XFL Week 4 TV guide: Schedule, streams, point spreads

All you need to know about Week 4 in the XFL.

Through three weeks of the XFL season, only one undefeated team remains – and the 3-0 Houston Roughnecks will face their toughest test of the year so far as they travel to Dallas for a potential playoff preview against quarterback Landry Jones and the Renegades.

Roughnecks quarterback P.J. Walker leads all players in the MVP race with 10 passing touchdowns through three games, but the Renegades have been much improved since Jones returned to the starting lineup. Elsewhere in the league, the DC Defenders will try to rebound from a blowout loss against the 0-3 Tampa Bay Vipers, and the LA Wildcats will try to get back to .500 on the road in New York.

7 bold predictions for Week 4 of the XFL season

The Texas Tussle between Dallas and Houston is the feature attraction on the XFL schedule in Week 4.

The XFL heads into Week 4 with a highlight battle on tap between the Houston Roughnecks and Dallas Renegades in the Big D.

The Roughnecks will roll

Troy Taormina-USA TODAY Sports

Gonna go with P.J. Walker and Cam Phillips over Landry Jones and Bob Stoops. The Roughnecks have not been contained in the first three weeks and while Stoops may have some answers he won’t have enough to deal Houston its first defeat.

WATCH! Tampa Bay’s Dan Williams takes short pass to the house

The Tampa Bay Vipers were trailing the Houston Roughnecks in the third quarter Saturday when Taylor Cornelius hit Dan Williams with a short pass and the wide receiver from Jackson State did the rest, taking the ball to the end zone. TOO. STRONG. …

The Tampa Bay Vipers were trailing the Houston Roughnecks in the third quarter Saturday when Taylor Cornelius hit Dan Williams with a short pass and the wide receiver from Jackson State did the rest, taking the ball to the end zone.

After the scoring play, the celebration was interrupted.

Williams explained how important the score was to Diana Russini of ESPN/ABC.

Roughnecks player crashes team touchdown celebration, steals ball

Houston’s Marqueston Huff crashed Tampa Bay’s campfire celebration.

The Tampa Bay Vipers scored just 12 points through their first two XFL games, but in their first home game at Raymond James Stadium, the Vipers didn’t struggle to put points on the board in a tight game with the undefeated Houston Roughnecks.

The Vipers scored late in the second quarter to enter halftime tied 18-18, but the Roughnecks opened the second half with a touchdown drive to go up by eight. Late in the third, the Vipers answered. After converting a crucial 4th-and-4 near midfield, quarterback Taylor Cornelius hit receiver Dan Williams with a 20-yard touchdown pass, and the Vipers celebrated by gathering around the campfire in the endzone.

While the Vipers were sitting down and encircling the ball, Houstons’ Marqueston Huff jumped into the center of the group, stole the ball and walked out.

Huff put an exclamation point on his heist by sticking his tongue out at the camera.

XFL fans lost it over this questionable unnecessary roughness call

Did officials make the right call on this massive hit?

Through the first two weeks of the 2020 XFL regular season, we’ve seen referees across the league allow crunching hits that likely would draw flags in the NFL. In Saturday’s opener in Tampa Bay, though, the Roughnecks were assessed a costly penalty on what seemed to be a very well-timed hit.

On a 2nd-and-10 play, Vipers quarterback Quinton Flowers launched a pass down the sideline in the area of three Houston defenders, but running back De’Veon Smith made a great catch and held the ball through an immediate hit from safety Cody Brown.

Brown leveled Smith, who was a defenseless receiver at the time of contact, but replays showed that Brown led with his shoulder and appeared to make a legal hit. The penalty put the Vipers half the distance to the goal, and they scored a touchdown on the very next play with a 7-yard rush from Flowers.

Former NFL player Louis Riddick, along with plenty of XFL fans, couldn’t believe the call.

WATCH: P.J. Walker and Cam Phillips hook up for incredible 84-yard TD pas

P.J. Walker and Cam Phillips of the XFL Houston Roughnecks connected for their fifth TD of the season in the first quarter Saturday.

The most lethal combination in the XFL, P.J. Walker and Cam Phillips, connected again in the first quarter of the Houston Roughnecks’ game with the Tampa Bay Vipers on Saturday.

Walker, the Patrick Mahomes of the new league, appeared to be running on the play. However, as the QB got to the line and was about to be dragged down, he unleashed a pass that was tipped. It wound up in the hands of Phillips and 84 yards later he was in the end zone.

