Steve Kornacki is back in the sports world and everything feels right again

Steve Kornacki is korbacki…I’m sorry. Couldn’t help it.

Steve Kornacki worked wonders last year during the presidential election on MSNBC where he gave us updated voter numbers every hour. State by state. County by county. This man had us covered.

He didn’t go home, either. He stayed in the studio to the point where he became a whole meme. That’s dedication. Sacrifice. This man is a legend. You’ve never seen somebody work a board like that.

Which is exactly why Steve Kornacki is perfect for the sports world.

In a world where breakdowns happen on virtual boards on TV all the time, nobody is better than Kornacki. Nobody.

He’s flexed his stuff in the sports world before. He did the NFL’s playoff picture last season and he also did the Kentucky Derby. It’s been a while since he’s done sports work, though. And we miss him dearly.

But no worries, folks. Kornacki is back. And he’s hanging around for a little bit, too.

Kornacki is going to be a fixture on Football Night in America on Sundays for the night game, per Awful Announcing. It all starts with his first appearance this weekend as the NFL gears up for the playoffs.

Get ready for some virtual board magic, folks. It’s going to be a good few weeks in the NFL.

Steve Kornacki correctly called Medina Spirit to win the Kentucky Derby, and fans loved it

Steve Kornacki for the win!

Steve Kornacki, the NBC News and MSNBC national political correspondent, became a viral sensation during election week in November, and since then, he’s been part of other NBC broadcasts, including Sunday Night Football.

People latched onto and appreciated Kornacki for several reasons, his trustworthiness, enthusiasm and insightful analysis among them. He and his famous khaki pants returned to the world of sports Saturday for the Kentucky Derby, and fans of his were so excited.

The love for Kornacki remained consistent as he contributed to NBC’s broadcast and broke down how and why the odds for the Triple Crown leg changed. As he said Saturday, he’s just trying to make sense of all the numbers — something viewers now trust him to do on a variety of subjects.

And then Kornacki’s analysis turned out to be perfectly spot on with him correctly predicting Medina Spirit would win the 147th Kentucky Derby with  12-1 odds.

And as Kornacki periodically appeared on NBC’s Kentucky Derby broadcast, his fans just couldn’t get enough of him, especially after he called the winner.

Steve Kornacki battled through some tech woes to dominate the NFL playoff picture on SNF

This guy is good.

Steve Kornacki was back on the “Sunday Night Football” pregame and halftime shows for a second straight week to break down the NFL playoff picture through Sunday’s Week 14 games and once again it was a pretty darn awesome segment.

Kornacki even showed some of his well-polished grace when he had some technical issues while trying to write numbers on his big screen. I mean, what  a pro. This guy is good.

This MSNBC News legend, who went viral during the election night coverage, did an excellent job of not just showing us which teams were in and out of the playoffs right now, but he used some really good deeper numbers to make it all so clear.

He battled through this:

And here’s his whole segment:

MSNBC’s Steve Kornacki just refuses to go home so now he’s a meme

Please take a nap and eat some fruit snacks bb.

I assume plenty of people at MSNBC have pleaded, cajoled even tried to strong arm political analyst and now beloved viral star Steve Kornacki into going home, but the man simply refuses to stop working.

Kornacki started on Tuesday, and as far as I and the rest of the internet can tell, has taken only a few limited breaks over the past three days. As we roll into Friday, and closer to a final call on who the next President of the United States will be, Kornacki is still going strong, refusing to abandon us, his loyal subjects, in our time of need.

Last night, around midnight eastern, MSNBC said that Kornacki was “having a mandatory rest and food period,” which comically made it sound like they had sent an overexcited toddler home to take a nap.  A few minutes later though, Kornacki tweeted for the first time in two days, saying he was heading back into the studio.  Of course, the internet loved it and so, so many amazing Kornacki memes and jokes were born.

