When you’re on a winning streak, more often than not you are also getting some lucky breaks to help you along.
The St. Louis Cardinals have officially hit a franchise record with 15 straight wins in a row, and they have this incredibly chaotic and quite lucky double play to thank for that. During Saturday’s game against the Chicago Cubs, the Cardinals’ win streak was hanging in the balance with one out and men on first and third in the bottom of the eighth.
Holding onto a slim 5-4 lead, St. Louis pitcher T.J. McFarland was able to get Rafael Ortega to hit a ground ball right to Paul Goldschmidt to start out the double play. Instead of stepping back to first and letting a run score, Goldschmidt fired home to catch David Bote in a run down.
And from there, in a chase sequence you could set The Benny Hill Show theme to, the Cardinals went around the field in a team-wide double play to get both outs and get out of the jam.

I have never seen a double play as chaotic as that one. Seriously, what a mess! And yet, it worked out perfectly for the Cardinals to get out of the inning. The poor scorekeepers at MLB.com, on the other hand, have to be exhausted after writing this one out in their play-by-play.
Thanks to the all around team effort from the Cardinals, St. Louis was able to tack on insurance runs in the ninth inning before closing it out for the 8-5 win. What an effort to continue on the win streak!
