Saints among 5 teams without a first-round pick in 2023 NFL draft

The New Orleans Saints are among 5 teams without a first-round pick in the 2023 NFL draft. Which other teams could be missing out in April?

The New Orleans Saints are among five teams without a first-round pick in the upcoming 2023 NFL draft. Which other teams are going to be missing out in April? Between trades (some ill-advised, others savvy) and, well, to quote Arrested Development’s George Bluth Sr., “some light treason,” multiple franchises will be spectators during the first round of this year’s draft.

Misery loves company, right? Though we’re guessing at least two teams are happy with how things have turned out after making bold moves. Let’s break down how the Saints, Cleveland Browns, Los Angeles Rams, Miami Dolphins, and San Francisco 49ers wound up in their respective position, and which teams own their picks instead:

NBA has rescinded Philadelphia’s second-round pick in each of the 2023 and 2024 drafts because an investigation found that the 76ers engaged in free agency discussions involving two players (P.J. Tucker and Danuel House, Jr.) prior to date when such discussions were permitted. – 4:04 PM

The Bulls have stormed back to make this a game, but credit to Tobias Harris and PJ Tucker for making some big shots and giving Philly a 64-56 cushion at the half. Joel Embiid has 12 and 4 and Harris has 11. #Sixers9:10 PM

Rich Hoffman: One thing to watch from last night’s game: P.J. Tucker only got 20 minutes. Georges Niang, who was in a good rhythm, played the entire fourth. Doc Rivers: “With P.J., when we can get nights like that, we’ll take them.” Sixers will be cautious with Tucker’s minutes at times. -via Twitter @rich_hofmann / October 25, 2022
As the regular season approaches, House Jr. opened up on his role with the team and he discussed what he is expected to do out on the floor. “My role is just to be energy,” he told reporters in Cleveland. “Be the guy to make stuff happen. Make plays happen, make a shot, knock down a shot, get a rebound, pass the ball, set the play up, run the play, set the screen, whatever the team needs pretty much. I’m just here to give away myself. Like I said earlier, I’m not really worried about accolades. As long as we win, I feel like that’s my biggest accolade.” -via Sixers Wire / October 11, 2022

Stefan Bondy: This was weeks ago when I was making phone calls about this, so I don’t know how up to date this information is, but the league has been investigating and has been for a while. At least one member of the Knicks’ organization has had their cell phone confiscated. It could be more, but I know of at least one. I don’t know what the NBA has found. To me, it’s a big-time gray area. Are you going to tell a father that he can’t talk to his son about his future? If I were the Knicks, I would’ve had Brunson talk to the press and say something along those lines. I’ve heard in a worst-case scenario the Knicks will have to give up a draft pick should the league find that they did something egregious.

Stefan Bondy: My sense is the Knicks are going to give this a try. They’re going to let Brunson be the point guard and have Barrett on the wing with Randle as a power forward next season and give it a go before they try to trade anybody in that group. I know people talk about trading Julius Randle so that Obi Toppin gets more of an opportunity. I don’t think that’s going to happen, certainly right away. -via HoopsHype / September 15, 2022
Kidd, a triple-double threat every time he took the court during his 19-season NBA career, which included seven seasons with the Nets and one with the Knicks, took satisfaction in Brunson’s deal. “The biggest thing is I’m happy he got paid,’’ Kidd said on the “All the Smoke’’ podcast. “He helped us. I know [Mavericks owner Mark] Cuban doesn’t like this, but I love when I can get a player get paid.’’ -via New York Post / September 14, 2022

The league will look into the Rick …

The league will look into the Rick Brunson connection. It will try to decipher how much, if any, contact occurred before the Knicks could legally speak to Jalen Brunson or his representatives about a contract, and it will look into who made that contact. News about the Knicks and Brunson coming to an agreement became public before teams were officially allowed to speak to free agents.

The whole league knew the Knicks were …

The whole league knew the Knicks were about to pursue Jalen Brunson when the Knicks hired his dad, so suspicions arise. The league will search for proof of why the hire happened and what the organization’s motives were. The NBA could collect email or text correspondences between necessary parties. Other elements will come into question. What is Rick Brunson’s salary, for example? And how does it stack up against other assistants around the league? The Knicks hired Rick away from a high school coaching job in New Jersey. He resigned from his assistant gig in Minnesota in 2018 after allegations of improper conduct toward women in the workplace.

Fred Katz on potential Knicks’ tampering: Everyone assumes that the NBA’s go-to penalty for this is now just loss of a second-round pick, because that’s what happened in the Lonzo Ball sing-and-trade. And that’s what happened in the Kyle Lowry sign-and-trade. And they just go ‘second-round pick’. And I know for sure that is not their blanket policy. That’s just what they decided in those moments and if they find evidence of tampering that they believe to be particularly egregious, they are down to go with a harsher penalty. But they have to find the evidence. It can’t just be like, ‘This is what we believed happened’. It has to be like evidence you can present in a courtroom and actually prove your point. … I think it could be a first-round pick… but I wasn’t explicitly told it could be a first.

Jalen Brunson is not going to change. The Knicks know exactly what they’re getting. And exactly what their new point guard will provide every day, regardless of his play or circumstances. “To me, they’re getting a great point guard, a great leader, a great person. A person that can score the ball, can run the team, and then most of all they’re getting a person that’s consistent everyday,” God Shammgod, who worked with Brunson the past three seasons as the Mavericks’ player development coach, told The Post. “They’re getting a person that’s an everyday person. And in life, not just basketball, to me there’s nothing more important than an everyday person. Everyday his energy is going to be the same, everyday he’s going to come with the right attitude, with the right hard work, and it might seem simple to people, but that’s hard. In life, not just in basketball, that’s hard in life, to get a person you know you can count everyday to be the same. -via New York Post / July 25, 2022

Now, if a team waits until 6 p.m. on …

Now, if a team waits until 6 p.m. on June 30 to contact potential free agents, it’s crashing a party that’s already over. This makes the league’s current stance on this type of tampering hard to pin down. At the moment, I’d describe the policy as “just don’t embarrass us.” If you want to wrap up free agency on June 27, that’s fine, but keep it on the down-low, please. Don’t spike the ball in our face by announcing a complicated sign-and-trade in the first four minutes of free agency. (Or days before it, in the bizarre case of Bogdan Bogdanović.) Nonetheless, the league’s stance in all three areas still appears to be evolving. Despite well-intentioned rules written on paper, there remains too much haziness in practice.
