5 takeaways from Colts’ 31-3 win over the Texans

Takeaways from the Colts’ 31-3 win over the Texans in Week 6.

The Indianapolis Colts (2-4) responded well following their gut-wrenching collapse with a dominating win over the Houston Texans (1-5).

Once Carson Wentz connected with Parris Campbell on a 51-yard touchdown on the offense’s second drive of the game, they took control of the matchup and never let up. All three phases of the game showed up for the team. The offense was explosive all afternoon, T.Y. Hilton reminded everyone it is spooky season with his 52-yard catch, and Jonathan Taylor dominated the Texans in the second half to close it out.

The defense wasn’t perfect, they still struggled to get consistent pressure and allowed Davis Mills to make easy completions. But, they showed up when they needed to. Darius Leonard forced two turnovers, got his hands on for an interception and peanut punched a ball out of David Johnson’s hands for the fumble recovery by Khari Willis.

Isaiah Rodgers’ pick gave the defense their third turnover of the game. The new kicker, Michael Badgley was perfect, he made all five attempts and his longest was a 41-yard field goal. Rigoberto Sanchez deserves his credit too, he pinned Houston inside the 20-yard line twice, which one was at the five-yard line, and had a long of 50 yards.

The good news is that there is a lot of positive things to take away from the win, here are the top five:

T.Y. Hilton leads Colts receivers in debut

The Ghost returned and led the Colts WR corps with 80 yards.

Indianapolis Colts wide receiver T.Y. Hilton made his season debut against a team he constantly dominates. On Sunday, the Ghost made his return in a big way by leading the receiving corps in the 31-3 win over the Houston Texans.

Hilton saw four targets on the day, hauling in all four for 80 yards. The Colts only threw the ball a total of 20 times in the blowout win, which makes sense given the type of second half that Jonathan Taylor had.

Hilton missed the first five games of the season due to a neck injury that caused him to lose feeling on his entire left side. However, he returned to the roster triumphantly against a team he knows all too well.

It will be interesting to see how the dynamic shifts between Hilton and Michael Pittman Jr., who has filled in admirably as the WR1 in the offense.

Regardless, it was nice to see Hilton back on the field and being pretty involved in the passing game.

5 takeaways from the Texans’ blowout 31-3 loss to the Colts

The Houston Texans came out flat against the Indianapolis Colts. Here are five takeaways from the 31-3 loss in Week 6.

HOUSTON — The Houston Texans dropped their fifth consecutive game in a 31-3 loss to the Indianapolis Colts, Sunday afternoon, at Lucas Oil Stadium.

Unlike their play against the New England Patriots the previous week, the Texans never had a chance to steal a victory amid a wire-to-wire loss to the Colts. Indianapolis’ running back Jonathan Taylor rushed for a season-best 145 yards on 14 carries, while Carson Wentz threw for 223 yards and two touchdowns in their rout of the Texans.

As the Texans fall to 1-5 on the season, here are five takeaways from Houston’s loss to their AFC South counterparts, who now take firm command of second place at 2-4.

Twitter reacts to the Texans getting crushed 31-3 by the Colts

The Indianapolis Colts took the Houston Texans to the woodshed 31-3 on the gridiron, and Twitter took the Texans took task on social media.

The Houston Texans fell to 1-5 on the season in spectacular fashion as the Indianapolis Colts demolished them 31-3 Sunday afternoon at Lucas Oil Stadium.

For rookie quarterback Davis Mills, he has yet to pick up his first win of his career despite trying in the last four starts. Mills didn’t look as great as he did in Week 5 against the New England Patriots as he threw two interceptions and not a single touchdown.

Twitter couldn’t help but notice the spiral the Texans have undergone since Tyrod Taylor suffered his hamstring injury in Week 2. Here are the best reactions from Twitter during the loss.

Colts rout Texans, 31-3, in much-needed blowout win

Recapping the Colts’ 31-3 blowout win over the Texans in Week 6.

The Indianapolis Colts (2-4) defeated the Houston Texans (1-5) in a blowout fashion, 31-3, on Sunday at Lucas Oil Stadium.

As heavy favorites in this game, the Colts dominated on both sides of the ball for the entire game. It took a while for the run game to get going, but the defense had no issues with the conservative Texans offense.

