USA TODAY Sports/NFCA High School Super 25 softball rankings: Week 9

Lions continue to roar atop USA TODAY Sports/NFCA High School Super 25.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Lake Creek and Oaks Christian — the two teams with Lion mascots atop the USA TODAY Sports/NFCA High School Super 25 — kept winning to remain undefeated and in full control with playoff games looming.

No. 1 Lake Creek (32-0) has started the Texas 5A tournament already, beating Magnolia twice last week to set up a best-of-three with Weiss in the next round starting on Friday. The Lions have now won 70 of their last 72 contests.

Meanwhile, No. 2 Oaks Christian (28-0) opens the California Interscholastic Federation Southern Section playoffs with a matchup against Valley View later today.

Fellow California school Clovis North (19-1) remains third in the rankings, while eight-time reigning Mississippi Class 5A champion and No. 4 team Neshoba Central (25-2) has Saltillo standing between itself and another state final four berth. Fifth-ranked Lakewood Ranch (24-2) has a Florida 7A, District 8 playoff contest today versus Venice.

No. 6 Roncalli (17-0) beat a pair of ranked teams — Marist and New Palestine — on Saturday to maintain its position, while undefeated newcomers Benton (27-0) and Anthony Wayne (20-0) both made a big statement by debuting in the top 10.

State rankings submitted by the 2022 NFCA High School Steering Committee are used to compile the USA TODAY Sports/NFCA High School Super 25. Teams are chosen based on performance, roster quality, strength of schedule, and active NFCA membership.

Lake Creek keeps rolling atop USA TODAY Sports/NFCA High School Super 25.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Two more wins kept Lake Creek unbeaten and firmly in the No. 1 spot in the USA TODAY Sports/NFCA High School Super 25 for a sixth-straight week.

The (30-0) Lions rolled past Caney Creek for the second time in less than a month, 11-1, last Friday, then edged Katy, 1-0, on Tuesday. Lake Creek has now won 68 of its last 70 games.

For the second week in a row, most of the teams in the Super 25 remain unchanged, including the top 10. Riverton (18-1) and Marist (11-2-1) swapped the No. 8 and No. 9 positions, though.

Elsewhere, Deer Park (31-2), Damascus (12-0) and Donovan Catholic (9-0) all kept winning to jump ahead of Pineville (33-3), which lost 4-3 in eight innings to Sam Houston on Saturday in the Louisiana state Class 5A quarterfinals.

Unbeaten Monroe-Woodbury (10-0) makes its Super 25 debut this week at No. 19, also just ahead of Pineville, while the other newcomer is No. 22 South Lyon (5-1), which replaces fellow Michigan school Owosso on the list.

Lake Creek remains No. 1 in USA TODAY Sports/NFCA High School Super 25.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Unbeaten Lake Creek won two more games, by a convincing 24-0 margin, to keep rolling along as the No. 1 team in the USA TODAY Sports/NFCA High School Super 25 for a fifth-straight week.

The (28-0) Lions beat Kingwood Park, 8-0, last Thursday, and rocked Cleveland, 16-0, on Tuesday. Lake Creek, which has won 66 of its last 68 games, plays Caney Creek on Friday at home. The Lions already have a win over Caney Creek this season: 12-1 on March 29.

Meanwhile, most of the Super 25 remains unchanged, including the entire top 10. The only changes this week stemmed from losses by Alexander Central (17-2) and Hewitt-Trussville (33-4-1).

Alexander Central lost a one-run game, 2-1, to fellow-ranked squad South Caldwell (11-1) last Thursday, while Hewitt-Trussville fell to Fairhope, 7-5, on Saturday at the Berry Strong Tournament.

Lakota West (12-3) lost 12-8 to a solid Floyd Central program and 12-1 to No. 6 Roncalli (6-0) on Saturday, but also added three victories, including Wednesday’s 14-0 triumph over Princeton that gave head coach Keith Castner his 500th win, to keep the Firebirds at No. 23.

Lake Creek secure atop USA TODAY Sports/NFCA High School Super 25

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Unbeaten Lake Creek scored two more lopsided victories to continue its hold on the top spot in the USA TODAY Sports/NFCA High School Super 25 for a fourth-straight week.

