Martino: MLS likely won’t play during 2024 FIFA international windows

This would be a welcome change, but could it actually work?

Is MLS on the verge of solving a problem that has dogged it since 1996?

According to Inter Miami head coach Gerardo “Tata” Martino, the league is thinking about doing away with the deeply unpopular practice of scheduling games during international windows.

“I understand that they are analyzing [how to avoid scheduling games during FIFA windows] for next year,” Martino told reporters on Tuesday. “It is probable that will happen.”

Martino was discussing the topic because he’s about to face some time without Lionel Messi. The Miami boss said that the iconic No. 10 will miss at least three of the club’s remaining 11 games due to upcoming FIFA breaks from September 4-12 and October 9-17.

That potentially throws some cold water on the idea that Miami — unbeaten in Messi’s nine appearances thus far — could manage a potentially miraculous run to an MLS playoff berth. The Herons, despite Messi Mania taking hold as the club has won the Leagues Cup and advanced to the U.S. Open Cup final, are 11 points behind the Chicago Fire, who currently sit in the final Eastern Conference playoff place.

Can MLS actually avoid playing through FIFA windows?

Messi aside, the idea that MLS could move away from something that has drawn complaints from fans, players, coaches, and teams for the league’s entire lifespan would be legitimately big news.

The gripe is obvious: Many of the league’s best players also play for their national teams. Scheduling matches while MLS sides will be without their stars makes for worse games. With no recourse — FIFA rules are crystal clear on mandating that players have to be released —  MLS teams have for over a quarter-century just forged on without them.

The league taken some steps in recent years to minimize the problem, extending the season by starting earlier and ending later. Despite expanding into an unwieldy 29 teams (a number that will grow to 30 for the 2025 season), the league has stuck with each team having 34 games, even as the schedule has become less balanced as a result.

However, this year’s Leagues Cup required a total halt to MLS league play from July 15 to August 20, more or less undoing any of the gains MLS’s previous changes had made towards the realities of FIFA’s international calendar.

As a result, MLS scheduled 99 games during 2023 FIFA breaks, the large majority of which (71) came during the Gold Cup. There were 12 additional games scheduled one day after the end of international windows, which almost always sees national team players miss out again.

When push comes to shove, there’s just no time being left on the table. MLS is already getting into dubious territory scheduling games in late February, when around 15 teams are at risk of unsafe weather conditions. MLS Cup is scheduled for December 9, and a handful of northern teams will have difficulties in guaranteeing standard outdoor training sessions should they get that far.

The MLS calendar was a tight fit without the Leagues Cup, but the league clearly has its sights set on its partnership with Liga MX growing. That event may change, but it’s not going anywhere.

In 2024, there’s no reason to expect an easier time from a scheduling perspective. The Asian Cup and African Cup of Nations are both set to run from mid-January to mid-February, while Euro 2024 and Copa América will run from June to July. In addition, March, June, September, October, and November will all feature standard international windows.

That leaves MLS with very few options. The league could extend the season earlier into February, likely obliging many teams to start the season with a road-heavy schedule, while also hurting revenue in a lot of cities due to a probable attendance drop. The playoffs could also start one week later, with the same problems coming up for what are the league’s most meaningful games.

The reality is that MLS has around 42 weekends to get its season in, from start to finish, and international breaks take up five of them. The number climbs to nine when UEFA, CONMEBOL, or CONCACAF schedules a continental competition, or during a World Cup. As CONCACAF holds the Gold Cup every two years, those nine weekends for FIFA windows are going to be there every time the league sits down to hash out a schedule.

Even if one assumes that MLS will expand one week in each direction (meaning, 44 weekends to get games in), complying with every international break leaves 35 weekends to get the job done. With the Leagues Cup taking up a month, that drops to 31, a timeframe that still has to include a longer-than-ever playoff format.

Barring a move to a winter schedule that is totally unfeasible for half the league, the only other way to work around international windows is to pack the schedule with midweek play. That’s not good either: Attendance plummets on Wednesday nights even in the best-attended MLS cities. Teams get little time to actually train and improve themselves, while players end up at risk for overuse injuries. Generally speaking, in terms of quality of play and atmosphere, midweek MLS games tend to feel like the entire league took a time machine back a decade.

Martino: Messi will miss ‘at least’ three games with Argentina duty

Inter Miami will have to win without the Argentine star to make the MLS postseason

If Inter Miami hopes to make an improbable push to the MLS playoffs, it won’t be able to count on Lionel Messi the entire way through.

Messi made a spectacular MLS debut on Saturday night against the New York Red Bulls, coming off the bench to score a late clincher in a 2-0 win at Red Bull Arena.

