The historic old Boston Garden’s closing ceremony in 1995

The old Boston Garden was the home of the Celtics from 1946 to 1995.

The original home of the Boston Celtics opened in 1928. It was a building designed by boxing promoter Tex Rickard and named “Boston Madison Square Garden” before it was shortened to “Boston Garden,” the so-called “old” Garden was the home venue of the Celtics from their inaugural season of 1946-47 until its closure in 1995.

When it was decommissioned in favor of the more modern building built just aside it now known as “TD Garden,” a special closing ceremony was held after the last game (a preseason exhibition tilt between the Boston Bruins and the Montreal Canadiens on September 26, 1995). After the ceremony, all the banners and other regalia was symbolically taken down to move to the new arena.

Watch the video short embedded below put together by CLNS Media to get a glimpse into that historic day, the last for what was hallowed ground for New England Sports for decades.

Why have fans of the Boston Celtics been so quiet at the Garden in the playoffs?

You may have noticed that TD Garden might have been a bit quieter than fans of the Celtics are accustomed to hearing.

You may have noticed that TD Garden might have been a bit quieter than fans of the Boston Celtics are accustomed to hearing during a playoff run over the course of the Celtics’ series against the Miami Heat and the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Why have fans of the Celtics been so quiet at the Garden in the playoffs? It has been eerily subdued on Boston’s home court in some fairly big postseason moments over the last few weeks. What could be the cause of this odd phenomena in a building known to be one of the loudest arenas in the league under normal circumstances.

The hosts of the CLNS Media “How Bout Them Celtics!” podcast, Jack Simone, and Sam LaFrance, took a deep dive into the possible causes on a recent episode. Check it out below!

Breaking down the wild Boston Celtics – Minnesota Timberwolves finish

Can the Celtics go undefeated at home this season?

In their quest to set the franchise single-season streak for the most consecutive home wins without a loss, the Boston Celtics narrowly escaped the Minnesota Timberwolves in overtime 127-120. The win was a tough one for the Eastern Conference’s top ball club as they faced their equivalent in the West in the Timberwolves.

Though both squads were without their starting centers, the game was still among the best of the season so far, and in some corners the very best played in 2023-24 to date. With Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown combining for 80 points in the victory and Tatum matching his season high of 45 points, one could easily miss the lockdown defense they brought to bear on Minnesota.

The Celtics needed both to prevail in what the “Thinking Basketball” podcast asks us if it was the best contest of the season in a breakdown they did after Boston’s unexpected comeback win.

Jones sat down with us to talk playing at TD Garden, and what she thinks about Boston so far this season.

When it comes to basketball in New England, TD Garden is the epicenter, and soon, the WNBA’s Connecticut Sun will play there for the first time. She also talked about what she thinks of the Celtics this season as they dominate the NBA, and what she thinks of the rise of Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum, and more.

Watch TD Garden transform from a Boston Bruins rink to the Celtics’ parquet

The speed at which the arena crew can get the transition done is truly impressive to see.

The TD Garden has long been a hub for sports and entertainment in Boston, hosting a variety of events, from hockey games to concerts, and is of course the home arena of not only the NBA’s Boston Celtics but also the Boston Bruins of the NHL.

Most of the time, there is plenty of time between the nights where the Celtics and Bruins play during the part of the year when their respective seasons overlap. But sometimes, due to scheduling quirks, the ice-covered arena of the Bruins needs to turn into the Celtics’ parquet court in a hurry, or the reverse. The speed at which the arena crew can get the transition done is truly impressive to see.

If you have never witnessed the changeover for yourself, the folks behind the Connor Sports YouTube channel caught the teardown of a Bruins game for a Celtics tilt, and sped it up for your viewing pleasure in the video embedded below.

Connecticut Sun announce game at TD Garden this summer as WNBA’s Brionna Jones mingles with Jaylen Brown

The Connecticut Sun visited the Boston Celtics Thursday night while announcing future plans to play a regular season game at TD Garden this summer.

Thursday evening the Boston Celtics hosted WNBA star Brionna Jones as members of the Connecticut Sun visited TD Garden to watch their NBA counterparts take on the Cleveland Cavaliers. Jones embraced with Jaylen Brown before the game to take photos and swap jerseys, but the meeting also helped celebrate the news that the Sun are set to play a regular season game at the Garden in Boston this summer.

