Stock up, stock down: Which LSU players impressed, struggled in win over South Carolina

Here’s a look at the stock report on LSU after its 52-24 win over South Carolina on Saturday.

The LSU Tigers defeated the South Carolina Gamecocks 52-24 on Saturday in Baton Rouge to improve to 2-2.

It was a nice bounceback performance after a disappointing defeat at Missouri two weeks ago.

Offensively, the Tigers continue to roll. LSU amassed 541 total offensive yards, including an impressive 276 on the ground. The Tigers’ running game has been inconsistent this season, so Saturday’s performance was a welcome sight for offensive coordinator Steve Ensminger.

Defensively, Bo Pelini’s unit has struggled in two of LSU’s three games before South Carolina. While the defense wasn’t perfect in the win over the Gamecocks, it appears the week off helped the previously struggling unit.

With quarterback Myles Brennan out with an injury, this was a big win for the Tigers. The win allows the Tigers to stay in the SEC race, even with two losses.

NFLSU: Updated mock draft for LSU draft-eligible players

CBS Sports released its updated 2021 NFL mock draft on Tuesday, and two LSU players are listed as first-round selections.

The LSU Tigers may be 2-2 on the season through four games, but the team has playmakers all over the field who will eventually go on to make an impact at the next level.

On Tuesday, CBS Sports released their updated mock draft for the 2021 NFL draft, and two Tigers players are listed in the first round.

Former Tigers receiver Ja’Marr Chase and current wideout Terrace Marshall Jr. are the two players expected to go in the first round.

Ja’Marr Chase

CBS Sports has Chase being selected fourth overall by the New York Giants.

The Tigers receiver opted out of the 2020 college football season to begin preparations for the 2021 NFL draft.

Chase is a talented wideout who could give New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones a new go-to target in the passing game.

The 2019 Biletnikoff Award winner, Chase finished his LSU career with 107 career receptions for 2,093 yards and 23 touchdowns. He averaged 19.6 yards per catch in his two seasons as a member of the LSU football team.

Terrace Marshall Jr.

Marshall is currently the top target on the LSU offense, and has put up 512 yards on 27 receptions for nine touchdowns in 2020.

He has become a talented wideout that shadowed Chase and Justin Jefferson last season, but still made a significant impact.

CBS has Marshall Jr. being selected 27th overall to the Green Bay Packers. The Packers could use an extra weapon in the passing game, and Marshall Jr. would fit their scheme well.

Marshall still has the remainder of the season to play at LSU, with the chance to increase his draft stock even higher with at least six games remaining.

Just this week, he was listed as a potential first-round selection.

‘He’s a cool customer’: True freshman QB TJ Finley impresses in LSU’s debut

True freshman quarterback TJ Finley didn’t flinch as he led LSU to a 52-24 home victory over South Carolina in the place of Myles Brennan.

LSU true freshman quarterback TJ Finley had tears in his eyes.

We’re not referencing any happy ones he may have had after Tigers’ second win of the season when they took the down the visiting South Carolina Gamecocks, 52-24, but about the ones the signal-caller shed before he took over for starting quarterback Myles Brennan, who is out indefinitely with a significant lower-body injury.

“I’m going to be honest with you,” Finley’s father, David Finley, told me ahead of Saturday’s game. “He had tears in his eyes. TJ is a team player. You don’t want to see one of your teammates sit out or sustain an injury where they don’t know if they’re going to come back from it or how they’re going to come back from it. He didn’t really want it like that.”

But at the same time, Finley’s father stressed a “next man up” mentality that he’s taught him since the days when he also played basketball.

“He’s part of the team, though, and they’ve got a game,” he said. “A guy twists an ankle? I need the next guy in to do something comparable to the starter.”

David Finley said the team spent a lot of time praying not only for a strong performance out of the young quarterback, but for his health. Finley’s father said that everyone, including Brennan and Finley, are only ever really “one hit away” from severe injury or being sidelined for a period of time.

[lawrence-related id=12084]

“We pray to God to allow him to perform at his best ability,” he said. “Whoever God sees fit will win the game, and there are people praying on the other side, but you’ve got to pray about you specifically and your abilities.”