The win pushed Inter Miami off the bottom of the Eastern Conference table, but the club still has a mountain to climb as it sits 11 points off the final playoff spot in the East.

With Messi onboard, however, anything seems possible for the Herons. The Argentine star has led the team to a nine-game unbeaten run since his arrival, which has included a Leagues Cup title.

But speaking after the game against the Red Bulls, Inter head coach Tata Martino said that Messi would miss at least three of the club’s games down the stretch due to international duty.

“I firmly believe that it’s pivotal to appreciate the significance of this victory, as we must adapt to the reality that Leo will be joining his national team,” Martino said.

“He’ll miss at least three games this year and next year it will be the same, and we need to understand that when he’s not here the team still needs to provide results.”

Argentina will face Ecuador and Bolivia in World Cup qualifiers on September 7 and 12, and will also have World Cup qualifiers against Paraguay and Peru on October 12 and 17.

Inter Miami faces Sporting Kansas City at home on September 9, a game Messi looks certain to miss if he’s called up by Argentina. Inter Miami’s September 16 game at Atlanta United could be in question for Messi as well.

Inter Miami plays on October 7 against FC Cincinnati and then on October 18 and 21 against Charlotte FC, with Messi potentially missing one or more of those matches.

Martino: Messi will rest eventually, but not in Open Cup semifinal

The Inter Miami star has played the full 90 in five consecutive matches

Lionel Messi has been playing a lot of soccer recently.

By virtue of his incredible Leagues Cup success, Messi has now played seven games within his first month with Inter Miami. He has started all but one of those games, and has gone the full 90 in his past five.

The most recent of those outings came in Saturday’s Leagues Cup final against Nashville SC. Like every other game he’s played for the Herons so far, Messi scored and his team won.

After lifting the Leagues Cup, Inter Miami will now have the chance to clinch a double with just two more victories in the U.S. Open Cup. On Wednesday, Messi and Co. will travel to Ohio to face FC Cincinnati in the semifinal.

Speaking to the media on Monday, Inter Miami head coach Tata Martino said that he would have to rest the 36-year-old Messi at some point, but with another trophy on the line, Wednesday won’t be the time to do so.

“We said that at some point he would have to rest because of the load of minutes played,” Martino said. “Clearly, Wednesday is not going to be that day. If he does not tell me he wants to rest, he will continue to play.”

The winner the Inter Miami-Cincinnati semifinal will face either Real Salt Lake or Houston in the final on September 27.

Messi, who has now scored 10 goals in seven games with Inter Miami, has yet to play in any competition outside of the Leagues Cup. After he makes his Open Cup debut on Wednesday, he is set to play in his first MLS match on Saturday when Inter Miami faces the New York Red Bulls at Red Bull Arena.

Messi facing injury questions ahead of Leagues Cup clash at Philadelphia

Inter Miami may be sweating on the fitness of its superstar

Inter Miami may be sweating on the fitness of Lionel Messi ahead of Tuesday night’s Leagues Cup semifinal against the Philadelphia Union.

The Argentina superstar appeared to pick up a minor injury during training on Monday, though head coach Tata Martino was quick to play down any concerns over his side’s superstar.

“I was only at a part of the session because I had a meeting afterwards and was finishing preparing, so I didn’t see exactly what happened. But if it was something serious, I’m sure everyone would have been shocked,” Martino said at a press conference. “Since everyone was fine, I imagine nothing happened.”

ESPN Argentina captured the moment that Messi appeared to tweak his ankle.

Messi did at least manage to make the journey to Pennsylvania, where Inter Miami will aim to continue its perfect start to life with the Argentine star at Subaru Park in Chester on Tuesday.

Inter has won all five of its matches since Messi’s arrival, including a shootout win at FC Dallas in the Leagues Cup round of 16.

Messi has hit the ground running since his move to south Florida, scoring eight goals in just five matches. His latest strike came at the end of an easy 4-0 win over Charlotte FC in the quarterfinal.

The Union promise to be one of Inter Miami’s toughest tests in the Leagues Cup, with last season’s MLS Cup runners-up currently sitting third in the MLS Eastern Conference standings.

Lionel Messi is already captain of Inter Miami

The Argentine legend began his Inter Miami career with a dramatic free-kick winner in stoppage time

Upon entering the field for his Inter Miami debut, Lionel Messi was immediately given the captain’s armband by its previous occupant, DeAndre Yedlin.

It appears that move will be a permanent one.

At a press conference on Monday, Inter Miami head coach Tata Martino confirmed that the Argentina superstar will be the club’s captain moving forward.

