Report: Patriots hiring former Jets assistant as RB coach

The Patriots have zeroed in on an RB coach

The New England Patriots plan to hire Taylor Embree as their running backs coach, according to a report from NFL on CBS’ Jonathan Jones.

Embree, who got his coaching start as a graduate assistant at UNLV in 2012, most recently worked with the New York Jets from 2021-2023 as their running backs coach.

He served as the tight ends coach at Colorado in 2020 and also served as a defensive assistant for the Kansas City Chiefs in 2016. He also gained experience as an offensive quality control coach for the San Francisco 49ers from 2017-2019.

Embree played the wide receiver position at UCLA and tallied 137 catches for 1,776 yards and four touchdowns during his time with the program.

With this latest hire, New England is closer to filling out their staff, as coach Jerod Mayo leads a new era of Patriots football.

Taylor Embree not returning as Jets running backs coach

Taylor Embree not returning as Jets running backs coach

The Jets have been retaining some members of their offensive coaching staff, including offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett and offensive line coach Keith Carter. One member who will not be returning is running backs coach Taylor Embree, per SNY’s Connor Hughes.

Under Embree in 2023, Breece Hall rushed for almost 1,000 yards and totaled 1,585 yards in a season in which he was coming off an ACL tear from October 2022.

The Jets were reportedly interested in former Panthers running backs coach Duce Staley to fill the position but that will not happen as Staley will be joining Kevin Stefanski’s staff in Cleveland.

Or perhaps not quite yet. Josina Anderson reported Staley had dinner last week with head coach Robert Saleh and visited the facility.

Michael Carter clears up sideline argument with Taylor Embree: ‘I do have to keep my cool’

CBS cameras caught the argument between Carter and Embree.

Frustrations can easily boil over when a team isn’t living up to preseason expectations for one reason or another and players feel they aren’t getting their fair share. Case in point: CBS cameras found Jets running back Michael Carter in what seemed like a heated argument with running backs coach Taylor Embree.

Perhaps Carter was just frustrated with his usage during the 15-10 loss to the Patriots. Carter had all of one touch of the football during the game, a three-yard reception. He didn’t receive a single carry while Breece Hall had 12 and Dalvin Cook had eight.

Carter explained that incident with Embree to the media after the game:

“We’re just two competitors that really love to (expletive) win,” Carter said. “We want to go win. And we want everything to be perfect. So it was just a miscommunication on something that happened during the game. We hashed it out right away. We continued playing on. That’s what happened. It’s not as big of a deal as it looked.

“I’m 24 years old, I gotta control myself a little bit better. Also I want to say that there’s people that are going to say whatever they want about me and whatever they want about the game. But they’ve never strapped it up and played NFL football. You really got to live this life and they can’t relate because it’s an emotional game. When you really love what you do, it means everything. That being said, I do have to keep my cool.”

Through three games, Carter has three carries for 14 yards and has caught four passes for 18 yards. Carter went from being potentially — at least speculated — being on the trading block to being a safe roster lock to being invisible from the offense. It doesn’t help that Dalvin Cook has been a big disappointment through three games as a Jet (25 carries, 58 yards, seven catches, 42 yards).

Maybe this incident is nothing in the end. But reading between the lines, Carter can’t be too happy with his role so far and with the offense and coaching as a whole.

Taylor Embree talked to James Robinson about frustrations, said it will be always be committee

Taylor Embree trying to smooth things over with James Robinson after his frustrations over lack of usage.

Running back James Robinson was a surprise inactive in Week 12 against the Chicago Bears, opening the door for Ty Johnson and Zonovan Knight to make their mark this season. They did just that, combining for 131 yards on 19 carries in New York’s 31-10 win to move to 7-4.

Many folks were excited about the win. Robinson, however, began growing frustrated with his usage, or lack thereof.

“Obviously, I didn’t come here not to play,” Robinson said Wednesday, via ESPN. “Obviously, they brought me here for a reason. I don’t expect anything unless I work for it, and I’ve been working my ass off. Me not playing pisses me off.”

Robinson knew ahead of time he would not play against the Bears. He was told on Wednesday of last week by running backs coach Taylor Embree.

“Obviously, I was upset about it,” he said. “I don’t know what they have planned for me.”

Speaking to reporters Thursday, Embree shed some light on the running back situation and Robinson’s frustrations.