It’s a part of the family’s foundation.

“That’s what we train him with and that’s what we stand on,” he said.

Finley was not without some true freshman mistakes on the victory, but LSU couldn’t have asked for much more from Finley, who looked completely composed in an offense he was only commanding for the first time of his career as the starter.

You can take the fact that punter Zach Von Rosenberg never had to see the field as proof.

“T.J.’s a cool customer,” David Finley said. “He’s relaxed. He’s been doing this as his life, so he’s pretty comfortable. He was ready.”

[lawrence-related id=12060]

Finley put his first passing touchdown of the day up with roughly 12 minutes remaining in the second quarter, sending a seven-yard strike to wide receiver Terrace Marshall Jr. in the corner of the end zone.

Finley was without an incompletion on that drive, completing all seven of his attempts for 69 yards.

It wasn’t perfect, though, as hardy any true freshman’s debut ever is.

Finley committed his first interception of the evening with a deep pass intended for Jaray Jenkins on what looked to be a miscommunication. The interception was returned for 56 yards, with Finley making the tackle.

All was forgiven though, as head coach Ed Orgeron didn’t bring fellow freshman quarterback Max Johnson to the field after the mistake.

Finley wasted no time making up for the blunder, though, sending a 51-yard touchdown pass to Marshall on the following drive.

[lawrence-related id=12051]

By the time Johnson took the reins of the offense with 7:39 remaining in the fourth quarter, Finley had completed 17-of-21 passes for 265 yards, responsible for three of the team’s touchdowns.

Finley’s coaches and teammates echoed his father’s thoughts on how collected the quarterback is, given his age, after the game.

“TJ was very calm before and during the game,” sophomore running back John Emery told reporters, “so it was easy to be on his side with everything.”

There’s no hard and fast timetable on when Brennan will be back from injury, but LSU should have no shortage of confidence in putting Finley out on the field after this one.

Finley isn’t basking in the glory of the win or looking for praise, but has his eyes fixed on Auburn instead, if he’s called up again.

“This is a big win for LSU and for this team,” Finley said. “If Myles isn’t ready to play next week, I’ll be ready.”

[lawrence-related id=12024]

Even after Finley’s strong performance, in which head coach Ed Orgeron commended him for the way he handled himself, his stellar arm strength and decision-making, there is no quarterback controversy in Baton Rouge.

“There might be on ya’ll’s part,” Orgeron said. “Everybody’s just yearning for it I can feel it.”

But if there’s one key takeaway for Orgeron from the show Finley put on that had the crowd chanting his name by the end of it, it’s that LSU can be confident in its depth at quarterback.

“If Myles isn’t doing well, I can put in TJ and feel good about it.”

Report Card: Grading LSU’s win against South Carolina

Now, the grades are in with the postgame report card, and some Tigers are getting high marks for their contributions.

LSU evened its record, 2-2, getting back to the win column for the first time since its 41-7 win over Vanderbilt earlier this month, with a 52-24 victory over South Carolina on Saturday night.

Now, the grades are in with the postgame report card, and some Tigers are getting high marks for their contributions.

Quarterback: A-

T.J. Finley gained the start in place of the injured Myles Brennan, and he was quite impressive. Finley completed 17-of-21 pass attempts for 265 yards and two touchdowns. He threw one interception but never seemed rattled in his first career start. Finley added to the team’s rushing total with 24 yards and a rushing touchdown.

All in all, this was a fine first start for the freshman, who had the student section chanting his name at one point.

LSU head coach Ed Orgeron said after the game not to expect any change at quarterback to be made. While Finley’s performance was encouraging, Orgeron made it clear the job is still Brennan’s when he is available.

Postgame Buzz: How Twitter reacted to LSU’s 52-24 win over South Carolina

Here’s a look at how everyone reacted after LSU’s big victory over South Carolina.

LSU celebrated a fun 52-24 win over South Carolina on Saturday night in Death Valley, which led to plenty of fun moments and tweets.

