Following the commitment of D.J. McClary, where does the Rutgers football recruiting class rank?

Rutgers football has a recruiting class that is doing well in the national rankings.

It was a flip-tastic Sunday for Rutgers football with the committment of linebacker D.J. McClary. The four-star linebacker continues a hot streak for the Scarlet Knights as they rise up the rankings in the Big Ten and nationally.

It is a huge pick-up for Rutgers as they flipped McClary from Penn State. McClary is the No. 145 recruit in the ESPN 300.

McClary joins a high-profile group of commits that includes offensive lineman [autotag]Jaelyne Matthews[/autotag] (No. 93 in the ESPN 300), defensive back [autotag]Tariq Hayer[/autotag] (No. 98 in the ESPN 300) and wide receiver [autotag]Michael Thomas III[/autotag] (No. 108 in the ESPN 300) .

Of note, Matthews, Thomas and McClary are all from New Jersey, underscoring the strides made in in-state recruiting by Rutgers and head coach [autotag]Greg Schiano[/autotag].

How is Rutgers doing in the national rankings and among the Big Ten?

The class could well improve.

Film Breakdown – Rutgers football recruited a talented safety in Tariq Hayer

Rutgers football recruited four-star safety Tariq Hayer in their 2025 recruiting class. Hayer adds major depth to the Rutgers’ defense.

On Sunday, the Scarlet Knights added a nice addition to their defense when four-star safety Tariq Hayer committed to Rutgers football.

According to ESPN 300, Hayer is a top-10 safety prospect with excellent ball skills. The future Scarlet Knight can cover wide receivers and tight ends in passing situations while providing run support in the rushing game. Hayer can run downhill and make strong tackles in the open field.

The 6-foot-1, 190-pound defensive back is quick on his feet, changing directions in minimal time. Hayer is a physical player in the secondary who can lower the blow to opposing ball carriers.

Hayer is now a part of a Rutgers recruiting class that is ranked top-15 nationally and now features six players ranked as four-star commits.

While attending St. John’s High School in Washington D.C., Hayer is a multi-sport athlete.  As a sophomore, Hayer ran track, placing 7th in the 100-meter dash and 9th in the 200-meter dash at the DCSAA outdoor championships. Also, he participated in the 4×100 and 4×200 relay teams that competed at New Balance Nationals in June of 2023. Owns showed off his speed, recording times of 6.67 in the 55, 7.13 in the 60, 11.17 in the 100, 22.70 in the 200, and 37.69 in the 300.

On the gridiron, the 2025 prospect looks confident in pass coverage. Hayer has experience playing cover-two defense, covering half the field in passing situations. Also, Hayer can play cover one, roaming the middle of the field.

Hayer’s commitment to the Scarlet Knights is key for Defensive Coordinator Joe Harasymiak, adding major depth to the Rutgers secondary. Look for Hayer to develop into a complete Power Five play when he reports to campus in 2025.

Jaelyne Matthews picks Rutgers football over Georgia, Miami and Tennessee

Jaelyne Matthews has committed to Rutgers football.

In the spring, four-star offensive lineman Jaelyne Matthews said he wanted to ‘shock the world’ with his college commitment. Well, Matthews did just that on Tuesday with his commitment to Rutgers football.

Matthews picked Rutgers over an announced final three of Georgia, Miami and Tennessee. Rutgers was not in his final three but they were the shocking pick.

A 6-foot-7, 337-pound offensive tackle at Toms River North (Toms River, New Jersey), Matthews gives Rutgers six players committed from New Jersey in the 2025 class. He is the highest-ranked verbal from New Jersey to Rutgers.

He is also now the highest-ranked commit in this class.

It goes without saying but this is a significant pick-up for Rutgers. Matthews is the No. 93 player in the nation according to ESPN. In the On3 Industry Rankings, he is a top-25 offensive tackle in the nation.

Matthews has been selected to play in the Under Armour All-America Game, a prestigious high school football all-star game. His commitment to Rutgers should be another boost for a class that is top-15 in the national recruiting rankings.

His commitment marks three straight days for Rutgers where they’ve landed a four-star. On Sunday, four-star safety [autotag]Tariq Hayer[/autotag] committed to Rutgers after an official visit. On Monday afternoon, four-star offensive lineman [autotag]Josh Blackston[/autotag] gave his commitment to Rutgers.

Matthews took an official visit to Rutgers in the last weekend of May. This past weekend, Matthews was on an official visit to Miami.

Rutgers was Matthews’ first offer, coming in for him following his freshman season.

Top 10? Rutgers football makes another big move up in the national recruiting rankings

Rutgers football now has one of the top recruiting classes in the nation.

Following two more commitments this weekend, Rutgers football officially has one of the top recruiting classes in the nation.

Now at 20 commits, the Rutgers recruiting class sits at No. 7 in the nation according to Rivals along with being one of the best in Big Ten football.

Rutgers landed three-star offensive lineman [autotag]Gerrick Gordon[/autotag] early on Sunday afternoon (offers from Duke, Georgia Tech, Louisville, Miami, Purdue, South Carolina, SMU, Tulane and West Virginia). On Sunday evening, four-star safety Tariq Hayer committed to Rutgers (offers from Auburn, Georgia Tech, Indiana, Louisville, Maryland, Notre Dame, Ole Miss, Penn State, South Carolina and Wisconsin).

ESPN ranks Hayer as the No. 98 player in the class of 2025 and a four-star recruit. He is now the highest-ranked commit in this class.

Both Gordon and Hayer made their commitments following official visits over the weekend.

This follows last week’s haul of 10 commits. There is balance and depth in this class as well some star power.

The class now has three players ranked as four-star recruits in linebacker Talibi Kaba, offensive lineman N’Kye Wynn and now the addition of Hayer on Sunday.

This is the third-best class among Big Ten classes as well sitting behind Ohio State (second in college football, No. 1 in the Big Ten) and USC (third in the nation and second in the Big Ten).

Per 247Sports, this is the No. 11 class in the nation.

New Jersey leads the way with five commits in the class followed by Florida (four) and Georgia (three) for Rutgers.

[lawrence-related id=38734,38736]

Now, this ranking likely won’t last too long for Rutgers fans. This class is one of the biggest in the nation, leading in large part to their rise in the ranking.

But it is a good sign for Rutgers that they are filling up early on the players they want. Given the offer list for many of their commits. Rutgers has done a good job of getting in early on the players that they want from their evaluations and securing a commitment.
