DE Dylan Horton to step away from Texans due to personal health matter

Houston Texans rookie defensive end Dylan Horton is stepping away from the team due to a personal health matter.

The Houston Texans will be without one of their rookie defensive ends indefinitely.

Fourth-round defensive end Dylan Horton released a statement through the team Wednesday that he will be away from the team indefinitely.

“I’m currently dealing with a personal health matter that will keep me away from the team for an indefinite period of time,” Dylan said. “I want to thank my family, my teammates and the entire Houston Texans organization for the support and care they have already provided me. I will provide updates from time to time, but my main focus right now is on my health and recovery. Thank you and God bless.”

Dylan had collected 13 combined tackles, one tackle for loss, two quarterback hits, and a fumble recovery through 10 games.

Texans pick Washington DE Bralen Trice in CBS Sports 2024 mock draft

The Houston Texans take a first-round defensive end in the latest CBS Sports mock draft.

Even though the Houston Texans are finally finished rebuilding, draft season never goes away, especially in the age of salary cap football. Teams are constantly involved in talent acquisition.

According to Josh Edwards from CBS Sports, the Texans use their projected No. 24 overall pick in Round 1 of the 2024 NFL draft to take Washington defensive end Bralen Trice.

DeMeco Ryans is not going to settle for one or two pass rushers. He wants an Army. Bralen Trice paired with Jonathan Greenard and Will Anderson Jr. is a solid foundation.

The thought that the Texans include Trice as part of a triumvirate with Greenard and Anderson is interesting as it presumes the Texans work out a deal to keep Greenard around. The former 2020 third-rounder is currently in the final year of his rookie deal, and no doubt his performance on-field is his best negotiating power. If the Texans believe Greenard is too pricey, they may take Trice nonetheless.

The Washington edge rusher has 28 combined tackles, 5.0 tackles for loss, 3.0 sacks, and a fumble recovery through 10 games for the Huskies, who face Oregon State on Nov. 18.

Texans go first-round edge again in CBS Sports mock draft

The Houston Texans take Florida State DE Jared Verse in the latest CBS Sports 2024 mock draft.

The Houston Texans don’t have glaring roster needs — at least not compared to last year when they were 1-6-1 following Week 9. Entering the 2024 offseason will have Houston putting the finishing touches on a roster that should be competitive by that ensuing autumn.

According to Chris Trapasso from CBS Sports, the Texans use their first-round pick in his latest mock draft to take Florida State defensive end Jared Verse.

Verse is too good for the Texans to pass on here. Fun edge-rushing duo with him and Will Anderson Jr. for the long-term future.

Selecting Verse would be an interesting choice at No. 22 overall. What the selection would signal is the Texans allowed defensive end Jonathan Greenard to get away in free agency. However, the club may not be sold on the progress of fourth-round defensive end Dylan Horton and undrafted free agent Ali Gaye.

Going with a defensive end at that point in the offseason also indicates the Texans shored up the linebackers and secondary in free agency. Other picks on the board include Penn State cornerback Kalen King, Clemson linebacker Barrett Carter, and Miami safety Kamren Kinchens.

Greenard has blossomed in his contract season. The former 2020 third-rounder has generated 6.0 sacks, eight tackles for loss, and 10 quarterback hits for the Texans through seven starts. Houston would have to weigh allowing certain production that Greenard provides against the unsure proposition a rookie could bring.

Texans activate DT Hassan Ridgeway from injured reserve

The Houston Texans have added to their defensive line depth with the activation of Hassan Ridgeway from injured reserve.

The Houston Texans have added to their defensive line depth with the activation of one of DeMeco Ryans’ former San Francisco 49ers.

The Texans announced they have activated defensive tackle Hassan Ridgeway from injured reserve.

Ridgeway played 15 defensive snaps and two special teams snaps in the Week 1 loss to the Baltimore Ravens. Before going on injured reserve, Ridgeway amassed two combined tackles.

Houston also declared their lone practice squad elevation for Week 8 against the Carolina Panthers. Cornerback D’Angelo Ross will be on the active roster Sunday at 12:00 p.m. Central Time at Bank of America Stadium.

The Texans also released linebacker Cory Littleton, who the club signed back earlier in the week.

Texans should consider UCLA DE Gabriel Murphy in 2024 NFL draft

If the Houston Texans want to let Jonathan Greenard walk, UCLA DE Gabriel Murphy could be a younger option in the 2024 NFL draft.

The Houston Texans will have to make a decision with Jonathan Greenard. Either the Texans re-sign their former 2020 third-rounder at the end of the season, or they let Greenard test free agency. Given the defensive end is leading the team with 3.5 sacks, Greenard may be able to score a contract that Houston finds too pricey.

In the event Greenard gets away from the Texans, the organization has to be prepared, and UCLA defensive end Gabriel Murphy has to be a part of that contingency.

According to Trevor Sikkema from Pro Football Focus, the Bruin edge defender benefits from playing opposite Laiatu Latu, but Murphy’s complementary work is nonetheless noteworthy if a team is looking to collect pass rushers.

