie Griffin hit the farthest home run I’ve seen in a while and she’s not an everyday starter that just shows how much depth we are as a team…” -Wiggins

“I’m just trusting myself, really they make practice really hard every day, so like I everything I need to work on we work on in practice, so they make it hard, so I feel like that’s helped me become more confident in myself. I have more tools in my box so makes me more comfortable.”

Texas A&M softball is sitting right outside of the Top 10 in the Week 7 rankings

Texas A&M Softball has been on fire!

Another SEC series win leads to a small jump in the polls. This past weekend, Texas A&M (28-4, 8-1 SEC) swept the No. 25 (at the time) Auburn Tigers at Davis Diamond. Like most of their games, they did it in several ways with the small game and big bats. They even erased an early five-run deficit to run-rule the Tigers in game three to win 14-6.

Following their third SEC series win, all major softball polls have moved the Aggies just outside the Top 10.

Texas A&M softball jumps a few spots across the polls after 5-1 start in SEC play

Texas A&M continues to shoot up the rankings after another SEC series victory over a Top 25 team.

The Texas A&M softball team (25-3, 5-1 SEC) is proving to be a complete team after a few questions about the competition before entering SEC play. You can throw that out of the window as the Aggies have gone 5-1, defeating No. 23 South Carolina and No. 20 Mississippi State (USA TODAY/NFCA Coaches) over the last two weeks.

They outscored their SEC opponents 29-13 and hit six home runs across those six games. Even with her rough outing in game three against Mississippi State, Emiley Kennedy has shown herself to be one of the better pitchers in the country. While it is still early in the season, A&M looks like a team that can enter the Top 10 if they can keep up this pace.

All major softball polls have moved the Aggies into the Top 15 following back-to-back SEC series wins over Top 25 teams.

‘Sundays are hard’: Trisha Ford explains 1-run loss vs. No. 21 Mississippi St. to snap 8-game win streak

“That’s what I talked to the team about,” she said. “Sundays are hard, Sundays we have to figure out how to come out here and grind it out.”

The Texas A&M softball team had its eight-game winning streak snapped on Sunday afternoon with a narrow loss against Mississippi State.

The No. 21 Bulldogs (21-6, 3-3 SEC) avoided the sweep with a 6-5 victory, giving the No. 17 Aggies (25-3, 5-1) their first conference loss of the season. Texas A&M coach Trisha Ford spoke to the media postgame.

“I thought we just didn’t do a great job of executing our gameplan,” Ford explained. “We had a couple of opportunities there. The zone was pretty tight for both teams and we didn’t do a good job of executing and kind of using that to our advantage. That’s just how it goes, they had more fight in us. That’s what I talked to the team about.

‘Sundays are hard, Sundays we have to figure out how to come out here and grind it out.'”

The Aggies had the tying run at third base in the top of the seventh inning but were unable to get the runner home.

“We were in the right part of the lineup for us to do some damage,” Ford recalled. “We just ran out of time.”

Game Recap: Softball – No. 2 Texas A&M vs No. 1 Texas (NCAA Tournament Regional Final)

Texas A&M’s softball season officially came to an end Sunday afternoon with a 11-5 loss to Texas in the NCAA Tournament Regional Final.

After playing four games over three days, the Maroon and White magic eventually ran out as No. 2 Texas A&M fell to No. 1 Texas 11-5 in the NCAA Tournament Austin Regional Final. A&M softball’s first season under coach Trisha Ford ends with a 35-21 record (12-12 SEC).

Over the last few days, the Aggies have been playing stellar defense, with the pitching also top-notch. However, the trouble has been on offense, as A&M had yet to score more than two runs except for Saturday night’s victory over Texas State.

Unfortunately, on Sunday, the Aggies did manage to put multiple runs on the board, but the Longhorns were too much offensively.

Texas finished batting 10-of-30 with eight walks and one hit by a pitch while striking out three times all afternoon. Courtney Day had a day to remember, producing four runs in two separate innings while hitting a two-run double in the first and a three-run double in the fifth.

A&M starting pitcher Shaylee Ackerman surrendered four runs, while Madison Preston provided relief and gave up one hit and two walks in 0.2 innings. Emiley Kennedy took the mound for the remainder of the game, but the damage was pretty much done, as she allowed Texas to score seven runs (three unearned) on seven hits.

The Maroon and White went 7-for-28 as a team with four walks, one homer, and one hit by a pitch while striking out six times. Koko Wooley (2-for-4) and Rylen Wiggins (2-for-4) finished with multiple hits. Riley Valentine launched a three-run homer in the fifth to cut the deficit 10-5, while Trinity Cannon hit an RBI groundout in the first to score Wooley.

While the loss stings, and at the expense of the Longhorns moving on no less, a 35-21 record under a new coach and new staff in year one is a feat to be proud of.