One of the best things about Twitter is how schools continue to let fans in on the postgame festivities, like showing off what the winning locker room felt like after taking care of the Gamecocks.

With Myles Brennan out of action, TJ Finley was set to get the starting nod for the Tigers. Prior to the game, Finley had a chat with Brennan’s father. Later, the LSU student section began chanting Finley’s name.

It was easy to see why…

It was probably a wise decision to get in sync with Terrace Marshall Jr.

Among the highlights in the game was Trey Palmer returning a kickoff 95 yards to the house in the third quarter. It had been a long time coming for the LSU kickoff return unit to celebrate this feeling in front of a home crowd.

How much of a statement game would Florida have been for LSU?

Looking into what the Florida matchup presented for LSU.

It’s been far more defensive woes than offensive ones for the LSU Tigers three games into the season,

LSU recorded 479 yards of total offense against Mizzou, and 498 yards of total offense against Vanderbilt — and it looked balanced. It looked much difference than the split of 345 passing yards and 80 rushing yards that made up the 425 yards of total offense LSU tallied against Mississippi State in the opener.

But it’s also worth noting the Tigers haven’t faced staunch competition in their last two games, recording their first win of the season against a lowly Vanderbilt whose defense seemed to grow wearier by the quarter.

The Missouri defense currently ranks No. 53 in the nation with with an average of 438.3 yards allowed per game, while Vanderbilt ranks No. 58 in the country, giving up an average of 451.7 yards per game.

[lawrence-related id=11795]

If there’s one particular player just about everyone has kept an eye on this year for the Tigers, it’s redshirt junior quarterback Myles Brennan.

For some, it’s easy to be high on him. For others, cautious optimism seems more reasonable.

Brennan has the numbers. We’re talking 1,112 passing yards for 11 touchdowns with three interceptions through three games. 767 of those passing yards and eight of those touchdown passes happened against Mizzou and Vanderbilt.

Brennan has helped LSU put up no less than 40 points in every game he’s played in, and has a respectable quarterback rating of 63.3.

[lawrence-related id=11782]

Wide receiver Terrace Marshall Jr. has been a key piece of the offense, reeling in 21 receptions for seven touchdowns so far this year with a long of 75 yards.

13 of those receptions and five of those touchdowns have come over the past two contests.

We know Florida to be an SEC power, one that has particularly given LSU problems and has seemed poised for a great amount of success early on this season.

It looks like a matchup in which LSU could have made a bold statement by getting the win on the surface, considering the Tigers are last in the SEC West and Florida sits at No. 2 in the SEC East and No. 10 in the country.

But the Gators’ defense actually is more lowly than Mizzou and Vanderbilt this year on paper, giving up an average of 495 yards per game, putting them at No. 72 overall in the FBS defense rankings.

[lawrence-related id=11778]

In total offense, Florida comes in at No. 18 compared to the rest of the nation, with an average of 464 yards per game, directly behind No. 17 LSU, which averages 467.3 yards per contest.

Funny enough, LSU ranks just above Florida in total defense with an average of 494.7 yards on defense to make the Tigers No. 71 in the country.

It will be interesting to see how this matchup, which is tentatively rescheduled for Dec. 12, plays out down the line.

LSU is set to take on the South Carolina Gamecocks next at 3 p.m. CT on Oct. 24 in Tiger Stadium.

Studs and duds from LSU’s 45-41 loss to Missouri

The No. 17 LSU Tigers dropped their second game of the season on Saturday as they lost 45-41 at Missouri.

The No. 17 LSU Tigers lost, 45-41 at Missouri on Saturday in a way that no one could have expected.

The Tigers allowed 586 total yards of offense to Missouri, including 406 passing yards for Connor Bazelak.

With a 1-2 record, LSU now has to make adjustments before their big matchup next week at Florida.

Here are the studs and duds from the Tigers’ crushing loss on Saturday.

Stud: Myles Brennan

Brennan completed 29-of-48 passes for 430 yards and four touchdowns. Saturday marked his first game of the season without throwing an interception.

The Tigers’ junior quarterback looked efficient in the pocket, but failed to convert a pass on fourth and goal that would have won the game for LSU.