Here is the game recap from the Week 6 win over the Texans:

Texans vs. Colts third quarter recap: RB Jonathan Taylor pounds defense, 24-3

The Houston Texans fell further behind thanks to big plays from Indianapolis Colts RB Jonathan Taylor.

Texans vs. Colts first quarter recap

Texans vs. Colts second quarter recap

Colts 6th drive (3 plays, 0 yards, 2:16) — The Texans defense shows up and turns Indianapolis three-and-out. The pass rush was starting to affect QB Carson Wentz, including another DE Jonathan Greenard sack on third-and-7.

Texans 6th drive (1 play, 0 yards, 0:08) — QB Davis Mills throws an interception over the middle looking for WR Nico Collins. LB Darius Leonard picks off the rookie.

Colts 7th drive (2 plays, 28 yards, 0:46) — After a run that went nowhere, Wentz threw a 28-yard touchdown to pass to TE Mo Alie-Cox. Colts, 17-3

Texans 7th drive (6 plays, 28 yards, 2:57) — The Texans aren’t able to effectively respond to the Colts’ scoring drive. Houston had to punt on a fourth-and-2 from their own 45-yard line.

Colts 8th drive (4 plays, 88 yards, 2:16) — RB Jonathan Taylor finally comes alive with an 83-yard run to get inside the Texans’ 10-yard line. Taylor finished off the drive with a 4-yard touchdown. Colts, 24-3

Texans 8th drive () — This drive, albeit a good one that is more than likely going to end in points, illustrates what’s wrong with the Texans. They just don’t have any big plays to move the chains. All credit to Mills leading the Texans on a 12-play drive to this point that gets to the edge of the Colts’ red zone. But it took almost seven minutes to get here. Who even knows if the drive actually ends in points, given coach David Culley’s penchant for going for it?

Texans vs. Colts second quarter recap: Indianapolis extends lead 10-3

The Houston Texans at least won’t get shutout as they trail the Indianapolis Colts 10-3.

Colts 3rd drive (6 plays, 59 yards, 1:56) — WR T.Y. Hilton came alive with a 52-yard catch that got Indianapolis into the plus side of the field. Houston limited the drive to just a field goal, but K Michael Badgley’s 41-yard attempt pushed Indianapolis ahead by 10. Colts, 10-0

Texans 4th drive (13 plays, 62 yards, 6:43) — The Texans mounted their longest drive of the game, and it all came down to a third-and-5 from the Colts’ 13-yard line. QB Davis Mills was looking for TE Jordan Akins, and S Khari Willis put his hands on the ball but dropped the interception. Houston settled for a K Ka’imi Fairbairn field goal. Collins was big again as he had two catches for 23 yards. Mills also helped Houston convert 2-3 on third downs. Colts, 10-3

Colts 4th drive (7 plays, 37 yards, 4:27) — On a third-and-9 from the Texans’ 45-yard line, QB Carson Wentz hits TE Mo Alie-Cox right in the hands with room to convert. However, he drops the ball and the Colts have to punt. P Rigoberto Sanchez backs Houston up at their own 5-yard line.

Texans 5th drive (8 plays, 41 yards, 1:45) — The Texans were really in between a rock and a hard place with 1:49 to go and backed up to their own 5-yard line. Houston did have three timeouts, and picked up the first down. The only “success” of the drive is Houston was able to prevent the Colts from picking up points before halftime.

Colts 5th drive (1 play, -1 yard, 0:04) — Wentz takes a knee to get to halftime.

Texans 1st drive (3 plays, 9 yards, 1:32) — Houston gets a false start to make it first-and-15, which effectively doomed the drive to a three-and-out.

Colts 1st drive (4 plays, 15 yards, 1:56) — WR T.Y. Hilton got an easy first down. On the ensuing play, the Texans sacked QB Carson Wentz, which doomed their drive. DE Jonathan Greenard got the sack on Wentz.

Texans 2nd drive (11 plays, 44 yards, 6:22) — What can only be described as the quintessential 2021 Texans drive: there were holding penalties, big plays, the fear of a turnover, and a third-down sack at midfield to guarantee the drive ended with zero points. P Cam Johnston was able to pin the Colts at their own 8-yard line. Rookie WR Nico Collins also had a 14-yard catch on the drive, his first since coming off injured reserve.

Colts 2nd drive (7 plays, 92 yards, 3:18) — Indianapolis put together a solid drive.