When asked if Messi would continue to captain Miami, Martino responded: “The other day he was (captain) too, when he entered. Yes, he will be.”

Messi came off the bench in the 54th minute of Inter Miami’s Leagues Cup match against Cruz Azul on Friday, making his club debut alongside his longtime Barcelona teammate Sergio Busquets.

With the match tied in stoppage time, Messi won a free kick in an ideal spot for a shot on goal. With a sold-out crowd full of anticipation, the 36-year-old stepped up and delivered.

Yedlin has been wearing the armband this season after Inter Miami’s usual captain Gregore went down in March with a season-ending foot injury.

After opening the Messi era with a 2-1 win over Cruz Azul, Inter Miami is back in Leagues Cup action on Tuesday night with a home game against Atlanta United.

Martino said that after Messi and Busquets played nearly a full half against Cruz Azul, the pair would be in line for more minutes against Atlanta and could even start the game.

“It is very likely that both Leo and Busi will play more time,” Martino said. “I even think that if they are going to play more (then) we will change the dynamic and they will go maybe from the beginning. But we all know that when Leo starts, that amount of time we would be talking about is 90 minutes.”

Martino added: “But everything will depend on how they feel, it is only the second game that they are going to play.”

Tata Martino to coach Lionel Messi again, this time with Inter Miami

Martino and Messi, together again

It turns out Lionel Messi doesn’t need an introduction to his Inter Miami coach.

Messi’s new club announced Wednesday that Gerardo “Tata” Martino would take charge at DRV PNK Stadium as the club’s new head coach.

The 60-year-old Argentine has made his return to MLS after an unhappy spell as Mexico’s manager, and will reunite with Messi — who he coached with both Barcelona and Argentina — once the legendary attacker arrives in July.

“I’m very excited to join a big club like Inter Miami and I know together we can accomplish many great things,” said Martino in a team press release. “The club has the necessary infrastructure to be a major competitor in the region and I believe that with everyone’s hard work and commitment we can get there.”

“We are very happy to be able to welcome Tata to Inter Miami. We feel he is a coach who matches our ambitions as a club and we’re optimistic about what we can accomplish together,” said Miami managing owner Jorge Mas. “Tata has coached at the highest levels and we believe that experience will be hugely beneficial to us as we aim to compete for titles here.”

Is reunion with Messi good news?

On one hand, bringing Martino back to MLS makes a lot of sense. With Atlanta United, Martino helped shepherd in a new era for the league. As the first-ever head coach for the club, Martino’s Five Stripes set a high bar in terms of high-intensity, attack-first soccer in the league, weaving patterns of play that were both effective and entertaining.

With Martino at the helm, Atlanta scored 70 goals in both 2017 and 2018, winning the 2018 MLS Cup and helping Josef Martínez (who won the Golden Boot in 2018) become a bona fide star.

On the other, Martino left Atlanta in a cloud after rumors of disagreements with the club’s decision-makers, and his next step was not a happy one. The Mexico men’s job is one of the most high-pressure positions in international soccer, and Martino spent three years enduring the endless demands of the press, fanbase, and federation without a lot of truly positive moments.

After struggling with both the U.S. and Canada in qualifying and elsewhere, Martino’s Mexico did not get out of the group stage at the 2022 World Cup. Moments after their third match ended, Martino told reporters that his contract had officially ended.

Martino’s history with Messi is a bit clouded by the pressure cooker environments with Barca and Argentina. At the Camp Nou, Martino was a surprise appointment after the late Tito Vilanova retired in 2013 while battling cancer. Martino, having only won the Spanish Super Cup, stepped down soon after Atlético Madrid sealed the 2013-14 La Liga title by holding Barca to a draw on the final day of the season.

Martino moved on to Argentina, but suffered more heartbreak with Messi. In both the 2015 and 2016 editions of the Copa América, they reached the final only to lose on penalties to unfancied Chile.

