Charlotte City Council approves Panthers’ renovation plan for Bank of America Stadium

Renovation plans for Bank of America Stadium moved forward on Monday night.

The home of the Carolina Panthers (and Charlotte FC) is set for a facelift.

On Monday night, the Charlotte City Council approved plans on a long-term agreement with Tepper Sports & Entertainment to update Bank of America Stadium. The members voted seven to three in favor of the proposal,  appropriating a fixed investment of $650 million towards stadium renovations and a new field house.

Among those in attendance for the meeting included Panthers team president Kristi Coleman, Charlotte FC team president Joe LaBue, Tepper Sports & Entertainment chief venues officer Caroline Wright and Panthers all-time leading rusher Jonathan Stewart—who spoke in support of the project.

The proposal, which was officially released three weeks ago today, noted the following about the plans:

Imagine entering the stadium through an inviting perimeter with a park-like setting and exterior video boards for watch parties and other viewing opportunities. Once inside, fans will experience the best in technology with a new state-of-the-art sound system, scoreboard, and video boards. They can enjoy exciting, unique social areas with skyline views, improved concessions with regional offerings, and an expanded Team Store to better accommodate Panthers and Charlotte FC fans. Arts and culture elements will be infused throughout the design to reflect the vibrant culture across the Carolinas.

  • Brand-new seats installed throughout the bowl.
  • Improved accessibility throughout the facility, designed and constructed in a way that allows individuals with a range of disabilities to have access without barriers.
  • Stadium safety and security enhancements, including illuminated wayfinding and improved lighting.
  • A reimagined South Lawn Pavilion area that can be used as a community gathering spot and outdoor classroom on game days and non-event days.
  • Upgraded restrooms throughout the stadium for better sustainability, accessibility and speed of service.
  • Enhancements to the stadium exterior to reaffirm its place as an iconic, beloved fixture of the Charlotte skyline.
  • A reduction of our impact on the environment and demand on city infrastructure through the modernization of the building systems, including mechanical, plumbing, electrical and HVAC.

Work on the stadium is expected to begin in 2026.

Panthers, Charlotte could have discussions about new stadium by 2037

The city of Charlotte may be eyeing a new stadium for the Carolina Panthers in 2046.

The proposed renovations for Bank of America Stadium may only be a temporary fix for the Carolina Panthers.

As reported by WSOC-TV’s Joe Bruno earlier this afternoon, the city of Charlotte could be eyeing a brand-new home for the Panthers and soccer club Charlotte FC. A provision in the Charlotte City Council meeting’s agenda on Monday, when the group is expected to vote on the Bank of America Stadium renovation project, proposes that the city could start talks towards a new stadium with Tepper Sports & Entertainment by April 1, 2037.

But hold those horses. This facility is not set in stone.

Here, per Joe Person of The Athletic, is a comment on the provision from a city spokesman:

This language does not establish that there will be a new stadium in 2046 but an acknowledgement that Bank of America stadium will be 50 years old at the end of the current proposed agreement and that the two parties will need to address that. It is also a protective measure for the city that establishes the soonest the two parties would begin those discussions and creates a forecast and timeline for future city staff and ownership. A similar provision has been included in agreements with the Hornets related to the Spectrum Center renovations and is a common stipulation in stadium/arena agreements.

In short—if the city okays the fixed $650 million investment proposed by the Panthers on Monday, then a discussion about a new stadium will happen.

Tepper Sports & Entertainment ranked 19th-most valuable sports empire

Tepper Sports & Entertainment ranks 19th on Forbes’ list of the most valuable sports empires for 2023.

Carolina Panthers owner David Tepper might not have himself a head coach quite yet, but he does have himself one heck of a business.

On Tuesday, Forbes.com—courtesy of staffers Mike Ozanian and Justin Teitelbaum—released its list of the world’s 25 most valuable “sports empires” for 2023. These empires, which carry a combined total worth of $173 billion, are compromised of multiple sports and media organizations—which can include teams (of course), broadcast platforms, sponsorships, mixed-use real estate and sports-based technology.

Coming in at No. 19 is Tepper & Sports Entertainment. Tepper’s empire, off the strength of the Panthers and Charlotte FC, is valued at $4.55 billion.

Tepper, whose net worth was valued at $16.7 billion on the Forbes World’s Billionaires List in 2022, purchased the Panthers in 2018 at a then-NFL record $2.275 billion. As of August, they’re valued at $3.6 billion.

The former hedge fund giant then founded Charlotte FC in December of 2019. His footy team, as of September, sits at $570 million—nearly twice the worth from their inaugural season.

Now, we’ll soon find out who wants to take some of those Tepper bucks in leading his prized investment.