Embree said it will always be a committee with their system and it is a week-by-week situation. But he does understand Robinson’s frustration.

“I told him I’d be mad if you weren’t mad you weren’t playing,” Embree said. “We want guys who want to play.”

Robinson wants to play and doesn’t believe there’s any issue with him in the Jets’ system.

“I mean, picking up the runs, that’s easy,” said Robinson. “The thing is getting used to the pass game, protections and I feel like I’ve picked up that stuff up pretty good.”

Head coach Robert Saleh explained that he wanted to give Knight a chance in the rotation and that Robinson is still getting comfortable in the Jets’ zone scheme. He did add “no one has seen the last of (Robinson).”

In three games with the Jets since being acquired from the Jacksonville Jaguars, Robinson has rushed 25 times for 75 yards. 48 of those yards came in Week 9 against the Buffalo Bills. He also caught a touchdown pass in that Bills game.

The Jets are currently set to send a sixth-round pick to the Jaguars as part of the trade. It would become a fifth-round pick if Robinson hits 600 rushing yards this season. He currently sits at 415.

Robinson may get an opportunity Sunday against the Minnesota Vikings. Michael Carter has missed two days of practice and is trending toward missing Week 13. That could make Robinson the third running back this week behind Johnson and Knight. How the Jets divvy up the workload with that trio would be something to watch.

It’s just like Saleh said: “With that entire running back room, it’s going to be a week-to-week thing.”

Michael Carter led film session with running backs as RB coach Taylor Embree and wife welcomed baby

With New York Jets RBs coach Taylor Embree with his wife welcoming a new baby, RB Michael Carter took control of the film session Wednesday.

Michael Carter is only in his second season in the NFL but his leadership and maturity level are already at such a high level. Take Wednesday, for example.

Normally, running backs coach Taylor Embree leads the group during film sessions. Wednesday wasn’t a normal day, however. Embree had to miss practice but for a very good reason. He and his wife, Kristina, were welcoming their third child together.

So the running backs needed someone to lead the group. Enter Carter, who stepped up and led the backs on their film session. Carter led his group, which now currently also consists of Ty Johnson, Zonovan Knight and the newly-acquired James Robinson.

Embree told reporters Thursday that Carter is someone that always acts older than his age. For him to step up like that at just 23 years old is a testament to him as a person and shows the running back room is still in good hands even with Breece Hall out.

4 things to know about new Jets RB coach Taylor Embree

Robert Saleh’s Jets coaching staff is littered with experience, but it also features a handful of young, up-and-comers like Taylor Embree.

Robert Saleh’s first Jets coaching staff is littered with experience, but it also features a handful of young, up-and-comers in the profession.

Among them are 32-year-old Taylor Embree, who left his position as tight ends coach at the University of Colorado to coach up New York’s running backs. Embree’s appointment to Gang Green’s staff not only means a jump back into the NFL, but also a reunion with Saleh, who he spent plenty of time with when the two worked for the 49ers.

Let’s get to know a little bit more about Embree and what he brings to the Jets.

Report: Jets add 2 more coaches to Robert Saleh’s staff, including ex-Cowboys WR Miles Austin

Robert Saleh has hired Taylor Embree as his running backs coach and Miles Austin as his wide receivers coach.

Robert Saleh has made two new additions to his coaching staff.

According to the NFL Network’s Peter Schrager, Saleh has hired Taylor Embree to be his running backs coach and Miles Austin to be his wide receivers coach. The news comes a day after four other hires were reported.

With the hirings of Embree and Austin, Saleh now has six offensive assistant coaches. He has yet to hire an assistant on the defensive side of the ball.

Embree got started in coaching in 2012 when he was hired as an offensive graduate assistant for UNLV. In 2013, he moved onto UCLA, where he was a defensive graduate assistant for a year before moving back to an offensive graduate assistant for the next two years.

Embree made his jump to the NFL with the Chiefs in 2016 as a defensive assistant. He did that for a season until the 49ers hired him as an offensive quality control coach in 2017. This past season, Embree was the tight ends coach at the University of Colorado.

Austin is coming over from San Francisco, where he was the offensive quality control coach in 2019. Prior to becoming a coach, Austin was a pro and college scouting intern with the Dallas Cowboys.

Austin had a 10-year playing career in the NFL with three teams, including the Cowboys, Browns and Eagles. He had 361 catches for 5,273 yards 37 touchdowns for his career.
