Steve Belichick ruthlessly roasts Bill Belichick’s current job status

Steve Belichick delivers the punchline of a lifetime when comparing himself to his father, Bill Belichick

Steve Belichick looks up to his father, Bill Belichick, but he isn’t afraid to roast him in front of a room full of media members, when given a chance.

The Washington Huskies defensive coordinator was recently asked to describe the main difference between he and his father, and he summed it up with a red-hot, one-liner burn for the ages.

“I got a job and he doesn’t,” said Steve Belichick. “He knows that. I look up to my dad. He’s a mentor to me, but I’m myself. I work with these guys. I work with the kids, and I recruit kids. Just going to be myself. I’m not going to try and be him.”

This will be Steve Belichick’s first time venturing outside of New England as a coach. So he’ll no longer be under his dad’s umbrella with a Huskies team that made it all the way to the national title game in the 2023 season. .

This is a big opportunity for him to start writing a story that doesn’t include the greatest coach of all time at the top of the rolling credits.

Steve Belichick explained he’s different from Bill Belichick by roasting his dad’s unemployment status

Steve Belichick sure has a sense of humor.

New Washington defensive coordinator Steve Belichick spend more than a decade coaching under his dad, legendary New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick.

However, he’s not afraid to poke fun at his dad’s lack of employment as the younger Belichick gets his career started at the collegiate level.

During media availability on Wednesday, Steve Belichick talked about how his dad is a mentor to him but also roasted him about how the two are different.

“I have a job; he doesn’t,” Steve Belichick quipped to the reporters present.

While you know he’s kidding, it’s still a shocking reality that Bill Belichick’s son has a job in football this year and he does not.

We’re sure that the elder Belichick is ready to get back into football sooner than later, and that some NFL team will give him another chance to lead their franchise to a Super Bowl.

For now, it’ll be Steve Belichick who carries on the family name in the sport. At the least, he’s got a great sense of humor about it.

Washington Huskies hire former Rutgers long snapper Steve Belichick as defensive coordinator

Steve Belichick has joined Washington as their defensive coordinator.

Washington’s coaching staff will include a Belichick in 2024. On Tuesday, the university announced that Steve Belichick will be the team’s new defensive coordinator. The former Rutgers football player will lead Washington in their first year in the Big Ten.

Belichick was an accomplished lacrosse player who spent his final year of college eligibility in 2011 with Rutgers as their long snapper.

In Belichick, Washington has added a coach with plenty of experience. He spent 12 years with the New England Patriots after being hired by his dad, Bill Belichick, in 2012. During his stint in New England, he wore many different hats.

After four years as the assistant coach, he was promoted to safeties coach ahead of the 2016 season. Three years later, Belichick called plays for the defense before becoming the outside linebackers coach in 2020.

While Belichick is turning the page on a new chapter in his career, the change is not unexpected. After his father and the Patriots parted ways a few weeks ago, rumors have been swirling about what was next. New Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo was open to keeping Steve and his brother Brian on his staff. Mayo and Steve had grown close over the years.

“I spent a lot of time with Steve in the dungeon, and we would go in there and break down film and talk ball,” Mayo said in mid-December via ESPN. “Hearing it from him, from a coach’s perspective — one of the greatest head coaches’ sons; and then I brought the on-the-field perspective.”

After a successful decade with the Patriots, Belichick will now get to form his own path.

Report: Steve Belichick accepts new role with college team

Steve Belichick has reportedly accepted a new job and role at the collegiate level

New England Patriots outside linebackers coach Steve Belichick accepted the position to become defensive coordinator at the University of Washington on Monday. This was reported by ESPN’s Field Yates

Belichick has spent the last 12 seasons with the Patriots. He officially started calling the defensive plays in 2019, before taking on the outside linebacker coaching position in 2020. There is some familiarity for Belichick in Washington.

He worked together with Huskies head coach Jedd Fisch in 2020, when Fisch was a quarterbacks coach for New England.

The Patriots defense has been one of the top units in football throughout most of Belichick’s tenure. One of their best years in recent memory came during the 2019 season, when they forced 38 turnovers and 25 interceptions. Stephon Gilmore was also named the Defensive Player of the Year that season.

With Steve Belichick officially moving on to another opportunity, it will be a changing of the guard for the Patriots, who will not have a Belichick on their sidelines for the first time in 24 years.

Report: Patriots assistant Steve Belichick interviewing for college job

Patriots outside linebackers coach Steve Belichick is reportedly interviewing for another defensive job on Friday

New England Patriots outside linebackers coach Steve Belichick is reportedly interviewing for a defensive job at the University of Washington on Friday, per ESPN’s Field Yates.

There were rumblings that Patriots coach Jerod Mayo extended both of Bill Belichick’s sons, Steve and Brian, job opportunities to stay in New England. But Steve’s upcoming interview could mean he’s looking to move in a different direction.

Washington is working to put a coaching staff around Jedd Fisch after Kalen DeBoer left for the University of Alabama as the replacement for legendary coach Nick Saban, who retired after the 2023 season.

Along with Steve Belichick, former Patriots running backs coach Vinnie Sunseri is also interviewing for a defensive coaching job at Washington.

A fresh start could be a good thing for Belichick as he continues to work his way through the coaching ranks.

The Patriots have already addressed the major staff positions with DeMarcus Covington being promoted as defensive coordinator, along with Alex Van Pelt being hired as offensive coordinator and Jeremy Springer being the special teams coaching hire.