The (26-0) Lions beat Montgomery and Porter by a combined 19-1 margin, and the NFCA Texas High School Leadoff Classic titlists have now won 64 of their last 66 games.

Meanwhile, Oaks Christian (20-0), Clovis North (15-0), Neshoba Central (18-2) and Lakewood Ranch (16-2) all kept winning as well, to round out an unchanged first five. Losses by Villa Park (18-4) and Riverton (13-1) allowed undefeated Roncalli (2-0) and Jackson (10-0), and one-loss Marist (6-1-1) to move past them in the top 10.

Perennial powers Eastern Alamance (12-1) and New Palestine (3-0-1) won four and three contests, respectively, to climb a poll-best four places apiece. Unbeaten Lincoln-Way West (6-0) is this week’s newcomer, replacing Lincoln-Way Central (5-3-1), which went a different direction with two losses.

Lake Creek remains No. 1 in USA TODAY Sports/NFCA High School Super 25.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Unbeaten Lake Creek scored two more lopsided victories to remain the No. 1 team in the USA TODAY Sports/NFCA High School Super 25 for a third-straight week.

The (24-0) Lions defeated New Caney, 13-2, last Friday, then breezed by Dayton, 9-1, on Tuesday. NFCA Texas High School Leadoff Classic titlist Lake Creek has now won 62 of its last 64 games, with just a pair of playoff losses last May to eventual Texas 5A state champion Barbers Hill over that span. The Lions have outscored their opponents 195-26 this season.

Undefeated California schools Oaks Christian and Clovis North swapped places at No. 2 and 3 this week. Oaks Christian (17-0) won three games, while Clovis North (11-0) captured the only game on its schedule. The two have combined to outscore opponents 207-10 over 28 contests.

Villa Park (17-3) dropped from fourth to sixth after losing three of its last five, moving perennial powers Neshoba Central (15-2) and Lakewood Ranch (13-2) back up one place apiece.

Meanwhile, Marist’s 11-10 slugfest loss to Minooka on Wednesday allowed Jackson (9-0) to leapfrog into the No. 9 spot, and Lincoln-Way Central (5-1-1), which tied Marist 5-5 in nine innings on Monday, joins the poll at No. 24.

Lake Creek strengthens grip on top spot in USA TODAY Sports/NFCA High School Super 25.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Unbeaten Lake Creek won two more games to remain the top team in the USA TODAY Sports/NFCA High School Super 25 for a second-straight week.

The (22-0) Lions rocked Cleveland, 17-0, last Friday, then rolled past Caney Creek, 12-1, on Tuesday to keep roaring. Lake Creek, which captured the NFCA Texas High School Leadoff Classic earlier this season, has now won 60 of its last 62 games, with just a pair of playoff losses last May to eventual Texas 5A state champion Barbers Hill over that span.

Clovis North (10-0) kept pace at No. 2, defeating Madera, 13-1, last Thursday in its lone action. Fellow California schools Oaks Christian (14-0) and Villa Park (14-0) both stayed perfect and jumped past perennial powers Neshoba Central (9-2) and Lakewood Ranch (10-2) — who each lost again — to give the Golden State three teams in the first four.

Elsewhere, No. 11 Alexander Central (12-0) and No. 12 Lexington (10-0) continued to climb the rankings, gaining nine and 10 places, respectively, to get tantalizingly close to the top 10, while No. 9 Marist (2-0) and No. 10 Jackson (8-0) got there this week.

Pineville (24-1), North Augusta (14-1), Eastern Alamance (7-1), Hermiston (6-0) and Damascus (4-0) are this week’s poll newcomers.

USA TODAY Sports/NFCA High School Super 25 softball rankings: Week 3

Lake Creek takes over top spot in USA TODAY Sports/NFCA High School Super 25.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Unbeaten Lake Creek continued to take care of business and benefited from rare losses for both of the top two teams to claim the No. 1 spot in the USA TODAY Sports/NFCA High School Super 25 this week.

The (20-0) Lions rolled past Porter, 8-0, on Tuesday in their only game to dethrone Neshoba Central at the top, where the (7-1) Rockets had lived for the past 13 weeks, dating to April 8, 2021. Neshoba lost 2-0 last Saturday to one-loss Northwest Rankin, which snapped a 53-game win streak for the eight-time reigning Mississippi state Class 5A champions, who are a stunning 117-2 over their last 119 contests.

