Steve Clifford officially back to Charlotte

Charlotte Hornets President of Basketball Operations & General Manager Mitch Kupchak announced today the team has named Steve Clifford head coach. Clifford, who previously served the team’s head coach from 2013-2018, returns to Charlotte, where his 196 wins ranks second in franchise history, sitting just 11 behind Allan Bristow.

Report: Hornets to hire Steve Clifford for second stint as head coach

Clifford led the Hornets to two playoff appearances in five years from 2013-18.

The Charlotte Hornets finally have their man — again.

First reported by ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, the Hornets are hiring Steve Clifford for his second stint as the franchise’s head coach.

Once Kenny Atkinson opted to return to the Warriors, Clifford emerged as a serious candidate early this week alongside Mike D’Antoni, who was an initial finalist for the job.

Clifford coached the Hornets from 2013-18, leading them to two playoff appearances. Clifford spent last season as a coaching consultant for Brooklyn Nets head coach Steve Nash following his three-year stint coaching the Orlando Magic.

Report: Steve Clifford has emerged as candidate to return to Hornets

Could Michael Jordan bring a familiar face on the bench back to Charlotte?

The Charlotte Hornets coaching search feels to be never ending.

After being spurned by Warriros assistant Kenny Atkinson after verbally agreeing to be Charlotte’s next head coach, Michael Jordan and company are back to the drawing board to find their next leader.

Reported by ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski on Tuesday, Hornets owner Michael Jordan would meet with Mike D’Antoni for the third time to discuss the head coaching vacancy.

But, a familiar face in Charlotte may have just entered the chat.

Reported by NBA Insider Marc Stein on Thursday, former Hornets head coach Steve Clifford ‘has emerged as a candidate’ to return to Charlotte.

Stein:

“There is some serious mounting buzz that former Hornets coach Steve Clifford, who already coached in Charlotte for five seasons and took Michael Jordan’s team to the playoffs twice, has emerged as a candidate to make a return to the Queen City as Jordan scrambles to fill the massive void on his bench following Kenny Atkinson’s shock decision to stay in Golden State as an assistant.”

Clifford coached the Hornets from 2013-18, leading them to two playoff appearances. Clifford spent last season as a coaching consultant for Brooklyn Nets head coach Steve Nash following his three-year stint coaching the Orlando Magic.

Mark Jackson the preferred candidate of Kings owner Vivek Ranadive?

Former Orlando and Charlotte head coach Steve Clifford has interviewed and so has former Golden State coach and ESPN analyst Mark Jackson. Sources say, Mike Brown, the Golden State associate head coach whose team is tied, 1-1, in its West semifinal series with Memphis, spent informal time with Kings officials on Wednesday and has his formal interview on Thursday. As Bleacher Report’s Jake Fischer noted on Tuesday, there is indeed a strong sense from sources close to the situation that Jackson is the preferred candidate of Kings owner Vivek Ranadive. But the Kings insist there’s a level playing field, and that second-year general manager Monte McNair will be given the leeway to make the final decision.

Meanwhile, in Sacramento, Los Angeles …

Meanwhile, in Sacramento, Los Angeles and Charlotte, the search for a coach of his caliber continues. The Kings, who briefly considered Williams as an option in the 2019 offseason before then-general manager Vlade Divac moved quickly to hire Luke Walton, appear likely to fill their vacancy sooner than the Lakers or Hornets. A decision between the three finalists, sources say, is expected by the week’s end.