Walker and Phillips had connected for four touchdowns in the first two weeks. And the beat goes on for the combo.

To add a finishing touch, Walker found Sam Mobley for a three-point PAT that gave the Roughnecks a 9-3 lead.

It will be fascinating to see what NFL team makes a play for Walker, who was an Indianapolis Colts practice squad player.

Marc Trestman has had tough start as head coach in XFL

It’s not really a surprise that former Bears coach Marc Trestman’s Tampa Bay Vipers have come out stumbling in the 2020 XFL season.

Bears fans understand the frustration that comes with having Marc Trestman as your team’s head coach. So it doesn’t really come as a surprise that Trestman’s Tampa Bay Vipers have come out stumbling in the 2020 XFL season.

The Vipers are 0-2 and in firm control of last place in the East Division, where the DC Defenders, St. Louis Battlehawks and New York Guardians have all won a game this season.

To make matters worse, Trestman’s offense hasn’t scored a touchdown in eight quarters this season, and they’ve scored just 12 points between two games. Something that should have Bears fans thankful after the 2019 Bears averaged 17.5 points per game.

Trestman’s Vipers were blown out on the road 23-3 by the Guardians in Week 1, and things only got worse in Week 2, where they were destroyed 27-0 by the Defenders.

When the Bears signed Trestman as their head coach in 2013, he was highly regarded as a great offensive mind. Heck, he even led the Bears to the No. 2 scoring offense in 2013.

But it was all downhill from there.

Following that 2013 season, the Bears offense dropped to the No. 23 offense, and Trestman was fired after just two seasons.

It seems to be the same old story for Trestman coaching in the XFL, only minus the lone great offensive season.

Maybe Trestman should stick to coaching in Canada.

WATCH! Seattle Dragons’ Marcell Frazier makes incredible Pick-6

Seattle Dragons defensive end Marcell Frazier showed off some pretty good hands.

Marcell Frazier may be playing defense but the 6-foot-5, 256-pound defensive end from Missourie showed some great hands in the Seattle Dragons’ 17-9 victory over the Tampa Bay Vipers Saturday.

Frazier pilfered a pass at the Tampa Bay 1 and waltzed into the end zone for a touchdown in the second half. After a successful two-point try from the 5-yard line on a Brandon Silvers pass to Keenan Reynolds, the Dragons had a 14-9 lead with 5:31 left in the third quarter.

The XFL and the Dragons may be new to pro football, but the team showed it knows what to do after a Pick-6. They scored the 17 points in a row after falling behind by nine.

Seattle loves its football and that could never have been more obvious than in the crowd, which was rousing and totaled 29,172.

WATCH! Tampa Bay Vipers’ Tarvarus McFadden returns pick 78 yards for TD

Tavarus McFadden returned a pick 78 yards for a touchdown for the XFL Tampa Bay Vipers.

The Tampa Bay Vipers’ defense was on point for the first half Saturday in Seattle, allowing 41 yards. Then, the Vipers’ Tavarus McFadden made a huge play in the third quarter, picking off Brandon Silvers, getting up and returning it 78 yards to make it 9-0.

McFadden played college football at Florida State, and was signed by the San Francisco 49ers as an undrafted free agent in 2018. On Aug. 4, 2019, McFadden was signed by the Detroit Lions. He was waived/injured two days later and placed on injured reserve. He was released on Aug. 10.

“They don’t score, they don’t win,” McFadden told FOX Sports from the sidelines after the play.

Tampa Bay looked to be firing on all cylinders behind quarterback Aaron Murray to begin last weekend’s game against the New York Guardians. However, Murray’s interception in the end zone proved to be a sign of what would happen the rest of the game in a 23-3 loss. Murray was sacked three times and completed less than half of his passes. However, on the positive side, Tampa Bay completed 47 percent of its third-down conversions and had four trips into the red zone. It was three turnovers that proved to be a killer.

Seattle may have had more success on offense than Tampa Bay, but it still took a 31-19 loss to the DC Defenders. Quarterback Brandon Silvers went 21-for-40 with 217 yards passing and three touchdowns, but he did have two interceptions. Kenneth Farrow and Ja’Quan Gardner combined for 97 yards on 16 carries. It will be interesting to see if the two split time again on Saturday or if the coaches choose to give one of the running backs more snaps. Wide receiver Austin Proehl had five catches for 88 yards and two touchdowns, including a 57-yard catch-and-run.
