Former Vol Tamarion McDonald commits to Ole Miss.

Former Tennessee defensive back Tamarion McDonald committed to Ole Miss on Saturday.

The 6-foot-2, 209-pound McDonald appeared in 42 games for the Vols from 2020-23. He recorded 116 tackles, 8.5 tackles for a loss, one sack, four interceptions, 16 pass deflections and one fumble recovery.

McDonald came to Tennessee from Whitehaven High School in Memphis, Tennessee.

He will play for Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin.

Kiffin served as Tennessee’s head coach in 2009, guiding the Vols to a 7-6 (4-4 SEC) record. He did not return for a second season, resigning as the Vols’ head coach on Jan. 12, 2010 and becoming head coach at USC.

Student-athletes can enter the NCAA transfer portal from Dec. 2 until Jan. 2, 2024. Players can also enter the NCAA transfer portal from April 15-30, 2024.

The Whitehaven trio reunited at Neyland Stadium on Saturday.

Redshirt junior defensive lineman Bryson Eason and senior defensive back Tamarion McDonald of Tennessee defeated junior linebacker Martavius French of UTSA, 45-14, in Week 4. The trio signed with Tennessee in the 2020 recruiting class from Whitehaven High School in Memphis, Tennessee.

McDonald recorded seven tackles, two tackles for a loss, one sack and one interception, while Eason totaled three tackles and 0.5 tackles for a loss for the Vols against UTSA.

French totaled two tackles and one quarterback hurry for UTSA. He entered the NCAA transfer portal in April 2021. French transferred from Tennessee in May 2021 to Hutchinson Community College.

Tennessee football’s highest-graded returning defensive players in 2023

A look Tennessee football’s highest-graded returning defensive players ahead of the 2023 season.

The 2023 season will be Tennessee’s third under head coach Josh Heupel. Heupel has compiled an 18-8 (10-6 SEC) record with the Vols.

The Vols will kick off its 2023 season on Sept. 2 against Virginia at Nissan Stadium in Nashville, Tennessee.

As the 2023 season approaches, Vols Wire looks at the highest-graded returning defensive players for Tennessee.

All grades were gathered using the Pro Football Focus (PFF) database and grading system. Data compiled represents a player’s overall offensive grade from the 2022 season, including postseason games.

Student-athletes who played 20 percent of the minimum number of snaps in 2022 were included.

Below are Tennessee’s top-10 highest-graded returning defensive players entering the 2023 season.

KNOXVILLE — Tennessee held a scrimmage Sunday night ahead of its SEC Week 4 contest against Kentucky.

The scrimmage was intended for student-athletes to receive reps who are not playing a huge role during the early part of the season.

Jeremy Pruitt mentioned that freshman defensive back Tamarion McDonald stood out during the scrimmage.

“Tamarion, last night was the first time that he’s really had any contact during fall camp, and I thought he was one of the bright spots of the scrimmage last night, so that was good to see,” Pruitt said Monday.

Following Tennessee’s third practice of fall training camp, Pruitt announced that McDonald would redshirt during the 2020 season due to having underwent shoulder surgery.

The 6-foot-2, 195-pound freshman is from Whitehaven High School in Memphis, Tennessee. McDonald also played linebacker at Whitehaven.

Following the Vols’ third practice of fall training camp, Tennessee head coach Jeremy Pruitt announced that McDonald will redshirt during the 2020 season.

Pruitt mentioned that the 6-foot-2, 195-pound freshman has underwent shoulder surgery.

McDonald played at Whitehaven High School in Memphis, Tennessee. He helped lead Whitehaven to the state semifinals last season and the state championship game in 2018.

The third and final signee from the Whitehaven trio out of Whitehaven High School in Memphis, Tamarion McDonald is a three-star outside linebacker prospect standing at 6-foot-1, 218-pounds.

Although he is listed as an outside linebacker, Whitehaven is known for moving players around to play several positions on defense, and McDonald is no exception. He has experience playing at all four spots on the second level of the defense. McDonald played offense in his time at Whitehaven, as well.

McDonald had offers from schools such as Mississippi State, Arkansas, Ole Miss and LSU.

MEMPHIS — 2020 linebacker Tamarion McDonald has officially ended his college recruiting process.

McDonald committed to the Vols on Oct. 22. The 6-foot-2, 220-pound linebacker is from Whitehaven High School in Memphis, Tenn.

McDonald is one of three Tennessee commits in the Vols’ 2020 class.

The commitments are a trio of linebackers: Bryson Eason (6-foot-2, 250-pounds), Martavius French (6-foot-2, 240-pounds) and Tamarion McDonald (6-foot-2, 220-pounds).

Jeremy Pruitt and the University of Tennessee football program received three commitments on Oct. 22 from Whitehaven High School in Memphis, Tenn.

The commitments are a trio of linebackers: Bryson Eason (6-foot-2, 250-pounds), Martavius French (6-foot-2, 240-pounds) and Tamarion McDonald (6-foot-2, 220-pounds).

Pruitt joined UT defensive coordinator Derrick Ansley and running backs coach David Johnson for a visit with the trio of commits Dec. 3.