Final Score: Aggies 5, Longhorns 11 – W: Morgan, Mac; L: Ackerman, Shaylee

Game Recap: Softball – No. 2 Texas A&M vs No. 3 Texas State (NCAA Tournament Regional)

After a tough loss earlier in the day, Texas A&M softball rebounded with a 4-2 win over Texas State, punching their ticket to the regional final and a rematch versus Texas.

In light of a tough loss to the Longhorns earlier in the day, No. 2 Texas A&M quickly bounced back to punch their ticket to the NCAA Tournament Regional Final thanks to a 4-2 win over No. 3 Texas State.

Saturday evening’s battle featured a rematch of 24 hours before, with the outcome proving much the same as the Aggies sent the Bobcats packing for the second time in two nights. After the bats weren’t in their favor earlier in the day, the Maroon and White got on the board early with two quick runs at the top of the fourth inning.

Morgan Smith doubled a ball to allow Julia Cottrill to score for Texas A&M’s first run of the matchup. Not long after, Aiyana Coleman hit an RBI single to give the Maroon and White a quick 2-0 lead.

From that point forward, the Aggies would cease to surrender the lead to Texas State.

Trinity Cannon effectively ended the Bobcats’ hopes with a single to allow Star Ferguson and Koko Wooley to score, giving Texas A&M a commanding 4-0 lead in the fifth inning. And yet, the Bobcats would go down swinging, literally, as Anna Jones’ two-run double allowed Sara Vanderford and Hannah Earls to add two runs on the board, cutting the deficit 4-2.

From that point forward, Emiley Kennedy would shut down the Bobcats’ bats and help the Aggies punch their ticket to the regional final.

Final Score: Aggies 4, Bobcats 2 – W: Leavitt, Emily; L: McCann, Tori

Next up is a rematch with their in-state rival, Texas, on Sunday at 1 p.m. CT in the regional final, which airs on ESPN2.

Game Recap: Softball – No. 2 Texas A&M vs No. 1 Texas (NCAA Tournament Austin Regional)

Despite some strong pitching and good defense, the bats weren’t in Texas A&M’s favor as the softball team fell to Texas 2-1 in Saturday’s NCAA Tournament regional.

After a thrilling walk-off finish propelled No. 2 Texas A&M (34-19, 12-12) over Texas State on Friday night, the Maroon and White were unable to repeat the magic as they fell 2-1 to No. 1 Texas (43-13, 11-7) on Saturday.

With runners on first and second, Amari Harper got things started with an RBI single to center field at the top of the third inning. Then, on their last out, the Maroon and White got on the board first, with Aiyana Coleman running it in.

It wouldn’t take long for the Longhorns to respond, as Bella Dayton walked up to bat with runners on first and third at the bottom of the third inning. After reaching on a fielder’s choice, Alyssa Popelka and Ashton Maloney both scored to put Texas up 2-1.

Despite some good defense and pitching from the Aggies from there on out, the Maroon and White struggled to score runs in response. With the bats not going their way, Texas A&M sought to generate offense through their base running, but Harper was caught stealing in the sixth inning after being walked to first.

From that point forward, the Aggies could not score as the Longhorns held on for a 2-1 win. Hindsight is unquestionably 20/20, but the base running may have cost Texas A&M dearly down the stretch of the last two innings.

Additionally, with a runner on third and one out in the fifth inning, having a pinch runner on deck could have tied the score 2-2.

There’s little time to dwell on the past, as the Aggies will be back in action later tonight. Texas A&M will face the Seton Hall and Texas State winner at 8 p.m. CT. on the SEC Network.

Final Score: Aggies 1, Longhorns 2 – W: Gutierrez, Citaly; L: Preston, Madison

Game Recap: Softball – No. 2 Texas A&M vs No. 3 Texas State (NCAA Tournament, Austin Regional)

Mayhem indeed! In their Austin Regional matchup of the NCAA Softball Tournament, Texas A&M defeated Texas State 2-1 on a walk-off finish in extra innings.

Mayhem indeed! After a thrilling finish, Friday night proved to be a nail-biter through and through, with the No. 2 Texas A&M Aggies (33-19, 12-12 SEC) officially moving on in the NCAA Softball tournament with a 2-1 win over No. 3 Texas State (34-23, 13-9 Sun Belt) in the Austin Regional.

After Hannah Earls scored to make it 1-0 for the Bobcats at the top of the sixth, the Maroon and White responded with a Koko Wooley single to center field in the bottom of the seventh. Following an error by the defense, Allie Enright ran it in to tie the game 1-1 on their final out.

Seven innings proved insufficient for these two teams, as the Austin Regional went to extra innings Friday night.

With extra softball to play, Aiyana Coleman officially put the Bobcats’ season to bed while extending the Aggies’ postseason campaign for another day, with Ry Wiggins on third and their last out, Coleman’s single allowed Wiggins to score and officially cap a walk-off win for the Maroon and White.

With tonight’s win, the Aggies will face No. 13 Texas on Saturday, May 20, at 2 p.m. CT. Big congrats, ladies! Gig’Em, and beat Texas tomorrow!