The man is a machine. An unstoppable madman fueled by diet cokes and a pure, insatiable need for data. And because we all love him, I think I speak for everyone when I say Steve, please, please get some sleep.

Steve Kornacki and John King are the election coverage MVPs we need right now

We need both of them right now!

We’ve all been glued to our TVs waiting for election results to trickle in, and two men have risen to the challenge of helping soothe the nerves of a rattled nation. Over the past 48 hours, CNN’s John King and MSNBC’s Steve Kornacki have become election coverage superstars, as they and their map board touch screens guide us through a chaotic time.

While the wait in excruciating, it should be noted that the election process is playing out exactly as experts predicted it would. It’s simply taking time to accurately count votes, and while the waiting is the hardest part, it is not an indication that the democratic process has been subverted or corrupted. Because of a confluence of factors —pandemic, early voting, mail in ballots etc — it’s taking longer than usual to tabulate results which means that the two men who run the map boards for CNN and MSNBC have been our constant companions for the past two days. It isn’t just that King and Kornacki have been on TV a lot, but they’ve risen to viral status because of their distinct styles, that, while wildly different, are trustworthy, soothing and exactly what we need at the moment.

On election night, CNN’s King was a stark contrast to Wolf Blitzer’s bombastic persona, taking the entire temperature of the network’s broadcast down from defcon 1 to a much more reasonable level. As we waited for the initial polls to close, King kept repeating that the election was playing out in a fair way, that there were no credible concerns with how votes were counted, and this is what we do as a democracy. It was clear that his goal wasn’t just to deliver information, but to protect the sanctity of the democratic process. During a tense time, his constant reassurances were what people needed to hear.

Over the past two days, King has been fair and precise in reporting where votes are coming from, what we don’t yet know, and what each candidate needs to do to win. He’s also been insistent in saying that all votes should be counted, regardless of which side they come down on. King has been like an elder statesmen, not flashy at all, just consistent, reasonable, and unflappable. At a time when people are so on edge, he’s been the stability we need.

Now, for those who found King a little too mellow, MSNBC’s Steve Kornacki, a sudden viral star, has been the perfect antidote. On TV, Kornacki has been a ball of uncontainable energy and enthusiasm, leaning over MSNBC’s map board with all the eagerness of a puppy trying to climb into a loved one’s lap. While his style is the exact opposite of King’s, he’s no less trustworthy and has kept his focus on what the numbers are telling us. His enthusiasm, his sometimes halting delivery, his SuperCuts hairstyle and Gap khakis have made him so popular that MSNBC actually started a Kornacki Cam for the superfans.

Kornacki’s great gift isn’t just how smart he clearly is, it’s that he doesn’t look like he belongs on TV at all, which somehow makes it easier to trust him. King looks like he came from central casting (the square jaw, the blinding smile, the linebacker physique) while Kornacki looks as if they pulled a very excitable accountant off the street. His extreme nerdiness is so endearing, it has made people across the internet thirst madly.

Still, he has a plain way of speaking about the results that makes the information accessible, without being condescending. Most of all, his enthusiasm for the information, the way he’s explaining how it all fits together, has been hugely important in helping connect the dots during a chaotic time.

Yesterday, I tried to get the internet to pick one MVP between Kornacki and King, and people were hotly divided. Mostly though, it was clear that there was no need to chose. We need both of them right now. I’ve watched so much election coverage, I hear King’s deep baritone in my sleep, find myself saying ‘tomorrow’ they oddly specific way Kornacki always says it. This morning, it was a big topic of conversation that Kornacki changed his tie, though it’s not clear if he’s eaten or slept since the polls closed. I assume he’s just running on an unlimited supply of Diet Coke. I have no idea how tired John King is, all I know is that his dashing white hair hasn’t budged an inch in DAYS and his tan is unbeatable. Every time I turn on the TV, either late night or in the morning, one of them is invariably there, waving arm circles in front of a bright red and blue board, determined to guide this thing home.
