Notre Dame had every right to feel good about itself after Sunday’s 72-70 victory over Syracuse. The Irish (11-17, 6-10) had to get a little bit of offense down the stretch and then crack down on defense to defeat the Orange (15-12, 9-7), but they …
Notre Dame had every right to feel good about itself after Sunday’s 72-70 victory over Syracuse. The Irish (11-17, 6-10) had to get a little bit of offense down the stretch and then crack down on defense to defeat the Orange (15-12, 9-7), but they made it work. This was a positive in a season in which little has gone right.
Mikki Vaughn scored the final two of her career-high 21 points on two free throws to break a 70-all tie with 1:02 left. Syracuse had the ball at half court out of a timeout with 10.1 seconds left. Two missed shot attempts later, the Irish secured the victory. Credit goes to the defense for helping that happen.
Destinee Walker scored 16 points, tied her career high of six assists and recorded three steals. Katlyn Gilbert also dished out six assists and had three steals to go with 12 points. Sam Brunelle finished one rebound shy of a double-double while scoring 15 for the afternoon.
Notre Dame hasn’t won two in a row since beating Alabama A&M on Dec. 29 and Syracuse on Jan. 4. After defeating Wake Forest on Wednesday, the Irish (12-8, 3-6) will try to start a new winning streak against Georgia Tech (10-11, 4-6) on Saturday. It …
Notre Dame hasn’t won two in a row since beating Alabama A&M on Dec. 29 and Syracuse on Jan. 4. After defeating Wake Forest on Wednesday, the Irish (12-8, 3-6) will try to start a new winning streak against Georgia Tech (10-11, 4-6) on Saturday. It will be the middle of a three-game homestand for the Irish.
This will be the first game in which T.J. Gibbs enters action as the Irish’s all-time leading scorer in regular-season ACC games. It took him 61 games to score 761 points, 11 games fewer than it took Steve Vasturia, the previous record-holder, to reach his mark of 739.
While Notre Dame will look to improve its ACC record Saturday, it also will be a day for celebration. Kelly Tripucka, who scored 1,719 points over his Irish career, will be inducted into the Purcell Pavilion Ring of Honor at halftime. Tripucka will be the ninth person to receive the highest honor the program can bestow upon a former student-athlete or coach.
Having covered both the NBA and college basketball during my career I can say firsthand Red Panda’s act is something to behold and was often times more entertaining than some of the NBA contests I covered.
Do you ever remember getting excited to see one of your favorite athletes in person but that athlete having an incredibly forgetable performance?
What happened last night at Purcell Pavilion wasn’t far off for a legendary act that has run halftime shows across the NBA and college basketball for years.
If you’re not already familiar with “Red Panda” then take a couple of minutes and enjoy the act.

Who possibly wouldn’t enjoy an act that features a young lady on a unicycle kicking bowls on top of her head?
Magic.

It wasn’t the first time it’s happened to her but Wednesday night our hero (Red Panda) didn’t have the best go at halftime of Notre Dame vs. Syracuse at Purcell Pavilion.
BREAKING: Red Panda just dropped multiple bowls at #NotreDame vs. Syracuse.
REPEAT: Multiple bowls were dropped.

And not long after this tweet, video of the incredibly rare footage emerged – the good news is that Red Panda was able to gather herself after the rough start and finish strong.

Now if that’s not the sign of a real champion I really don’t know what is.

Already having defeated Syracuse on its home court earlier this month, Notre Dame was given a chance to sweep the season series in South Bend on Wednesday. Instead, they’ll have to figure out how to right the ship quickly after an 84-82 loss.
This game featured 16 lead changes between two ACC teams trying to either bolster their NCAA tournament resume or simply get back in the picture. After the Irish (11-7, 2-5) took a 69-68 lead, they watched the Orange (12-7, 5-3) go on a 12-4 run that put the game out of reach. Notre Dame whittled the deficit from eight to two, but by then, it was too late.
The biggest consolation for the Irish was John Mooney’s program-record 12th straight double-double, which consisted of 21 points and a game-high 13 rebounds. Dane Goodwin came off the bench to score 15 points, T.J. Gibbs scored 13, and Nate Laszewski poured in 11 for the second unit.
More than half of the Irish’s field-goal attempts (68) came from beyond 3-point range (36). Thirteen of those 3s went in.

Notre Dame (11-6, 2-4) will return after a week-long absence from the hardwood on Wednesday when it welcomes Syracuse (11-7, 4-3) to South Bend. The Irish, already having beaten the Orange at the Carrier Dome on Jan. 4, will try to sweep the season series. They’ll need to in order to have some momentum ahead Saturday’s road game against No. 5 Florida State.
As tough as it’s been for the Irish during ACC play, the schedule hasn’t done them any favors. Only they and Georgia Tech have had to play five of their first eight conference games on the road. Then again, they’ve lost both ACC contests they’ve played at Purcell Pavilion this season, so this is a game they desperately need.
John Mooney has had a historic season, reaching one milestone and record after another. A double-double against Syracuse would be his 12th straight, and it would give him the Notre Dame record for the longest such streak, breaking a tie with Luke Harangody, who has stood at the top since the 2008-09 season.
With reigning ACC Men’s Basketball Player of the Week John Mooney in tow, Notre Dame (10-4, 1-2) will play the back end of two consecutive road games Wednesday at NC State (10-4, 1-2). The Irish have had to get familiar with not playing conference …
With reigning ACC Men’s Basketball Player of the Week John Mooney in tow, Notre Dame (10-4, 1-2) will play the back end of two consecutive road games Wednesday at NC State (10-4, 1-2). The Irish have had to get familiar with not playing conference games at Purcell Pavilion as four of their first six ACC games are being played away from home.
The Irish have held up their reputation as being one of the smartest teams in the nation as they have fewer fouls (11.6) and turnovers (9.6) a game than anyone else. They also have the fewest total turnovers (134) and the top assist-to-turnover ratio (1.96). That makes them the only team to lead the country in four major statistical categories.
Lost in the Mooney love is a quieter productive player in Prentiss Hubb. In Saturday’s win over Syracuse, Hubb became the fifth-fast player in Notre Dame history to reach 200 assists for his career by dishing out a career-high 11. He also made a key 3-pointer and two clutch free throws as the Irish tried to come back and then hold on against the Orange.

Notre Dame revolves around the double-double machine that is John Mooney, and for the second time this season, the ACC revolves around him. The senior forward was named the conference’s Men’s Basketball Player of the Week for games played during the week of Dec. 30. He also won for games played the week of Nov. 11, making him the first conference player this season to win the honor twice.
Mooney had a game to remember in Saturday’s thrilling come-from-behind win over Syracuse, tying his career high of 28 points and grabbing 14 rebounds. It was the second time this season he scored at least 25 points and at least 10 boards. His biggest moment of game came with 36 seconds left, when his offensive rebound and putback gave Notre Dame the lead for good. He shot 11 for 21 from the field over 32 minutes.
Duke forward Matthew Hurt was named the ACC Freshman of the Week, the second Blue Devil to earn the honor this season after Vernon Carey Jr., who has won it three times.
Notre Dame avoided an 0-3 start in ACC play with an 88-87 win at Syracuse on Saturday.
Notre Dame avoided an 0-3 ACC start by winning their second straight game at the Carrier Dome over Syracuse, 88-87.
The Fighting Irish started strong, stumbled through some of the middle part before rallying very late to walk out victorious.
