Bears to activate LG Teven Jenkins from IR, will play vs. Commanders

The Bears are getting back LG Teven Jenkins in time for tonight’s game against the Commanders.

The Chicago Bears finally got a good piece of injury news just in time for Thursday night’s matchup against the Washington Commanders.

According to NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo, the Bears are activating left guard Teven Jenkins off injured reserve. He’s expected to play in tonight’s game against the Commanders.

Jenkins landed on IR at the start of the regular season with a calf injury that kept him sidelined for the first four games. After being designated to return from IR, he was a full participant in practice this week.

Jenkins was arguably Chicago’s best offensive lineman from last season, and his return will be a big boost for quarterback Justin Fields and the offensive line.

With Jenkins returning, that means Cody Whitehair is expected to move back to center. We’ll see if Jenkins plays exclusively at left guard tonight or if he’ll perhaps split reps with Lucas Patrick, who served as center for the first four games.

In a corresponding move, Chicago is releasing quarterback Nathan Peterman from the active roster. Peterman was recently passed up by rookie Tyson Bagent for the backup role. The expectation is for Peterman to return on the practice squad.

5 biggest storylines ahead of Bears vs. Commanders in Week 5

The Bears are looking to snap a 14-game losing streak against the Commanders tonight. Here’s a look at the biggest storylines.

The Bears take on the Commanders in a primetime Thursday night football Week 5 contest, and Chicago has a lot more than just a win or loss riding on this game. The team is on the precipice of a 15-game losing streak, and head coach Matt Eberflus may see his time as the Bears head coach come to an end if he doesn’t break that streak. All is not lost, however: Quarterback Justin Fields is coming off a red-hot four TD performance against the Broncos last week, and the offense as a whole took a major step up.

Though it’s not for the reasons Bears fans had hoped, this season has become very interesting. Let’s examine some of that interest as we break down the five biggest storylines ahead of Bears vs. Commanders in Week 5.

5 bold predictions for Bears vs. Commanders

From Teven Jenkins rotating at guard, to Darnell Mooney’s revenge, here are our bold predictions for Bears vs. Commanders.

The first prime-time matchup of the year for the Chicago Bears (0-4) is upon us as the team prepares to take on the Washington Commanders (2-2) on Thursday Night Football. Both teams are coming off crushing losses, as the Bears blew a 21-point lead to the Denver Broncos to lose 31-28.

The Commanders, meanwhile, lost a thrilling overtime game to their division rival Philadelphia Eagles, falling 34-31. It’s a get-right opportunity for one of these teams to get back in the win column and regroup after a mini-bye week.

Thursday Night Football is a unique brand, one that can feature sloppy play or incredible moments. Sometimes they’re one in the same, too. Here are our bold predictions for the opening game of Week 5.

Looking more likely Bears LG Teven Jenkins will suit up vs. Commanders

Matt Eberflus said Bears LG Teven Jenkins healed “really well” and “fast” from calf injury.

The Chicago Bears will be without some key starters in the secondary for Thursday night’s game against the Washington Commanders. But they might be getting back a key member of the offensive line in left guard Teven Jenkins.

Jenkins was designated to return from injured reserve this week, giving him a 21-day window to return. He missed the first four games of the 2023 season.

Head coach Matt Eberflus told reporters Wednesday that Jenkins healed “really well” and “fast” from his calf injury. And it’s sounding more and more likely that Jenkins will suit up against Washington.

“We’ll see where he is tomorrow,” Eberflus said. “Obviously, when he’s in that situation, you’re gonna work him out. We’ll see where he is and then we’ll go from there.”

The Bears have until 3 p.m. CT on Thursday to activate Jenkins from injured reserve if they want him to play against the Commanders.

Bears LG Teven Jenkins has legitimate chance to play vs. Commanders

The Bears are close to getting starting LG Teven Jenkins back.

The Chicago Bears will battle the Washington Commanders on Thursday Night Football, and it sounds like they could be getting back a key contributor on the offensive line.

Left guard Teven Jenkins was designated to return from injured reserve this week, opening a three-week window for him to return after battling a calf injury.

Offensive coordinator Luke Getsy was asked if Jenkins has a legitimate chance to play Thursday against the Commanders, and he assumes there is a real chance Jenkins is ready to go.

Getsy added they’ll continue to evaluate Jenkins as the next two days progress.

“We got some good work in through camp with him on the left side,” Getsy said. “We’re excited to see him go. We’ll see how far he can go. … We’ll see how the next day or two goes and then we’ll just take it from there.”

It’s certainly an encouraging sign that Jenkins has been a full participant during practice on Monday and Tuesday.

When Jenkins does indeed return, the Bears will get back their best offensive lineman from last season. It’ll be a huge boost along the interior, and the assumption is Cody Whitehair would move back to center with Jenkins at left guard.

A Bears timeline of everything that’s gone wrong in the 2023 season (so far)

Breaking down all the mayhem of the Bears’ nightmare season to this point.