2023 is the second season of great pass-rush production from Murphy. The 6-foot-3, 255-pounder is used on both sides of the field — and sometimes even as an interior rusher — and it has yielded success. His 18.6% pass-rush win rate in 2022 has been bested by his 22.4% clip so far this season.

Murphy’s hand work is so good, often disengaging with blockers before they can even reach him and making sure they can’t get ahold of him as he attacks the outside or inside shoulders. Despite his 91.2 pass-rush grade this season, he isn’t getting the love his production warrants.

The Texans’ defense begins with the front. Having Murphy would allow the Texans to get younger at the position and also keep a veteran contract off their salary cap.

Through seven games, Murphy has generated 18 combined tackles, 9.5 tackles for loss, 4.5 sacks, and a pass breakup.

DeMeco Ryans ‘excited’ to add Myjai Sanders to the Texans

Houston Texans coach DeMeco Ryans is intrigued by the possibilities Myjai Sanders brings to the defense.

DeMeco Ryans had seen enough from Myjai Sanders.

The former Arizona Cardinals 2022 third-round defensive end played 39 snaps over the course of two games against the San Francisco 49ers last season. The 6-5, 248-pound edge defender generated five combined tackles and a tackle for loss against their NFC West rivals, where Ryans was finishing out his stint as defensive coordinator.

Arizona placed Sanders on injured reserve to start the 2023 campaign, and eventually released the 25-year-old on Oct. 17. The Texans claimed Sanders the next off waivers.

“He was a young pass rusher we wanted to add,” Ryans said. “Feel like giving him another chance here to see what he can bring to our unit.”

Sanders also has familiarity with Texans defensive coordinator Matt Burke, who was the defensive line coach for the Cardinals last season. The Texans not only have staff who know Sanders, but can also project how he can fit in with Houston’s objectives.

Said Ryans: “His first day was out there was today, so we’ll see throughout the week how Myjai gets adjusted to what we do, but I really liked Myjai coming out of college, and liked what he’s done last year in Arizona. I thought he was effective in getting after the quarterback, so I’m excited to add him to our team.”

Sanders produced 23 combined tackles, 3.0 sacks, three tackles for loss, five quarterback hits, three pass breakups, a forced fumble, and a fumble recovery through 13 games last year, four of which he started.

Texans coach DeMeco Ryans would like to increase sacks

Houston Texans coach DeMeco Ryans would like to see the defensive line generate more sacks.

The Houston Texans were able to sack New Orleans Saints quarterback Derek Carr twice in the 20-13 win Oct. 15 at NRG Stadium, but DeMeco Ryans would like to see more.

Ryans met with reporters Monday and stressed the defensive line is still capable of much more than its nine sacks, which are tied for the second-fewest in the league.

“We have to execute better,” Ryans said. “When it comes to the defensive line, we have to talk about four guys rushing as one. We just have to continue to rush together and make sure our plan is — make sure we’re executing our plan and doing exactly the things we practiced — doing that on game day.”

The lack of sacks is not just a problem with finishing either. Houston is tied for the 11th-fewest quarterback hits in the league with 31, suggesting the Texans’ pass rush isn’t getting near opposing passers nearly enough.

Nevertheless Ryans believes reinforcing the details of the scheme will produce results.

Said Ryans: “It’s just about guys doing the little things and being on it. Rushing together and not feeling like they’re out there by themselves and nobody pressing to try and make a play.”

The Texans have Week 7 off. As Houston enjoys a 3-3 record, the focus coming out of the bye will be to activate a formidable element to the defense.

“Everybody is just doing what they are supposed to do, playing together and the sacks will come,” said Ryans.

Texans DE Will Anderson cracks Pro Football Focus top-15 rookie grades through Week 4

Houston Texans defensive end Will Anderson has shown his prowess through Week 4 according to Pro Football Focus’ rookie grades.

One would expect the rookie with nary an interception through his first 151 pass attempts to be among the top-15 rookies through Week 4, but beggars can’t be choosers.

At least the Houston Texans’ twin first-rounder gambit paid off in the form of defensive end Will Anderson, who has been a welcomed burst of disruption off the edge amid the team’s 2-2 start.

According to Mason Cameron from Pro Football Focus, Anderson ranks No. 13 among highest graded rookies through the first four weeks. The Alabama product has tallied a 76.7 grade using the analytics firm’s methods.

While Anderson may not be racking up the sacks, he has been making his presence felt on the edge, producing a 21% pass-rush win rate in three of his four games. A single poor showing may hold down his overall win rate, but he still ranks in the top 25 among all pass-rushers in that metric.

Anderson has generated 15 combined tackles, one tackle for loss, five quarterback hits, 1.0 sack, and a blocked field goal. The Texans have found utility for Anderson on defense with 169 such snaps and also on special teams where needed with 20.

One of the better examples of how Anderson has had an impact is across the defensive line. Fourth-year defensive end Jonathan Greenard has produced a team-high 3.0 sacks, a new personal best through the first four weeks to start a season.

Miami Dolphins running back De’von Achane topped the list with a 93.5 grade.

Texans DE Will Anderson says J.J. Watt ‘has been a good mentor’

Houston Texans defensive end Will Anderson says Ring of Honor member J.J. Watt has been beneficial to his early development.

