Three stars as Iowa women’s basketball rights ship vs. Washington

Three stars as Iowa rights the ship vs. Washington.

After five consecutive losses, Iowa women’s basketball (13-7, 3-6 Big Ten) finally got back in the win column Wednesday night with an 85-61 landslide victory over Washington from Alaska Airlines Arena in Seattle, Wash.

Iowa shot a scorching 33-of-46 (71.7%) from the floor, 9-of-13 (69.2%) from deep, and 10-of-14 (71.4%) from the free throw line. The Hawkeyes also caused 14 Huskies turnovers, including six blocks and four steals.

The victory comes at a much-needed time as Iowa halted their losing streak with a Quad 1 victory before flying home to Iowa City with their next matchup vs. Northwestern on Tuesday at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

As the Hawkeyes head back home, here are the three stars that helped push Iowa to victory on Wednesday.

Lucy Olsen

Senior guard Lucy Olsen erupted for 20 points on a perfect shooting night as she shot 8-of-8 (100%) from the floor, including 4-of-4 (100%) from beyond the arc. She also registered six assists and one steal to close out her 32 minutes of action.

For Olsen, this game was enormous as she had only recorded 12.2 points per game over the previous five games and had not surpassed 19 points since Dec. 20.

Addison O’Grady

Senior center Addison O’Grady had a monster game down low for the Hawkeyes as she scored 17 points on 8-of-12 (75%) from the floor and 1-of-2 (50%) from the charity stripe. She also finished her 20 minutes of action with four rebounds, two assists, and one block.

O’Grady’s stellar performance was crucial to Iowa’s ability to score from the paint and allowed the Hawkeyes to establish a dominant presence down low.

Taylor McCabe

McCabe finished with 12 points on 4-of-6 (66.7%) shooting from the field but she was lethal from 3-point territory, going 3-of-5 (60%) from downtown. She also finished with two rebounds and one assist in 26 minutes.

McCabe’s performance played a massive role in the Hawkeyes’ blazing shooting night from deep and allowed Iowa to basically be in cruise control from the end of the first quarter.

As previously mentioned, Iowa’s next game will be on Tuesday vs. Northwestern (7-10, 0-6 Big Ten) from Carver-Hawkeye Arena at 7 p.m. CT and will air on the Big Ten Network (BTN).

Iowa women’s basketball three stars following 80-68 win vs. Penn State

Looking back on three stars for Iowa women’s basketball in its road win at Penn State.

The No. 22-ranked Iowa women’s basketball team (12-2, 2-1 Big Ten) welcomed the New Year with a hard-fought 80-68 Wednesday win over Penn State (9-5, 0-3 Big Ten) from the Bryce Jordan Center in University Park, Penn.

The Lady Lions and Hawkeyes both played three competitive quarters until Iowa pulled away in the fourth quarter following six consecutive baskets and nine of their final 12 field goal attempts.

As a team, Iowa finished by shooting 32-of-61 (52.5%) from the floor, 7-of-21 (33.3%) from 3-point range and 9-of-13 (69.2%) from the charity stripe. As has become the norm, Iowa dominated the points in the paint production by outscoring Penn State 46-26 in that area.

Defensively, Iowa forced 15 turnovers, including eight steals and two blocks. The Hawkeyes also held the Lady Lions to 28-for-69 (40.6%) shooting from the field and 8-of-30 (26.7%) from deep.

As Iowa picks up a crucial second Big Ten road victory, here are three Hawkeyes that stood out the most on Wednesday.

Taylor McCabe

Junior guard Taylor McCabe led the Hawkeyes in scoring with a season-high 17-point performance on 5-of-8 (62.5%) from 3-point territory and converted both free throw opportunities during her 28 minutes off the bench.

The junior guard also recorded three rebounds, three assists and two steals to round out her impactful night.

Despite contributing off the bench, McCabe’s ability to be a reliable 3-point threat has made her a unique offensive weapon for the Hawkeyes thus far. On Wednesday in particular, McCabe was able to fill in for a struggling Kylie Feuerbach, who played just 10 minutes.

Addison O’Grady

Senior center Addison O’Grady was a force against Penn State, finishing with 16 points on a perfect 8-for-8 (100%) shooting performance from the floor to pair with four rebounds and one steal in 22 minutes.

While sharing minutes with freshman center Ava Heiden, O’Grady’s efficiency with the basketball is exactly what the Hawkeyes need, especially given the competitiveness of the conference this season.