Over the last three decades, the Chicago Bears have been one of the NFL’s worst teams. They’ve won a total of four playoff games since 1994 and have just nine winning seasons in that same time span. Based on the sheer pandemonium the latest iteration has already faced, the 2023 Bears are somehow shaping up to enjoy the worst year of them all.

Below, you will find a timeline of everything that’s gone wrong for the Bears during this extremely young season. We haven’t even seen three games, and it feels like this franchise is about to be swallowed up by a massive sinkhole. Nothing is going right. Everything is broken. None of it is normal. And it doesn’t seem like anyone in a leadership position has solutions to right the ship.

Take a (very) deep breath, and let’s dive in.

Bears designate G Teven Jenkins to return to practice this week

There’s finally some good news out of Halas Hall as Teven Jenkins is coming back to practice this week.

It’s been a bad few weeks for the Chicago Bears for a number of reasons, but there was finally some good news to come out of Halas Hall on Monday. According to Bears head coach Matt Eberflus, the team has designated guard Teven Jenkins to return to practice this week.

Jenkins has been out for the last month and a half due to a lower leg injury suffered during training camp. He went on injured reserve and missed the first four games, but now he is ready to come back and give the line reinforcements after a rough start to the season. Jenkins is set to play a new position for the third time in three years, having moved over to left guard this offseason following the signing of veteran guard Nate Davis. Previously, he played right guard in 2022 and left tackle in 2021.

The Bears have a short week, with a game against the Washington Commanders coming up on Thursday, so it’s unclear if Jenkins will be activated off injured reserve to play in the game. There is a 21-day window to to put him back on the active roster. If and when that happens, he’ll slot in as the left guard and likely push Cody Whitehair back to center, with Lucas Patrick heading to the bench. Both players have struggled at various points this season, making Jenkins’ return that much more impactful.

Bears sign QB Nathan Peterman, WR Trent Taylor to active roster

The Bears signed Nathan Peterman and Trent Taylor to the active roster while placing Teven Jenkins and Doug Kramer on IR.

It’s been a busy week for the Chicago Bears, whose roster has already changed a few times since Tuesday’s roster cut deadline. That includes a few roster moves that just became official.

The Bears signed quarterback Nathan Peterman and wide receiver Trent Taylor to the active roster. They also placed left guard Teven Jenkins and center Doug Kramer on injured reserve.

Both Jenkins and Kramer will miss the first four games of the season and are eligible to return in Week 5, when Chicago faces the Washington Commanders on Thursday Night Football.

Peterman’s signing was something general manager Ryan Poles alluded to during his Wednesday press conference with assistant GM Ian Cunningham. Peterman will serve as a veteran presence in a quarterback room featuring third-year starter Justin Fields and undrafted rookie Tyson Bagent.

Poles stopped short of naming Bagent the backup quarterback, as they sorted out the QB room. And with Peterman now on the active roster, there will be questions about who will serve as Fields’ backup in the Week 1 opener against the Green Bay Packers.

Taylor, who was recently cut from the Bengals, was brought in to serve as the punt returner. Poles clarified as much during his press conference. With Taylor serving as the punt returner, Velus Jones Jr. will be the kickoff returner.

The Chicago Bear are placing left guard Teven Jenkins on injured reserve, general manager Ryan Poles announced during his Wednesday press conference.

Jenkins will miss at least the first four games of the 2023 NFL season, and he’s eligible to return in Week 5, when the Bears face the Washington Commanders on Thursday Night Football.

Jenkins is considered “week-to-week” with what has been reported as a leg injury. According to Adam Schefter, Jenkins has a calf strain in both legs.

Last week, head coach Matt Eberflus revealed Jenkins reported discomfort after joint practices with the Indianapolis Colts.

With Jenkins sidelined, the expectation is Cody Whitehair will play left guard with Lucas Patrick plugging in at center. But new addition Dan Feeney could also factor into the equation.

Poles did say there were “no major injuries” that are considered long-term, which should be encouraging on the Jenkins front.

Bears Twitter reacts to the release of OL Alex Leatherwood

Bears fans were somewhat surprised to see the team move on from Alex Leatherwood.

Another Chicago Bear is hitting the market ahead of Tuesday’s roster cutdown deadline. The Bears announced they are waiving offensive lineman Alex Leatherwood. NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport was first with the news. Leatherwood was drafted with the No. 17 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft by the Las Vegas Raiders as the team’s future right tackle. He struggled mightily throughout his rookie season, and a poor 2022 preseason led to his release from the Raiders.

The Bears put in a claim for Leatherwood, hoping to get something out of the former Alabama standout, but he missed the first half of the season due to mononucleosis. He saw action in just four games near the end of the season, with mixed results. Leatherwood spent much of the 2023 offseason at guard and had moments during the preseason, but not enough to guarantee a spot on the 53-man roster. Leatherwood, who carries a $4.5 million dead cap hit, will now look for his third team in as many seasons. The news came on the heels of the Bears releasing backup quarterback P.J. Walker.

Given the Bears have question marks on the offensive line with Teven Jenkins out for multiple weeks and Nate Davis missing much of camp, seeing Leatherwood cut has Bears fans somewhat surprised. Here is how Bears Twitter reacted to the move.