11 candidates for Cowboys vacant defensive coordinator position

The Cowboys are in need of fresh perspective in the defensive coordinator role, but it may be a difficult fill. 11 candidates, both internal and external. | From @KDDrummondNFL

The Cowboys are in a unique situation now. They are going to have to find a new defensive coordinator after the departure of Dan Quinn. Quinn became Washington’s new head coach, and will have a playground to work with that includes $63 million in cap space and the No. 2 overall selection in a QB-heavy draft class.

That Dallas needs to replace a coordinator isn’t a big deal. The fact that their head coach is going into the final year of his contract without an extension is what makes things difficult. Defensive assistants in positive environments, or with a bunch of opportunities, might hesitate to pack up their lives (and families) for what might be a one-and-done.

On the other hand, veteran defensive minds might look at this as an opportunity to audition for one of the most famous sports jobs in America. Theoretically, a coach with experience would be in line to be at worst an interim hire should things go bad for Mike McCarthy’s offense and an in-season firing happened. They’d at least get consideration for the gig were Dallas to move on from McCarthy at the end of the 2024 season.

And if there’s success? Then the DC would be in running for head coach job elsewhere in 2025. With that in mind, here’s a collection of names —both internal and external —that could be on Jerry Jones and company’s radar as the interview process convenes.

More information on Jerod Mayo extending coaching opportunities to Bill Belichick’s sons

Jerod Mayo reportedly made hiring Bill Belichick’s sons a priority

New England Patriots coach Jerod Mayo made an offer to Bill Belichick’s sons to stay on the coaching staff, according to the Boston Herald’s Andrew Callahan.

Steve Belichick has been with the organization since 2012. He has served as the team’s outside linebackers coach since the 2020 season. Brian Belichck has been the safeties coach for the organization since 2020. He first joined the Patriots as a scouting assistant in 2016.

The defensive unit shined for the Patriots throughout the 2023 season, despite dealing with numerous injuries. They ranked first in the NFL with only 13.9 points allowed per game. They also were second in the NFL with only 27 touchdowns allowed on the season.

Callahan indicated that the Belichicks were high on Mayo’s priority list, as transcribed by NESN.com’s Adam London:

Offering the Belichicks was one of Mayo’s first moves, a source confirmed to the Herald, and those coaches have support elsewhere in the building, should they choose to stay.

The defensive side of the football has been one of the bright spots for the Patriots over the past couple of seasons. Keeping the Belichicks on staff would certainly be a positive move to aid in that success continuing.

Report: Bill Belichick’s sons offered opportunity to stay on Patriots’ coaching staff in 2024

Could Steve Belichick and Brian Belichick return to the Patriots in 2024?

There could be familiar faces on Jerod Mayo’s coaching staff, as Steve Belichick and Brian Belichick have both been offered the opportunity to return to the team for 2024.

This was reported by Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer.

Steve has been the outside linebackers coach for the organization since 2020, while Brian has served as the team’s safeties coach since 2020. Both began their careers with the Patriots as assistants in different capacities before joining the coaching staff.

The Patriots defense was a source of strength last season. Steve, along with newly-hired head coach Jerod Mayo, helped a unit that ranked seventh in total defense. This included ranking fourth in rushing yards allowed per game (89.3). The unit remained a source of strength, despite significant injuries in October to starting cornerback Christian Gonzalez and linebacker Matthew Judon.

Here’s what Breer had to say about the possibility of Bill’s sons staying on staff:

[anyclip-media thumbnail=”undefined” playlistId=”undefined” content=”dW5kZWZpbmVk”][/anyclip-media]Belichick’s sons, defensive play-caller and linebackers coach Steve, and safeties coach Brian, have both already been offered the opportunity to return to the team for 2024. Mayo and the elder son (Steve) have grown close as they’ve collaborated to run the Patriots’ defense the past five years.

Continuity and familiarity wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world, as Mayo looks to make his mark early with the Patriots.

Steve Belichick not surprised by Christian Gonzalez’s early success

Some in the Patriots’ building saw Christian Gonzalez’s early success coming before the season even started

New England Patriots rookie cornerback Christian Gonzalez is impressing his coaches three weeks into the season.

Gonzalez has been matched up with some of the toughest wide receivers in the NFL, and he has taken each and every challenge by storm.

Just look at New York Jets wide receiver Garrett Wilson’s statistics, when matched up with the Patriots’ talented defensive back. Per Patriots.com’s Evan Lazar, the receiver caught only three receptions for 18 yards.

Gonzalez was able to hold his own against the likes of Miami Dolphins All-Pro wide receiver Tyreek Hill as well. Hill tallied zero catches on two targets, and one of those throws was intercepted.

The body of work that the Oregon product has been able to put forth is impressive but not surprising to the Patriots coaching staff, as transcribed by NESN.com’s Zack Cox.

“I don’t know if I would say surprised, just because we did a lot of work on him coming out of college,” said Patriots defensive play-caller Steve Belichick. “You could see a lot of these traits when you watched all the college tape and stuff like that. So, I wouldn’t say surprised, but he’s been playing really well so far, which is the expectation for all the players we have around here.

“But I’m definitely happy we have him. This is why we drafted him and everybody else. I’m happy that he’s doing well and hope it can continue.”

Several of New England’s recent draft classes have been criticized quite loudly by fans and media alike. Many thought the Patriots should have selected a wide receiver with their first pick in the draft.

Nevertheless, Gonzalez is continuing the Patriots’ successful tradition of drafting corners.
