Why TCU Will Win

The No. 4 team in the nation – at least according to the College Football Playoff – keeps on answering every challenge.

It was a touchdown underdog on the road against Kansas – and the defense rose up and stuffed Bijan Robinson in the 17-10 win.

There were supposed to be problems in various offensive fights throughout the Big 12 season – and TCU has always been a wee bit better.

The team just doesn’t make enough mistakes. It’s one of the best in the country at limiting penalties, it only turned it over seven times, and the offensive versatility allows to adapt and adjust to the game flow.

It might be TCU’s biggest strength – it has a way of finding a way to come through when needed to maintain control.

On the flip side, Baylor has to run well to win. It’s 5-0 when running for over 170 yards – 230 or more in each of those – and 1-4 when it doesn’t.

TCU has yet to allow more than 200 yards on the ground and gave up over 170 just three times.

Bowl Projections

Why Baylor Will Win

The Baylor defense is the second-best in the Big 12.

The TCU offense really is that good – it’s the best in the conference – but it has yet to face the by-far best D in the league – Iowa State – and now it gets the Bear defense.

Texas was able to keep the Horned Frogs under wraps last week, holding the running game to a season-low 3.6 yards per carry and allowed just 124 passing yards.

The Baylor defense has the ability to take the ball away in bunches – it came up with eight takeaways in the two games before the stunning 31-3 loss to Kansas State – and it needs to control the clock.

TCU was able to get by Texas last week in the fight by dominating the time of possession battle. It’s not going to be able to do that against Baylor.

Schedules, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Baylor might hold on to the ball for over 32 minutes and come up with a few takeaways, but TCU will adjust.

Once again, there will be chances for the other side to take over and pull off the win, and once again TCU will rise up with a timely stop, a key scoring drive, and whatever it needs to do to slip on by.

TCU vs Baylor Game Preview

Why TCU Will Win

Baylor was able to battle for a while against Texas Tech, but it couldn’t keep up the pace in the 83-73 loss in the first game after losing Jonathan Tchamwa Tchatchou to an injury.

TCU might not have a whole lot to offensive firepower, and it might not be Texas Tech defensively, but it’s great at dominating on the boards – it leads the Big 12 in rebounding margin – and it’s great at keeping the score low.

Make this a battle in the low-60s, make it a free throw contest – Baylor isn’t great on the line – and shoot a wee bit better than it did in the 76-64 loss to the Bears in the first meeting back in early January.

But …

– Latest Polls AP | Coaches

Why Baylor Will Win

Baylor was able to roll in the second half in the first meeting and ended up winning easily with Tchamwa Tchatchou not doing a whole lot.

Baylor might be incredibly inconsistent, but it’s doing a great job overall at home and it has the scoring punch from the outside to take over without any real worry about a bit run from TCU.

The Horned Frogs don’t do anything from three, and even when they do – like against Texas Tech a few days ago – it still usually isn’t enough to matter.

What’s Going To Happen

Baylor is just fine on the boards.

The defense might have struggled late against Texas Tech, but it’ll keep TCU from doing anything on the outside, there won’t be enough lost rebounds to make too much of a difference, and the will be more than enough steals and big defensive plays to overcome the rocky parts.

Why TCU Will Win

Baylor’s offense can’t run.

A struggling ground game is equaling fewer first downs – fewest in the Big 12 – and an offense that’s having problems scoring. That the Bears have only scored seven times in 11 red zone trips is part of the issue, too.

Baylor simply hasn’t been able to score over the last two games after rolling Kanas to start the season.

But it’s really about the inability to run the ball.

The 2019 Bears averaged 4.6 yards per carry with 35 touchdowns. They only managed to run for fewer than 100 yards three times. Once was in the Big 12 Championship against Oklahoma, once was in the Sugar Bowl against Georgia, and the other time was a 99-yard day against TCU.

Baylor has failed to run for 65 yards – with no scores – in each of the last two games.

Why Baylor Will Win

TCU’s offense has come to a stop.

Kansas State and Oklahoma have okay defenses, but they’re hardly the killers that should only decent teams to just 14 points. TCU rolled past 450 yards in each of the first two games, and failed to get to 360 in either of the last two – both losses.

What’s been the problem? The Horned Frogs can’t convert on third downs, the running game hasn’t been effective enough, and the takeaways aren’t coming to help make everything easier with just four on the year and one in the last two games.

Baylor might have a slew of issues, but it’s not having a turnover problem. It’s not going to hand TCU easy points.

What’s Going To Happen

Baylor hasn’t been able to find any sort of a groove so far.

The team has only played three games, it’s had to deal with virus issues, and it’s all happening with a new coaching staff and a whole slew of new parts to last year’s great puzzle.

It’s losing the tight games – at least so far – that the 2019 team was able to win.

TCU is 0-3 at home, 1-0 on the road, and it’s lone win came against Texas in a thriller that could’ve and should’ve gone the other way.

At home, Baylor will finally get just enough of the offensive parts moving to win a very close, very tight battle with QB Charlie Brewer carrying the team in the fourth quarter.