For the senior center, it is her second game this season with a perfect shooting night and her first since Iowa’s 71-52 win vs. Virginia Tech on Nov. 10, where she scored 18 points off 9-for-9 shooting.

Hannah Stuelke

Junior forward Hannah Stuelke finished third in team scoring on Wednesday with 13 points off 5-of-7 (71.4%) field goal shooting and 3-of-6 (50%) from the charity stripe. The senior forward also recorded 10 rebounds, four assists, one block, and one steal in her 28 minutes on the court.

Wednesday was Stuelke’s second double-double of the season, her first since Iowa’s 71-58 win vs. Kansas on Nov. 20 and the sixth of her Hawkeye career.

After the New Year’s Day victory over Penn State, Iowa will return home to Carver-Hawkeye Arena for a premier conference matchup on Jan. 5 against No. 7 Maryland at 5 p.m. CT on the Big Ten Network. The game will also be available on the Hawkeyes Radio Network.

The upcoming clash with the Terrapins is also Iowa’s designated “Lisa Bluder Celebration” night to pair with its “Alumni Night” festivities.

Three stars from Iowa women’s basketball win vs. Northern Iowa

Three stars from No. 22 Iowa women’s basketball’s 92-86 win vs. Northern Iowa.

The No. 22-ranked Iowa women’s basketball team (10-2, 0-1 Big Ten) rebounded from their loss to Michigan State with a rugged 92-86 victory on Friday night vs. Northern Iowa (5-6) from Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

While the Panthers’ top scoring threat, Maya McDermott, scored an impressive 30 points, the Hawkeyes were able to stave off a late Northern Iowa charge to improve to 10-2 on the campaign.

Offensively, Iowa shot 31-for-62 (50%) from the field, 10-for-26 (38.5%) from deep, and 20-for-22 (90.9%) from the charity stripe. The Hawkeyes also outscored the Panthers 40-36 from within the paint, which has been a recipe for success so far for Iowa.

While Northern Iowa shot relatively well throughout the night, with 48.4% shooting from the field and 36% from beyond the arc, Iowa was able to force nine turnovers, including four steals and three blocks.

With another hard-fought victory in the books, here are three Hawkeyes that stood out Friday night.

Lucy Olsen

Olsen excelled once again Friday night with a team-high 21 points off 7-of-16 (43.8%) from the floor, 2-of-5 (40%) from deep, and 5-of-6 (83.3%) from the free-throw line.

In addition to her scoring, Olsen added seven assists and five rebounds to close out her 34 minutes of game action.

For Olsen, she is the obvious heartbeat of the Hawkeyes’ offensive attack and has been everything Iowa hoped for when they added the senior out of the offseason transfer portal.

Addison O’Grady

Jeffrey Becker-Imagn Images

O’Grady had a monstrous game against the Panthers on Friday with 18 points off 8-of-10 (80%) from the field and 2-of-2 (100%) from the free-throw line. The sophomore center also added six rebounds and one assist to her 32 minutes of action.

O’Grady’s performance snaps her out of a “cold spell” as she had combined for 6 points on 26.65% shooting from the field over her previous two games.

With the Hawkeyes returning to conference play in their next game, Iowa would love to see O’Grady return to her dominant form at the five position.

Taylor McCabe

Jeffrey Becker-Imagn Images

McCabe had a season-best scoring night on Friday, with 15 points on 5-of-9 (55.6%) from the floor, including 5-of-8 from three-point territory. She also contributed three assists, two rebounds, and two steals in her 29 minutes off the bench.

McCabe’s play is a welcoming sight for Iowa as it showcases their reliable bench scoring options, which will certainly come in handy later in the season when depth is tested.

With the holiday break providing coaches and players the ability to spend time with their families, Iowa returns to play on Sunday, Dec. 29, from Carver-Hawkeye Arena vs. Purdue.

Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. CT and will air on Big Ten Network Plus (BTN+, Subscription Required).

As always, the game will be broadcast on the Hawkeyes Radio Network.

Three stars for Iowa women’s basketball vs. Michigan State

Three stars from Iowa women’s basketball’s tough battle inside the Breslin Center against Michigan State.

After a thrilling Wednesday night victory over No. 17 Iowa State from Carver-Hawkeye Arena, Iowa women’s basketball (9-2, 0-1 Big Ten) suffered their second loss of the season and first conference defeat at No. 19 Michigan State (10-0, 1-0 Big Ten) on Sunday from East Lansing, Mich., 68-66.

