Tee Morant, Pelicans players give advice to young athletes at camp

Tee Morant referenced Ja when talking about decision-making while CJ McCollum spoke about work ethic to basketball campers in New Orleans.

Tee Morant, the father of Memphis Grizzlies star guard Ja Morant, appeared at the Up Next Elite Camp in New Orleans alongside Pelicans players to give some advice to the young basketball players in attendance.

Morant referenced Ja in his speech, which was posted to Twitter by Pelicans content manager Rel Myers. The audio is a little hard to hear, so the transcription might not be exact, but Morant emphasized being careful of the decisions being made:

“Make sure anytime y’all anywhere, know the capabilities of everybody around you,” he said. “My son didn’t get in trouble for the people around him. He got in trouble for his decisions.”

He advised to assume everybody “is looking at you” and that “everything is magnified.”

Myers also tweeted videos of players, including Elfrid Payton, an NBA veteran currently on a team in Puerto Rico, and Pelicans player CJ McCollum. McCollum said that work ethic is the key to separating yourself from the competition.

“You can control how hard you train and how hard you defend. You can also control how you prepare,” he said.

Visit Myer’s page for a variety of videos from the youth basketball event, including a clip of a camper trying, with no avail, to get past the defensive pest of Jose Alvardo.

The Grizzlies will face the Splash Brothers. They’ve been regarded as the league’s best backcourt for a while.
I asked Ja Morant & Desmond Bane what people need to know about the Grizzlies’ backcourt:
Ja: “We feel like we’re one of the best backcourts in the league as well.” – 12:44 AM

Desmond Bane deserves his national respect after that series. He just shot 50-48-90 on 24 points per game against a legit defense that made it a focal point to slow him down later in the series. He’ll be playing in Memphis alongside Ja Morant for a long time. He was the MVP. – 12:00 AM

Minnesota made a concerted effort to get Ja Morant switched onto Anthony Edwards multiple possessions in a row to close that 1Q (and Edwards went on a heater as a result). That’s a matchup Grizzlies have to figure out how to avoid. – 9:42 PM

More on this storyline

The two fathers — Karl Towns Sr. and …

The two fathers — Karl Towns Sr. and Tee Morant — have made this series even more entertaining with their comical wisecracks as they root for their sons in their courtside seats. Towns says he’s enjoying observing his father’s happiness. “It’s awesome for my father to get to watch one of his best friends’ sons play against me. It’s really cool and a great experience,” Towns told Yahoo Sports. “It’s something that I don’t think many people get to experience in this league. It’s something that’s very different to see two superstars going at it in the NBA and it’s actually their dads, not the players, who are super good friends. So then the players build the bond around that.”

Ja Morant and Karl-Anthony Towns’ dads shared some delightful trash talk with each other and we need more of this

The AAU dads of the NBA are back.

I know everybody has a podcast these days when everybody doesn’t really need to have a podcast these days, but can we please get Tee Morant and Karl-Anthony Towns Sr. on a podcast or simulcast together or something?

These two just make magic happen when they talk, man. It’s pretty incredible.

Ja Morant’s dad and Karl-Anthony Towns’ dad have had a friendly back-and-forth going since game 1 of the Timberwolves-Grizzlies series and it has just been the best.

They’re literally getting up to go at each other in the middle of the game like they’re still AAU basketball dads. Except it’s the NBA. It’s amazing.

It all started during game 1 when Tee Morant told ESPN’s cameras “we ain’t ducking no smoke. Memphis, Memphis, Memphis,” after jawing with Karl-Anthony Towns Sr.

Now, the two are back at it again, but this time they’re doing sideline interviews with NBA TV’s Chris Haynes while talking perfect smack.

Towns Sr. said “they get a little lead, now they want to talk,” to which Morant responded “we gave y’all that first win so y’all would feel like you in the playoffs,” and, quite frankly, this is perfect.

They’ve even got a friendly wager placed on the series. If the Grizzlies win, Towns has to wear a Morant jersey. If the Timberwolves win, Morant has to wear a Towns jersey. Either way, we all win.

Listen. Here is what I’m proposing. Let’s just mic these two up and put them on an NSFW simulcast so they can talk unfiltered trash to everyone. If we can sit for hours and listen to Peyton and Eli Manning talk about whatever, we can almost certainly listen to these two, right? Right. Somebody pull some strings and make this happen.

It’s a layup. The people absolutely love this trash-talk between the two of them and I can’t blame them.