While Will Anderson may come from a storied college football program in Alabama that has its own vast alumni network, the defensive end chooses to acknowledge the Houston Texans’ history.

The most dominant defensive end since 2011 was J.J. Watt, garnering three NFL Defensive Player of the Year honors in his 128 career games with the Texans through the 2020 campaign. It didn’t take long for Anderson to make the connection that the former face of the franchise needed to be among his counsel.

“J.J. has been a good mentor for me so far,” Anderson told reporters following Houston’s 30-6 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers Oct. 1. “I’m going to start sending him some more clips so I can get some more help. ”

Anderson finished with two combined tackles as the Texans limited the Steelers to 225 yards total offense and 12 first downs.

Nevertheless as the pursuit for greatness continues, so should constant communication with a possible first ballot Hall-of-Famer.

Said Anderson: “He’s been good. Honestly, it’s a privilege and a blessing to have someone like J.J. to communicate with and help out. What he has done in the league, what he has done for the Houston Texans is unbelievable.”

When Watt addressed the Texans ahead of their Week 4 matchup with the Steelers, Anderson identified with one particular aspect of the message.

“‘Don’t take anything for granted. You’re here in the NFL,'” Anderson recalled. “Not a lot of people can say that, and I think that resonated with a lot of the guys.”

Anderson has collected 15 combined tackles, 1.0 sack, a tackle for loss, five quarterback hits, and a blocked field goal in his four games with Houston.

Fatherhood adds extra motivation for Texans DE Jonathan Greenard

Houston Texans defensive end Jonathan Greenard has extra motivation now that he is a new dad.

Sept. 24, 2023, will always hold a special place in Houston Texans defensive end Jonathan Greenard’s heart.

Not because he helped the Texans get their first victory of the season against the Jacksonville Jaguars, which was an accomplishment within itself with all of the injuries the team sustained going into the game, but because it was the day he and his bride-to-be, Altagracia Marte welcomed into the world a beautiful baby girl named Rayna Greenard.

“Baby girl [Rayna] got here, and I could not help it,” Greenard said about the tears that flowed down his face continuously when he held his daughter for the first time. “Just to see my fiancée still doing well after everything and my baby girl healthy, that was everything, and I lost it as soon as I seen her and she seen me, and we locked eyes; it was just one of those experiences you can’t explain.”

“I have an extra chip on my shoulder, obviously, knowing that I am playing for somebody who looks up to you, and you can do no wrong in their eyes. It just adds that much more fun to the game and more motivation as well.”

Before he took the field on Sunday, Greenard got a call as the team was headed to stretch from his fiancée that her water had broken and that she was headed to the hospital. Yet, he did not switch up his pregame routine and played the game with the same intensity he brings to the field weekly.

“She told me to just go play the game, and everything will be fine back in Houston,” said Greenard. “As a matter of fact, she watched the game from the hospital bed. She said she felt as if she was sending positive vibes my way, letting me know everything was going to be okay.”

With the confidence of knowing that everything was being taken care of medically back in Houston for the arrival of his daughter, the fourth-year defensive end took that mini-pregame speech and used it as motivation to intimidate Jacksonville’s offense all game. The things that Greenard does on the defensive side of the ball don’t always show up on the stat sheet, but his intangibles make defensive coordinator Matt Burke smile when he watches the film.

“‘J.G.’ [Jonathan Greenard] has been great,” Burke said at his weekly press conference. “Asking him to do those things: be disruptive, attack, get off the ball. He’s a real cerebral player, so he really wants to know the ‘why’s’ and know the ins and outs, and I think that helps him perform on Sunday, so he’s a real studious guy that I think takes it from the meeting room to the practice field to the games, and that intent and purposefulness has been showing up.”

Greenard’s presence helped the Texans maintain their 24-10 lead in the third quarter of Sunday’s game. With Jacksonville looking to gain more second-half momentum, they faced third and seven from their own 38. Quarterback Trevor Lawrence dropped back, searching for a wide receiver he could complete a pass to so that they could keep the drive going. While in the pocket, he felt pressure from Greenard, who started the play from the linebacker position. He came behind rookie defensive end Will Anderson and was quickly in Lawrence’s face, causing him to throw an interception to linebacker Blake Cashman.

“He is a very smart player,” said Anderson about Greenard. “He is very instinctive. I tell him all the time, ‘There are a lot of things that you can do that I would never think of in a million years to do.’ He is a fantastic guy. I watch him work every day; he is crafty, he wants it, he is hungry for it. Just being in the room with him he keeps everyone on edge. When you have a guy in the room that demands excellence and keeps a high standard of himself and everybody else makes the room great.”

Even with all the accolades the former First-Team All-SEC player out of Florida receives, it still will never be enough to put himself before the team.

“When you make plays, it is like you are supposed to do that,” Greenard said exclusively to the Texans Wire about his non-selfish attitude. “Of course, we hold ourselves to a different standard. I just want to win. None of that [Individual stats] matters if we are making stats and we still ain’t showing up. I am just going to keep grinding and helping my teams get more wins moving forward.”
