Sydney McLaughlin sets another world record in the 400m hurdles at the world championships

Sydney McLaughlin continues to one-up herself.

It’s been a memorable month of July for the U.S. at the World Athletics Championships.

Last week, Allyson Felix earned a bronze medal in her final world championships race. This week, Sydney McLaughlin set a world record in the 400 hurdles.

Sydney McLaughlin and a world record? You’ve heard this before. Actually, you’ve heard it a number of times over the past year.

Her 50.68 finish on Friday broke her previous world record of 51.41 set at the 2022 U.S. Championships, which had broken her record of 51.46 at the Tokyo Olympics, and 51.90 at the 2021 U.S. Olympic Trials.

And with Friday’s record-setting run, McLaughlin made it look easy. Watch as she ran away from the field without a single competitor even close.

McLaughlin’s recent string of record-breaking performances comes on the heels of a 400m record that Yuliya Penchonkina (Russia) had stood for 16 years.

At just 22 years of age, it’s wild to think of how many more times McLaughlin could outdo herself in the years to come.

Sydney McLaughlin chased down Dalilah Muhammad to win 400m hurdles and set new world record

An incredible race between two now-Olympic champions.

The women’s 400-meter hurdles — one of the most anticipated track and field showdowns at the Tokyo Olympics — did not disappoint Wednesday morning at the Games (and Tuesday night in the U.S.).

With two Americans at the top of their sport, it was the Sydney McLaughlin and Dalilah Muhammad show with McLaughlin entering the race as the world record holder while Muhammad was the defending Olympic champion. And somehow, these two make this very challenging event look easy.

The 400-meter hurdles final came down to the two of them, as 21-year-old McLaughlin chased down 31-year-old Muhammad to break her own world record and win her first Olympic gold medal with a thrilling near-photo finish. And McLaughlin didn’t just break her world record; she shattered it with a time of 51.46, and Muhammad won silver at 51.58.

Just an incredible race between two now-Olympic champions:

The American pair now have four combined world records, with Muhammad previously breaking it twice in 2019 and McLaughlin lowering it to 51.90 at U.S. Olympic Trials in June.

The Netherlands’ Femke Bol won bronze at 52.03, and the third American in the final, Anna Cockrell, finished seventh but was disqualified because of a lane infraction.

Sydney McLaughlin and Dalilah Muhammad made their 400-meter hurdles heats look so easy

Sydney McLaughlin and Dalilah Muhammad were cruising.

Track stars Sydney McLaughlin and Dalilah Muhammad put on a show Saturday morning at the Tokyo Olympics (Friday night in the U.S.). And in fact, they made the 400-meter hurdles look easy — and that event is definitely anything but.

But after the five opening heats of the event, Team USA’s medal favorites reminded fans why the semifinals and final of this event are must-see events. (The top-4 finishers in each heat and the next four fastest athletes advanced to the semifinals.)

McLaughlin — who broke Muhammad’s world record in June at the U.S. Olympic Trials and lowered it to 51.90 — easily won the third heat of the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 54.65. And then Muhammad — who won gold in the event at the 2016 Rio Games — comfortably won the fifth heat at 53.97.

Look how far ahead McLaughlin and Muhammad are in their respective heats, and neither of them are going at full speed.

And in addition to the pair, Team USA teammate Anna Cockrell finished third in her heat, so all three American women advanced to the semifinals.

The three semifinals for the women’s 400-meter hurdles are set for Monday night in Tokyo (Monday morning in the U.S.).

Atlanta Falcons running back Todd Gurley was among the athletes that appeared in a new Gatorade commercial that debuted last month with the return of professional sports around the world and across the United States.

Gurley starred alongside New Orleans Pelicans rookie Zion Williamson, Washington Mystics forward Elena Delle Donne, Philadelphia Phillies outfielder Bryce Harper and Olympic track and field athlete Sydney McLaughlin in the commercial.

The athletes in the 30-second spot are depicted as being excited to just be playing anything again after sports shuttered for several months due to the coronavirus pandemic. Gurley tried his hand at baseball, lacrosse and even soccer in the ad.

Gurley offered some behind-the-scenes details Friday on “The Dan Patrick Show” on how that commercial was shot as it has been running daily during live sporting events.

“We all did it at our house,” Gurley said. “So, I did it at my house in California. I guess Bryce did his maybe in Florida or Philly and then Zion did his in New Orleans. It was kinda like a Zoom shoot.”

The commercial was the first for Williamson, who signed on to endorse the sports drink prior to the start of his rookie season. The rest of the athletes in the ad have been with the company for some time now and all came together to create a fun commercial with sports back front and center.
