Fan recreates The Super Mario Movie trailer with N64 graphics

The Nintendo 64 goes Hollywood.

There’s no denying that The Super Mario Bros. Movie is looking pretty good, but it would (obviously) be so much better with Nintendo 64 visuals — which now exists, thanks to one passionate fan.

Youtube animator King Bob brought the dream to life by giving The Super Mario Bros. Movie‘s second trailer an N64 makeover — by taking models from Super Mario 64 and syncing them up perfectly with scenes from the film. Seriously, it’s practically shot-for-shot all the way through! It works surprisingly well, considering these assets are more than 20 years old by now.

Check out the video for yourself below.

You’ve got to love that shot of Browser plucking Luigi’s 2D mustache — Jack Black’s take on our favorite spikey turtle bad boy is simply irresistible, no matter the polygon count. Chris Pratt’s spin on the titular plumber is still kind of iffy. That half-hearted ‘let’s a-go’ isn’t any better, even with old-school aesthetics.

At any rate, The Super Mario Bros. Movie arrives in theaters on April 7, 2023. Other big names attached to the project include Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Seth Rogan as Donkey Kong, Charlie Day as Luigi, and Keegan-Michael Key as Toad.

The Super Mario Movie’s second trailer shows off Donkey Kong and Princess Peach

Even Rainbow Road made an appearance!

Nintendo released The Super Mario Bros. Movie‘s second trailer on Tuesday, giving fans a first-ever look at several iconic characters and locations.

During November 2022’s edition of Nintendo Direct, animation studio Illumination gave us another glance at The Super Mario Bros. Movie. Unlike the first trailer, you can hear Anya Taylor-Joy’s take on Princess Peach and a few grunts from Seth Rogan’s portrayal of Donkey Kong. Chris Pratt shouts a couple of iconic Mario lines like “wahoo” and “let’s-a go,” — which might win over the doubters.

Check out the trailer for yourself below! There are plenty of tiny references from across Mario’s nearly 40-year history.

The most recognizable callbacks would be Mario wearing a tanooki suit and everyone go-karting around on Rainbow Road. Nintendo and Illumination appear to be going all-in on the nostalgia angle. Still not much in the way of plot details, but hey — it’s a children’s film about plumbers squashing goombas.

There were a couple more lines from Jack Black’s Bowser too, which still has fans going wild. Overall, the casting seems good, at least from these quick teasers.

We’ll find out if it all comes together well when The Super Mario Bros. Movie premieres in theaters on April 7, 2023.

Super Mario Movie’s second trailer lands this week

We’ll almost certainly hear more of Chris Pratt’s take on the famous plumber.

Nintendo announced Monday that the second Super Mario Bros. Movie trailer is coming out later this week, giving fans another chance to warm up to Chris Pratt’s spin on the titular plumber.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie‘s next trailer premieres on Wednesday, Nov. 29, 2022, at 2:00 P.M. PDT // 5:00 P.M. EDT // 10:00 P.M. GMT as part of the latest Nintendo Direct. It’ll be available on Nintendo’s official YouTube channel here. The company also stated that there will be no video game-related announcements during this broadcast.

No other details regarding the teaser are available, but Nintendo gave us a brand-new movie poster. It depicts what we can safely assume is Princess Peach’s castle — the Super Mario 64 vibes are strong.

The first Super Mario Bros. Movie trailer went over reasonably well with most series diehards. Jack Black’s performance as Bowser won people over fast, though the reception wasn’t so glowing for Pratt. There’s been a lot of trepidation regarding Pratt’s casting as Mario. However, Illumination CEO and the film’s producer Chris Meledandri insisted Pratt gave “a strong performance” during every recording session.

We’ve yet to hear Keegan-Michael Key, Anya Taylor-Joy, or Charlie Day as Toad, Princess Peach, and Luigi, respectively – though that could change relatively soon.

Super Mario fans are loving Jack Black’s Bowser

Jack Black is bringing the Koopa King to life in a brilliant way.

So the first Super Mario Bros. Movie trailer came out last week, and above all else — everyone loves Jack Black’s take on Bowser.

Not that there was ever any doubt. Black is a natural showman who brings 110 percent to every role. It’s just, you know, the first big-screen Super Mario adaptation didn’t go over well with anyone. So there’s already loads of nervous energy floating around the fandom, particularly regarding Chris Pratt’s Mario – the jury is still out on that one.

However, fans went absolutely gaga for Jack Black when the new trailer went live. Below, we’ve put together a list of some of the best reactions from Twitter.

Nintendo suddenly delays the new Super Mario movie until April 2023

Shigeru Miyamoto let fans know that the film isn’t coming out this year anymore.

Well, everyone’s favorite plumber won’t be returning to the big screen in 2022.

On Monday, Nintendo announced that the forthcoming Super Mario Bros. movie won’t release until April 7, 2022.

“This is Miyamoto. After consulting with Chris-san, my partner at Illumination on the Super Mario Bros. film, we decided to move the global release to Spring 2023–April 28 in Japan and April 7 in North America,” Miyamoto said on Twitter. “My deepest apologies but I promise it will be well worth the wait.”

Super Mario RPG director would ‘love’ to make a sequel

Chihiro Fujioka would make Super Mario RPG 2 his final game.

Way back in 1996, Super Mario RPG took the video game world by storm, and director Chihiro Fujioka still wants to make a sequel.

During an interview with YouTube channel MinnMax, Fujioka had no reservations about expressing his desire to do a follow-up to the Super Nintendo classic.

“Yeah, I would absolutely love to make one,” Fujioka said. “In my career, I’ve been involved in a lot of games, and you know, I would really like my final one to be another Mario RPG game, if possible. I think Mario & Luigi is cool, but I would like to go back and create a Mario RPG where you’re only controlling Mario.”

Later in the interview, Fujioka even claims he has story ideas for a hypothetical Mario RPG 2, but he won’t divulge those details.

Watch the entire talk with Fujioka for yourself below.

Classic RPGs resurfacing after being away for decades are all the rage these days. Some recent examples are the Final Fantasy 6 pixel remaster and Chrono Cross: Radical Dreamers Edition, both of which are Square Enix titles much like Super Mario RPG. Not saying this necessarily means anything, but hey: Nintendo and Square Enix — let Fujioka do the thing. It would automatically shoot-up our most anticipated RPGs list fast.