Meanwhile, Lakewood Ranch (9-1) was routed Wednesday night at unbeaten Lake Brantley to fall out of the No. 2 spot. It was just the Mustangs’ fourth loss in their last 81 games. Lakewood Ranch gets a chance for revenge against the Patriots tonight at home.

Clovis North (9-0) moves into the second spot, while West Monroe (17-1), which went 5-1 this past week, is the new No. 3 squad. Neshoba and Lakewood Ranch move to the bottom of a reshuffled top five.

A pair of newcomers — California’s unbeaten Oaks Christian and Villa Park (both 13-0) — jump right into the mix at six and seven, respectively. Oaks Christian has allowed zero runs over its last four games, and no runs in 10 of 13 games this season, while outscoring opponents 108-5, and Villa Park has continued to roll after winning the prestigious Dave Kops Tournament of Champions two weeks ago. Washington’s Jackson (13-0) is the other new team this week at No. 16.

USA TODAY Sports/NFCA High School Super 25 softball rankings: Week 2

Neshoba remains No. 1 in USA TODAY Sports/NFCA High School Super 25.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Eight-time reigning Mississippi state Class 5A champion Neshoba Central won two games this past week to remain the top team in the 2022 USA TODAY Sports/NFCA High School Super 25 for a 13th straight week, dating to April 8, 2021.

The (6-0) Rockets beat East Webster, 8-5, last Thursday — which snapped their streak of five straight games with at least 16 runs scored — then returned to scoring form in a 13-1 rout of Leake Central last Friday. Neshoba plays one-loss Northwest Rankin (8-1) on Saturday.

The teams below them in an unchanged top five continued to win also, going a combined 11-0 since last week’s first ranking. No. 2 Lakewood Ranch (9-0) won twice, while No. 3 Lake Creek (19-0) added four victories, fourth-ranked West Monroe (12-0) had three, and No. 5 Clovis North (6-0) recorded two.

California’s unbeaten South (11-0) joins the poll at No. 6, while Park Vista (5-0), John Curtis (19-1), Byrnes (4-0) and Roncalli (0-0) round out the top 10.

No. 11 Riverton (7-0) and No. 25 Owosso (0-0) are the two other newcomers this week.

State rankings submitted by the 2022 NFCA High School Steering Committee are used to compile the USA TODAY Sports/NFCA High School Super 25. Teams are chosen based on performance, roster quality, strength of schedule, and active NFCA membership.

Neshoba starts No. 1 in USA TODAY Sports/NFCA High School Super 25

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Eight-time reigning Mississippi state Class 5A champion Neshoba Central starts the 2022 USA TODAY Sports/NFCA High School Super 25 where it finished last season: No. 1 nationally.

The (4-0) Rockets are already off to a red-hot start after going 32-0 in 2021. Neshoba has had at least 16 runs in every game, and has outscored its opponents 71-13 through four contests. They return to the field on Saturday against unbeaten Lewisburg (7-0).

Similarly, Florida’s Lakewood Ranch (7-0) opens in the No. 2 spot it finished in 2021. The Mustangs dodged their only scare — a 7-6 eight-inning victory over Charlotte on March 1.

NFCA Texas High School Leadoff Classic titlist Lake Creek (15-0) is third in the first coaches ranking of the spring season. The Lions have won eight more games since a 3-2, nine-inning triumph over Klein Collins in the Leadoff championship game on Feb. 19.

No. 4 West Monroe (9-0) already has recorded wins over three reigning Louisiana state champions, while California’s unbeaten duo of Clovis North (4-0) and Beaumont (9-0) are fifth and seventh, respectively. Clovis has allowed just one run over its first four games.

Defending Louisiana state Division I titlist John Curtis (15-0), in the No. 6 spot, has outscored its opponents 163-39 so far this season, including victories over a state champion and a state runner-up. Florida’s Park Vista (4-0) is eighth, while Texas’ Georgetown (14-1) is No. 9, and Arizona’s Xavier College Prep (8-1) rounds out the top 10. Both Georgetown and Xavier have plated 98 runs so far this season.
