A Streets of Rage movie is in the works from Lionsgate Films, Deadline announced in a recent report, and leading the fighting game project as writer and producer is John Wick writer Derek Kolstad. We previously reported on rumors that Kolstad was involved in a Streets of Rage movie earlier in 2022, and it turns out pretty much everything about those rumors was accurate.
The team working with Kolstad is well-versed in adapting video games to movies. Toru Nakahara, who also produced both Sonic the Hedgehog movies and is co-producing the upcoming Yakuza movie adaptation, will produce alongside Kolstad. Production company dj2 Entertainment is involved as well and also helped produce the Sonic movies.
“When Dmitri [Johnson, dj2] first mentioned the idea of cracking a Streets of Rage movie, I was so immediately freaking in,” Kolstad said in a statement. “And to play with Sega? The 10-year-old me is still grinning.”
Streets of Rage was Sega’s flagship fighting game franchise throughout most of the 1990s before the series took an extended hiatus after Streets of Rage 3 in 1994. Sega brought it back to life in 2020 with Streets of Rage 4.
The movie is still in its early phases at this point. Details about its plot and release date remain under wraps for now.