Jones was one of a number of people from the Sun orbit in attendance for the game who met with their Celtics counterparts prior to the game. Team president Jennifer Rizzotti was in attendance, as was Sun color commentator Ashley Battle, who also works as a scout for Boston.

TD Garden president Glen Thornborough was also part of the meet-up.

What’s behind the Boston Celtics’ hot start at home?

The Celtics have turned in an 11-0 record at home to start their current campaign.

Ahead of the Boston Celtics‘ second tilt of the week vs. the Cleveland Cavaliers at TD Garden, the Celtics have turned in an 11-0 record at home to start their current campaign. A 12-0 start has not been accomplished since the last time Boston hung a banner, so fans of the storied ball club are crossing their fingers this portends similar things in the Celtics’ short-term future.

The latest episode of the CLNS Media “Big Three NBA” podcast discusses the Celtics’ success at home so far this season, with the show’s hosts crediting the team’s homecourt dominance largely to the team’s talent and chemistry, particularly with its starting lineup.

A. Sherrod Blakely, Gary Washburn, and Kwani A. Lunis offer their insights into Boston’s hot start at home.

TD Garden has become a fortress for the Boston Celtics

The Celtics are currently one of two undefeated teams at home, with a 9-0 record in their home arena.

TD Garden has become a stronghold for the Boston Celtics as they continue their undefeated streak at home this season. The ball club’s success at home is key for their hopes of winning an NBA-record 18th championship, especially considering their struggles in home playoff games in recent years.

The Celtics are currently one of two undefeated teams at home, with a 9-0 record in their home arena, and they have been able to feed off the energy of the home crowd to help win critical victories. The crowd’s trust in the roster and the players’ efforts on the court have created a strong relationship between the two sides of the equation.

The hosts of the CLNS Media “How Bout Them Celtics!” podcast recently took a closer look at the Celtics success at TD Garden early in the 2023-24 season on a recent episode.

Boston Celtics’ TD Garden gets top marks in NBA arena media survey

The Garden — as it is sometimes called — secured a total of 74.86% of the maximum possible vote from media members.

The people have spoken! In a recent media poll conducted by our sister site HoopsHype which ranked all 29 NBA arenas from best to worst based on the opinions of 35 media members who have traveled to various arenas across the country, TD Garden in Boston, MA emerged as the top-ranked NBA arena in the poll.

The Garden — as it is sometimes called — secured a total of 74.86% of the maximum possible vote from media members. The arena, home to the Boston Celtics as well as the NHL’s Boston Bruins, underwent a $70 million renovation in 2014 as well as a more recent upgrade in 2019. It has a total capacity of 19,156 (barring exceptional events when it has been slightly expanded), and opened in 1995 to replace the old Boston Garden immediately adjacent until torn down.

The criteria used in the media poll conducted by HoopsHype in their evaluation included the home crowd’s overall atmosphere and level of energy, the quality of the arena more generally, the available culinary offerings for fans to partake in, and the arena’s lighting.

Boston Celtics get a perfect score in new assessment of NBA arena transit

The Boston Celtics’ home arena of TD Garden received the highest possible score of 100 for walkability in the assessment.

In a recent ranking by Walk Score, a subsidiary of Redfin that focuses on promoting walkable neighborhoods, all 29 NBA arenas (the Los Angeles Clippers and Lakers share an arena) have been assessed for their transit scores based on “population density, street design and amenities within a 5–30 min. walk from the stadium”. The Boston Celtics’ home arena of TD Garden received the highest possible score of 100 for walkability in the assessment according to a recent article by Axios’ Analis Bailey.

Along with the Celtics, The New York Knicks’ Manhattan-based Madison Square Garden, the Washington Wizards arena — Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C. — and the Brooklyn Nets’ Barclays Center also received a perfect score in terms of easy access for pedestrians.

In other words, fans visiting these arenas can easily access public transit, making their trips to and from the games convenient and efficient, with a “transit score of 90–100 means public transportation near the arena” meaning it “is world class”.

The worst arena per the analysis? The San Antonio Spurs’ Frost Bank Arena with a rating of just 35.
