TCU vs Texas Tech Game Preview

Why Texas Tech Will Win

Poor Texas Tech. What’s the point of even showing up?

TCU is the hipster favorite to crash the College Football Playoff party with its high-powered offense and intimidating defense that’s making big plays – and knocking around quarterbacks – on a regular basis.

Poor, poor Texas Tech … if only the passing game could show up again after royally screwing up in the 45-17 loss to Baylor last week …

The offense is going to be a problem for the Horned Frogs. Throw for 300 on this D and the game is going to be tight.

TCU didn’t have to deal with Oklahoma’s Dillon Gabriel or Jalon Daniels of Kansas – it knocked both quarterbacks out of the respective games – and banged up the Kansas State quarterbacks.

However, it got pushed a bit by SMU allowing 372 yards in the 42-34 win. Now it’s up to the Red Raiders to start winging it around and put pressure on the TCU secondary from the start.

Why TCU Will Win

The Texas Tech quarterback situation is … interesting.

It has three viable options now after health problems early on, but it appeared to be Behren Morton’s gig after two great performances against Oklahoma State and West Virginia. Baylor had other ideas.

Morton couldn’t get anything going last week, threw three picks, Donovan Smith threw two passes with one interception, and Tyler Shough came in and threw two passes – one to each team.

It was an aberration for the high-powered passing team, but it exposed one potential issue – pass protection.

Baylor allowed six sacks, but that’s not new for this group. The line is the worst in the Big 12 in sacks and tackles for loss allowed. TCU doesn’t have too much of a pass rush, but it can generate pressure.

That, and …

What’s Going To Happen

TCU doesn’t turn the ball over.

The O has given it up just six times all year, and the offense is in a wonderful groove that won’t stop against the Texas Tech defense that’s fine, not great.

This will be a fun shootout with both teams having their moments, but TCU will come through late with two big scoring drives to get out with a much, much tougher game than it might like.

TCU vs Texas Tech Game Preview

Why TCU Will Win

The defense continues to be terrific.

The Horned Frogs have a nice mix that can work on just about anyone. It might allow way to many teams to shoot well, but it manages to keep scores low – it allows 63 points per game – and it rebounds everything.

There are more than enough offensive boards to make up for the mediocre three-point shooting, there aren’t a ton of second chance points on the other end, and when the inside game is working, everything else comes together.

Texas Tech isn’t going to come out and hang 90 on the board – it’s going to want to play a relatively low scoring, tough battle, too, but …

– Latest Polls AP | Coaches

Why Texas Tech Will Win

TCU is playing great defense and gets a whole lot of rebounds. Texas Tech’s D is better.

It’s No. 1 in the Big 12 and among the best in the nation at keeping teams from hitting their shots, allowing just 38% from the field and doing a nice job of slowing down the three.

No, it doesn’t rebound quite as well as TCU does, and it’s going to have to fight a bit to grab the defensive boards, but this shouldn’t be an issue.

TCU isn’t going to be scary from the outside, so as simple as this sounds …

Top 25 Game Previews, Predictions

What’s Going To Happen

Texas Tech needs to just make its shots.

It was able to get by West Virginia despite an inability to hit anything from the outside, and it got rocked by Oklahoma after making 2-of-17 from three.

TCU doesn’t have a strong enough offense to crank up big points, but it’s not bad on the road and the rebounds will be there. Texas Tech’s defense, though, will be too good.

The Red Raiders are 14-0 at United Supermarkets. That’s not stopping.

TCU vs Texas Tech Game Preview

Why TCU Will Win

It’s a stunningly flawed TCU team – more on that in a moment – but the parts that work are really, really strong.

The offense is amazing on third downs – it’s No. 2 in the nation converting 50% or more of its chances in every game. The punting game is amazing, QB  Max Duggan is a veteran who’s great in the red zone, and the offensive line is giving everyone time to work.

Texas Tech’s secondary is getting bombed on and the offense never has the ball. It’s about pacing, but TCU might be able to control the game and the clock a bit. In a strange way, the inability of the Horned Frog D to rush the passer doesn’t hurt – Texas Tech gets rid of the ball fast.

However …

Week 6 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Texas Tech Will Win

It would be nice if TCU could generate some pressure on the QB, but it just doesn’t.

Former Utah State starting quarterback Henry Colombi followed head coach Matt Wells to Texas Tech, and he’s coming through large after Tyler Shough went down. The veteran threw for close to 300 yards with three touchdowns over the last two weeks, and he was steady enough in the win over West Virginia.

Again, TCU doesn’t get to the quarterback, and that’s partly why it’s so awful at coming up with third down stops. Texas Tech can run a little bit, and TCU is bad at stopping that, too.

Week 6 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Is this that strange week when TCU all of a sudden flips a switch and is good at defense again?

The Horned Frogs couldn’t stop Texas from running, couldn’t stop Cal from passing well, and it couldn’t seem to stop anything against SMU.

It’s not like Texas Tech is playing any defense, either, but at home, the offense will be just a little bit sharper with the ground game cranking up to control the clock a bit more.