While both teams shared relative shooting struggles throughout the contest, with the Hawkeyes finishing with a 36.5% clip from the floor and 36.0% from deep, Iowa’s 23 total turnovers and an ice-cold finish to the game buried their hopes of exiting Breslin Center victorious.

In terms of the Hawkeyes’ defense, they finished with 14 forced turnovers, including five blocks and five steals. The Hawkeyes also outrebounded the Spartans, 44-35.

Even with Michigan State going on a furious scoring run late in the fourth quarter, the Hawkeyes found themselves with an opportunity to take the lead in the waning seconds of the game, but a missed elbow jumper from senior guard Lucy Olsen put an end to the Hawkeyes’ last-ditch effort.

Despite the close loss to Michigan State, here are three Hawkeyes that stood out in Sunday’s game.

Hannah Stuelke

Stuelke continued her stellar play as of late on Sunday by posting a team-high 18 points on 4-of-10 (40%) shooting from the field and 10-of-14 (71.4%) from the charity stripe. She also added eight rebounds, two assists, and one block to her 34 minutes of playing time.

Despite the loss, Stuelke’s performance was her team-leading sixth game this season with eight or more rebounds and her 46th career game in double figures.

Kylie Feuerbach

Feuerbach had a steady showing from beyond the arc with all 12 points coming from her 4-of-7 (57.2%) performance from deep. She also added three rebounds, two assists, and one block to close out her 27 minutes of game time.

Feuerbach’s four treys tied her career-high for 3-pointers against a Big Ten team.

Taylor McCabe

Even though McCabe played only 12 minutes, McCabe managed to knock down a pair of 3-pointers.

For McCabe, her ability to inject offense in her minimal time off the bench gives head coach Jan Jensen the confidence to provide her starters a rest while not jeopardizing Iowa’s offensive production.

The Hawkeyes’ next game will be on Friday, Dec. 20, vs. Northern Iowa (5-5) from Carver-Hawkeye Arena, with tipoff set for 6:30 p.m. CT. The game will be broadcast on BTN+ (subscription required) and the Hawkeye Radio Network.

Revisiting Iowa’s three stars in Toledo blowout

As the Hawkeyes gear up for their first road test at Drake, here’s a look back at their three stars vs. Toledo.

Iowa women’s basketball cruised to a 3-0 record on Wednesday night after a thorough 94-57 blowout victory over the Toledo Rockets from Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

The Hawkeyes controlled nearly every facet of the game on Wednesday night as the team shot 31-for-54 (57.4%) from the field, which included 4-for-14 (28.6%) from 3-point range and 28-for-32 (87.5%) from the free throw line.

Iowa secured 39 total rebounds on the night and dished out 18 assists. The Hawkeyes dominated down low, scoring 52 of their 94 points in the paint.

Defensively, the Hawkeyes held the Rockets to 21-of-67 (31.3%) from the field while registering 33 defensive rebounds, six blocks, and six steals to thwart the Toledo attack.

The victory against Toledo was truly a full team effort as five Hawkeyes scored in double figures and every available player received playing time.

Although every player had impactful contributions Wednesday night, three Hawkeyes stood out as difference-makers in the game.

Hannah Stuelke

Hannah Stuelke led the Hawkeyes in scoring with 17 points on 4-for-6 shooting from the field and a perfect 9-for-9 night from the free throw line. She also collected nine rebounds, two assists, and one block on 22:25 of playing time.

Stuelke’s performance is her 39th career game in double figures.

Lucy Olsen

Lucy Olsen continued her torrid start to the season by scoring 14 points on 6-of-9 shooting from the field. Olsen also registered four assists and two rebounds in her 29:58 on the court.

While it is a small sample size, Olsen’s Wednesday performance improves her overall shooting percentage to 51.1% to start her Iowa career and adds to her team-leading 17.7 points per game.

Taylor McCabe

Scoring a total of 14 points on 5-of-9 shooting from the field, Taylor McCabe was able to provide the Hawkeyes with valuable points from beyond the arc by finishing 4-of-8 from deep. The junior forward also collected four rebounds during her 18:19 minutes of game time off the bench.

McCabe’s performance, in addition to the rest of the team off the bench, is a very promising sight for the Hawkeyes’ scoring depth moving forward.

Iowa returns to action on Sunday as it faces its first road test at Drake from inside the Knapp Center at 2 p.m. CT on ESPN+.
