2023 Ryder Cup Saturday morning pairings, tee times see Team Europe roll out sweep lineup

Europe is staying with its four pairings that swept the U.S. on Friday morning while the Americans make changes.

The United States made history on Friday, but not in a good way.

The Americans failed to win a match on Friday at the 2023 Ryder Cup at Marco Simone Golf and Country Club near Rome, Italy, marking the first time the U.S. has gone a full day without a win in the event’s nearly 100-year history.

The Europeans brought their brooms on Friday morning and swept the U.S. in foursomes before 2½ more points to their tally in afternoon fourballs to claim a 6½-1½ lead after Day 1.

How will the Americans respond on Saturday morning? By sending out two pairings from the Friday morning session and sticking with two that earned ties in the afternoon.

Check out the four matches and pairings, as well as the eight players who will ride the pine pony for the third session of matches at the 2023 Ryder Cup.

How the song ‘Staying Alive’ helped Europe battle back from a 4-0 deficit at the 2023 Solheim Cup

All it took was a few songs.

The European Solheim Cup team can relate to the plight of Zach Johnson’s Ryder Cup team.

After the Americans swept the Friday morning foursomes session in Spain at the Solheim Cup, the situation was reversed one week later in Rome.

Now it’s Team Europe that owns a commanding 4-0 lead after the opening session.

So how did the Euros manage to turn things around last week after such a demoralizing start?

Dame Laura Davies, one of Suzann Pettersen’s assistant captains, said on Golf Channel earlier this week that she gives massive credit to Charley Hull’s caddie Adam Woodward.

After the morning shellacking, Woodward played two songs back-to-back in the European team room: “Staying Alive” by the Bee Gees and “Things Can Only Get Better” by Howard Jones.

“As players trickled in … the mood was very quiet,” said Davies, “so Adam did a very clever thing by putting those two songs on, and everyone was chuckling going out into the afternoon knowing we had a job ahead of us, but that team spirit from the European team room sent everybody out in a slightly better mood than when they walked in, and that’s very important.”

Best of the best: Ryder Cup all-time points leaders for Europe, United States

Brush up on your Ryder Cup history with this list of all-time points leaders for Europe and the U.S.

Over its nearly 100-year history the Ryder Cup has featured some impressive performances from the world’s best players, especially since the competition switched to include all of Europe back in 1979.

From Nick Faldo and Arnold Palmer to Sergio Garcia and Tiger Woods, a handful of players have stood out with their play and find themselves on the all-time points list in the biennial bash.

Of the top 10, six are European players, but when it comes to the top 20 — which includes a handful of active players — the split is right down the middle at 10 a piece.

As the teams of 12 from both the United States and Europe prepare to square off in the next round of matches at Marco Simone Golf and Country Club in Italy this week, take a scroll through the all-time points winners in Ryder Cup history from both squads.

2023 Ryder Cup Friday afternoon fourball pairings, tee times feature Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas

The Europeans swept the morning foursomes session at Marco Simone.

It was an all-blue morning in Italy.

The Europeans swept the opening session of the 2023 Ryder Cup at Marco Simone Golf and Country Club near Rome on Friday morning, taking the first foursomes session 4-0 at the expense of an American side that seemingly never got off the bus.

The session was so dominant that none of the matches reached the 18th green, and the first two came to a close on No. 15.

Looking ahead to the afternoon, all 24 competitors will see action on Day 1 as the four players from each team who sat in the morning will get their chance to tee it up in the afternoon.

Check out the four matches and pairings, as well as the eight players who will ride the pine pony for the second session of matches at the 2023 Ryder Cup. (Note: Italy is six hours ahead of Eastern Time in the U.S.).

Just hours into the 2023 Ryder Cup, golf fans were already fed up with the TV broadcast

NBC Sports and Golf Channel employees may want to stay off social media for the next few days.

NBC Sports and Golf Channel employees may want to stay off social media for the next few days.

Not even two hours in to the coverage of the Friday foursomes matches at the 2023 Ryder Cup at Marco Simone Golf and Country Club in Italy and television viewers who were awake at 1 a.m. ET for the start were already fed up with the coverage (or lack thereof).

Airing on USA Network, the broadcast missed the introductions and tee shots from the third match of Shane Lowry and Sepp Straka vs. Rickie Fowler and Collin Morikawa and showed more commercials than golf shots.

This year’s broadcast features a score bug in the bottom right of the screen that shows the matches and live results, which is a nice innovation, except when the coverage doesn’t provide context for how those scores came to be.

The 44th Ryder Cup is over with Team Europe claiming a 16 ½ to 11 ½ victory at Marco Simone Golf & Country Club in Rome, Italy.

The first staging of the event was in 1927 and it featured a team of Americans taking on a group from Great Britain. In 1973, that team grew to include golfers from Ireland. In 1979, it expanded again to include players from across Europe.

The U.S. has not won the Ryder Cup away from home since 1993 and that streak will continue at least until 2027, when the biennial competition returns to Europe at Adare Manor in Ireland.

Ryder Cup 2023 live updates: Team USA vs. Team Europe at Marco Simone

Live updates from the 2023 Ryder Cup from Marco Simone Golf and Country Club.

The 44th Ryder Cup is upon us but it’s been an ugly start for the Americans.

The Europeans pounced early and finished the first day leading 6½-1 ½. The Euros did that once before in 2004 in Detroit.

“There’s a ways to go in this Ryder Cup,” writes Golfweek‘s Eamon Lynch “but if the U.S. loses there will be plenty of blame to go around.”

Perhaps the U.S. team, which started the first day 0-4, can draw inspiration from the European Solheim Cup team, which also started 0-4 before going on to retain that Cup.

The host course, Marco Simone Golf & Country Club in Rome, is a public-access layout with tee times available on the course’s website starting at 190 Euros for international players. The course playing to a par of 71 with the scorecard showing 7,181 yards. The rough is deep and thick, putting an emphasis on accurate tee shots to relatively tight fairways.

The Americans, captained by Zach Johnson, are trying to win on foreign soil for the first time since 1993. Team Europe, meanwhile, is hoping an influx of young talent will help captain Luke Donald reverse a lopsided loss at Whistling Straits in 2021.
