Houston Texans preseason roster cuts tracker

The Houston Texans have a cut deadline after each of their three preseason games. Follow along with the cuts here.

Every week has a cut day in the NFL’s new three-game preseason.

For the Houston Texans, they have to get at 85 men on their roster on Aug. 17 by 3:00 p.m. Central Time.

On Aug. 24, the Texans will have to go to 80 by 3:00 p.m. Central Time.

The big day is Aug. 31 as the Texans will have to get at 53 men by 3:00 p.m. Central Time.

“The goal for training camp is for everybody to establish a level of performance,” general manager Nick Caserio told reporters on July 28. “We’re not going to predetermine everything. Nobody has a defined role. We’re going to go out there and let the players take care of themselves, and that will sort itself out.”

Here is a list of all of the cuts throughout preseason.

What is an acceptable level to judge David Culley in the Texans’ first preseason game?

Houston Texans coach David Culley will see his first NFL action as the boss on the sidelines. What is the proper way to evaluate his efforts?

David Culley is finally going to get his shot.

Albeit the shot will come during the Houston Texans’ preseason opener against the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field, but it will nevertheless be the first time that Culley can show the world what an NFL team plays like under his command.

To this point, Culley has been the happy, consistent face of a rebuilding franchise. Even though he isn’t working with Deshaun Watson, J.J. Watt, or even DeAndre Hopkins, luxuries that Bill O’Brien had to work with since 2017 with just one playoff win to show, Culley is constantly enthused to come to work.

For Houston sports fans who feel yet again toyed with by the Texans, Culley has been too lovable to despise. In fact, he is easy to root for.

The whole façade gets tested in Green Bay.

Every pre-snap penalty or special teams goof will be on display for Texans fans who maybe haven’t dug deep into the reports coming out of training camp at Houston Methodist Training Center. When Tyrod Taylor drops back and gets sacked on the opening drive, it will be a preview of what Houston fans may have to get used to for 17 regular season games.

According to general manager Nick Caserio, the team is looking at keeping as many good players around as possible, no matter their spot on the depth chart.

“You have to figure out what makes sense,” Caserio told Sports Radio 610 [KILT-AM] on July 28. “Do we cut this guy and try to put him on the practice squad? Okay, we’re not sure we can get him there. Those are some of the things that will go into the psychology as we get a little bit closer. But you’re really looking at that group in totality because at any point those players could be active on Sunday, at least that’s how we’re approaching it.”

How the Texans play in the first quarter when a majority of the starters and role players are in the game will tell the tale. If they have negative plays, can’t move the ball, sustain penalties, have communication issues, that will be problematic for the season. If such issues occur later in the game with players who will be on practice squads this fall, that isn’t necessarily a coaching issue, no matter who is on the sidelines.

Which preseason game is the Texans’ dress rehearsal for the regular season?

The NFL has provided for three preseason games in 2021. Which one is now the regular season dress rehearsal for the Houston Texans?

The third game being the regular season dress rehearsal in a four-game preseason made sense. Coaches could look at their starters into the third quarter, if necessary, and then put bubblewrap back on them until September. The fourth game was used to evaluate the bottom of the roster and make the hard decisions to get at 53 men for the final roster.

Since the NFL did away with the fourth preseason game and moved it to the end of the 16-game season to create the new 17-game season, which game has become the new dress rehearsal for the Houston Texans?

Coach David Culley provided some insight as to which game might be the dress rehearsal when he met with reporters before practice at Houston Methodist Training Center.

“This week will basically be the last week we feel like we’ll be in training camp mode,” Culley said. “Next week we start into — because next week is going to be the same as this week going into Dallas. We’ll approach it as if it is a game week and we’ll use the last week of preseason the same way as we are in — in a regular game. So it gives us a chance to do that.”

The way the Texans look at it “dress rehearsal prep” is as important as the game itself. According to Culley, it appears the Texans will have two weeks of rehearsals to get their regular season preparation correct.

However, the Texans will stay in “training camp mode” ahead of the bout with the Green Bay Packers on Saturday night.

Said Culley: “Green Bay hasn’t played a game. It’s their first game, it’s our first game, and we’re going to go up there and play each other and take it from there.”

The Texans start the regular season at home against the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sept. 12.

What do the Texans hope to see out of first preseason game with the Packers?

The Houston Texans have their first preseason game with the Green Bay Packers on Aug. 14. What do they hope to get out of the exhibition contest?

The Houston Texans take on the Green Bay Packers Aug. 14 at Lambeau Field for the two teams’ first preseason action since 2019.

What do the Texans hope to gain out of their first preseason game with the Packers? It isn’t as though the outcome of the game matters, and given how early it is in the preseason, there may not be much action for the first team.

According to coach David Culley, who will make his coaching debut, the staff will look at how the team responds to more organic situations, not contrived scenarios from practice.

“I want to see how they perform in the game-type situations,” Culley said. “We haven’t been in that yet. Our scrimmage was actually a manufactured kind of scrimmage. This right here, I mean, it’s live. It will be the first time other than the goal line that we’ve done where it’s going to be live.”

The first preseason game will also give the staff a chance to work on their game day communication and logistics.

“The thing that’s going to happen in this first preseason game, it’s going to be the first time as a staff we’re going to be able to do the game day thing about how we handle things, what happens from the press box, the communication,” said Culley. “And those kind of things will be the first time this group has all been together to do that.”

Regardless of what happens on the scoreboard, the Texans are hopeful they can have a smooth process on the field, on the sidelines, and in the press box at Lambeau Field Saturday night.

3 ways Texans coach David Culley says preseason will help the rookies

Houston Texans coach David Culley knows no preseason hurt rookies in 2020. Here are three ways having a preseason slate will help the new class.

Houston Texans coach David Culley has one aspect of his career he can share with the 2021 NFL draft class and undrafted free agents: he is a rookie, too.

The 65-year-old coach takes over as the man on the sidelines for the first time in his career. In his last stop with the Baltimore Ravens, where he was the receivers coach and passing game coordinator from 2019-20, Culley got to see the effects of what not having a preseason did to the development of the rookies.

In 2021, the NFL will provide a preseason schedule of three games. Culley joined Texans Radio play-by-play Marc Vandermeer and sideline reporter John Harris to talk about how preseason games are critical to the development of the rookies.

“As a rookie, I found out last year, no preseason games, the rookies that I thought was ready weren’t quite as ready simply because the speed of the game just hit them like that,” said Culley. “I saw some rookies that were a little more hesitant than you expected because of not having those preseason games, and that’s why right now having the three preseason games, that is invaluable for new players, especially rookies, to get out on the field.”

Here are three areas where the preseason games will help the rookies, according to Culley.

Texans finalize 2021 preseason schedule

The Houston Texans have finalized their 2021 NFL preseason schedule.

The Houston Texans have finalized their preseason schedule for the 2021 exhibition campaign.

The Texans will open up preseason with a trip to Lambeau Field to take on the Green Bay Packers on Saturday, Aug. 14 at 7:00 p.m. Central Time.

Houston stays on the road once more as they travel to AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, to face the Dallas Cowboys at 7:00 p.m. Central Time on Saturday, Aug. 21.

The only preseason game at NRG Stadium for 2021 is on Saturday, Aug. 28 at 7:00 p.m. Central Time when the Texans host the Super Bowl champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

2021 will be the first time the Texans will have just three preseason games. From 2002-19, Houston would have two road preseason games and two home preseason games. In 2021, with the move to 17 games, that extra home preseason game has been converted to a home regular season game, giving the Texans nine games at home and eight on the road when the games are for real.