Tata Martino trudges toward Qatar with end of Mexico tenure coming soon

The Mexico manager appears to be counting down the days until he is no longer the Mexico manager

Tata Martino needs a hug.The Mexico manager just led his team to victory over Peru in a friendly when a moment he had hoped would come for quite some time finally arrived: A reporter asked him something about tactics.“I’ve been waiting four years for someone to ask me a question of that nature. I appreciate you. I’d come give you a hug.” Martino said before joking he should travel to Tijuana, where the reporter is based, to offer all his news conferences.Mexico has hardly embraced Martino, and the loveless marriage is hurtling rapidly toward the date when the parties finally split. Mexico doesn’t want Martino to keep coaching the men’s national team after this World Cup, and the Argentine doesn’t want to spend any more time than necessary leading El Tri.His glee at a reporter actually understanding two relatively basic fundamentals of his style of play (Utilizing two-way midfielders who want to help keep possession and prioritizing a No. 9 who is skilled at dropping to help build attacks rather than finish off plays) show just how weary Martino has become of the questions that typically come from the press corps. That’s not to say there haven’t been extremely tough but fair questions to ask about Mexico. While the team has lost just three of the 16 matches it has played in 2022, that number is padded by friendly matches against teams like Guatemala, Paraguay on a non-FIFA date, and last week’s win against Iraq.Even then, Mexico drew with Guatemala, labored to get past Honduras and El Salvador in the latter stages of World Cup qualification and has often put in flat, uninspiring showings.Fans will still support the team, and the manager still wants to lead his men to World Cup glory, or at least to the quarterfinals, where Mexico hasn’t been since hosting the tournament in 1986. But it feels increasingly unlikely he has the talent needed to achieve that historic breakthrough.Martino is sweating the fitness of Raúl Jiménez, undoubtedly Mexico’s best No. 9 in light of the continued exclusion of all-time leading scorer Javier “Chicharito” Hernández. Jiménez has been trying to work through a groin injury since early September, making the final squad but hardly looking to be at full strength.

Credit: Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

Jesús “Tecatito” Corona is missing out on the tournament because of a leg and ankle injury suffered in Sevilla training in August, meaning Mexico could be without two of its top three attackers when the ball rolls in the group opener against Poland next week. It’s an unwanted extra headache for Martino, who already has to deal with a group of center backs prone to individual errors and unseasoned outside backs.Even the way in which he’s choosing to confront the issue has frustrated fans and the press that speaks for many of them. Young forward Santi Giménez, who leads the Europa League with four goals for Feyenoord in 172 minutes and also has a pair of goals in league play, missed out on the roster with Jiménez, Rogelio Funes Mori and América forward Henry Martin occupying the forward places.Martino said the controversy always will be there when the distance between players is so narrow, but claimed Giménez wouldn’t even be in the frame were it not for the national team staff.“If there are two people responsible for bringing Santi into the discussion to be able to have a spot in the World Cup, one is him for everything he’s done, and the other is me because I brought him in when he wasn’t even a starter with Cruz Azul,” Martino said at Mexico’s pre-World Cup camp in Spain. “The reality is Santi is the Europa League’s top scorer but doesn’t have a lot of minutes, he’s played now and then.”

Credit: Kyle Terada-USA TODAY Sports

Whether or not that logic stands up to reason is somewhat beside the point. Martino cuts a frustrated figure, noting that he knows whatever decision he makes is going to generate controversy in the press. For a year after taking over the national team shortly after leading Atlanta United to an MLS Cup win, the pressure of the job didn’t get to Martino. Then came the first loss of his tenure, a shellacking from Argentina that was preceded by Mexico players being photographed enjoying brunch at an Italian restaurant/nightclub in New York City. The slog began there, a gradual trudge toward the end everyone is expecting in Qatar, whether it’s another last-16 defeat or a group-stage exit that would represent the worst finish by a Mexico team in recent memory. Since defeats to the United States in the Concacaf Nations League final and the Gold Cup final in the summer of 2021, the indications are that Martino is ready to move on to his next challenge, tired of wasting his breath explaining his desired style of play and finding the right Mexico players to actually pull it off.It doesn’t help that Mexico is struggling when it matters most, failing to win its last 10 matches against teams ranked in the top 30 of WeGlobalFootball’s propriety rankings. You can put that on Martino and the players, and you would be right. But the manager himself points out that so many of the issues he’s tried to overcome are imposed by the system. Many El Tri players stay in Liga MX rather than going to Europe because of the big money involved in Mexican soccer, which often stunts development. Club owners hold an outsized amount of power in the Mexican setup, often limiting what national team directors and coaches are able to implement.“It’s too bad we don’t look at how things can get better. It’s about the manager, the players, who he selected, who he didn’t pick,” Martino said in a fiery news conference after a 3-2 friendly loss to Colombia. “It’s not the debate Mexico needs to get better as a soccer nation.”Martino isn’t likely to stick around to see if Mexico settles on the right debate and can improve those issues. A return to Argentina, to MLS or even to Paraguay beckon as jobs that would be less frustrating but also where it would be easier to find success. But unless he can find a way to shock France (or Denmark) in the knockout round, fans and those leading Mexican soccer won’t think twice about kicking him to the curb rather than bringing it in for a cozy bear hug.
