UNC football’s latest transfer portal addition is another former Washington Husky

UNC’s latest transfer portal addition could be a key secondary reinforcement this coming fall.

The North Carolina Tar Heels continue snatching players up out of the transfer portal, showcasing that young men do, infact, want to come play for 8-time Super Bowl champion Bill Belichick.

UNC’s additions include Purdue quarterback Ryan Browne, UConn edge rusher Pryce Yates (Fenway Bowl MVP) and Minnesota defensive back Coleman Bryson.

We’re also starting to see a North Carolina-Washington pipeline develop: Steve Belichick (Bill’s oldest son) is the Tar Heels’ new defensive coordinator, UNC added linebacker Khmori House and, more recently, Huskies wide receiver Jason Washington.

North Carolina picked up another Washington commitment on Monday, January 13, landing freshman safety Peyton Waters.

Initially a 4-star wide receiver coming out of Birmingham Community High School, Waters was California’s 25th-ranked player in the 2024 recruiting class. Waters made the switch to safety ahead of his first collegiate football season, seeing limited time in Washington’s games against USC, Penn State and Louisville, its Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl opponent.

Waters’ best game came during the Huskies’ 26-21 win over USC on November 2, when he recorded two tackles. He should compete for a starting spot on day one, particularly with Jakeen Harris declaring for the NFL Draft and DeAndre Boykins entering him name in the portal.

Not only is Waters the fourth Washington Husky now in Chapel Hill, but the second Washington defensive player following Steve Belichick, who was the defensive coordinator in Seattle during 2024.

The Huskies finished 6-7 with a bowl loss, just like the Tar Heels, but the Huskies’ defensive made a massive improvement.

I’m excited to see what Waters brings to UNC. You can track North Carolina’s latest transfer portal moves here.

Bill Belichick mentions NFL influence on new UNC football staff

Bill Belichick’s football staff at UNC has a heavy NFL influence.

While we’re still currently in the midst of Bowl Season, there isn’t more excitement and anticipation surrounding one college football program – outside of the CFP – than the North Carolina Tar Heels.

UNC took a home run swing and hired Bill Belichick as its next football coach in December, just weeks after firing Mack Brown. Belichick is an 8-time Super Bowl winner (six as New England Patriots head coach), 17-time AFC East winner and he coached Tom Brady, the greatest football player to walk this earth.

The Belichick effect is in full swing, with several transfers choosing North Carolina and future recruits highly considering the Carolina Blue.

Part of the Belichick effect also includes the Tar Heels’ coaching staff, which includes the likes of expected offensive coordinator Freddie Kitchens, defensive coordinator Steve Belichick, UNC General Manager Michael Lombardi and Director of Player Personnel Joe Anile.

“I will really start to move on that this week and next week again,” Belichick said “A lot of coaches – who will potentially be on the staff – are either still involved in the playoffs, bowl games or still involved in the NFL. There’s still another week of the regular season, and then some of them are in the playoffs as well. We’ll see how that plays out. There’ll be a strong NFL presence on the staff, but not exclusively. We have some other people, too, that we’re working on. We’re trying to put together the best that we can. We’ll hire coaches who will help the players and help produce winning football at Carolina. We’re here to help the players.”

North Carolina also has Taylor Edwards and Andrew Blaylock in the Player Personnel Department.

As Belichick said himself, don’t expect the Tar Heels to stop adding coaches. Who will be Belichick’s next hire?

Former top Patriots defensive coach joining Bill Belichick at UNC

The Belichick reunion at UNC is official

Washington Huskies defensive coordinator Steve Belichick is set to join his father, North Carolina Tar Heels coach Bill Belichick, in Chapel Hill. The move was confirmed on Sunday by Matt Zenitz of CBS Sports and 247 Sports.

The younger Belichick will join North Carolina’s staff after Washington’s bowl game against Louisville on Christmas Eve.

It will be a father-son reunion for the Belichicks. Steve worked on his father’s staff in New England, serving as a defensive assistant from 2012-2015. He then served as the safeties coach from 2016-2018 and moved over to defensive backs in 2019.

He officially joined the Washington staff earlier in the year after the Patriots parted ways with Bill Belichick. At Washington, he served under head coach Jedd Fisch, who is also a former member of the Patriots’ staff.

Even when the Patriots struggled, they still had one of the NFL’s top defensive units under the Belichicks. We’ll see if the father-son duo can work that same magic at the collegiate level.

Bill Belichick makes a splash with latest addition to UNC football coaching staff

Who is the latest addition to Bill Belichick’s coaching staff?

Despite struggling through their regular season, the North Carolina Tar Heels have a ton of excitement within their football program right now.

On Wednesday, December 11, UNC hit a home run and hired Bill Belichick as its next head football coach. Belichick was initially thought of as a surprise candidate, but after a second interview, it became clear North Carolina was serious about hiring the 8-time Super Bowl Champion.

With Belichick now in charge, he is tasked with filling out his coaching staff. That includes defensive coordinator, a spot Belichick just filled.

On Sunday, Dec. 22, On3 Sports’ Alex Byington reported that Steve Belichick is expected to join Bill in Chapel Hill.

If you don’t know already, or the last name didn’t give it away, Steve is Bill’s eldest of two sons.

Steve’s move to coach the Tar Heels was expected, as a rumored contingent of Bill’s initial hiring was Steve taking over – when Bill retires.

Steve is currently the Washington Huskies’ defensive coordinator – and will finish out their season. Washington (6-6) will play Louisville in the Tony The Tiger Sun Bowl on New Year’s Eve.

Despite the Huskies struggling in their first season after appearing in January’s National Championship game, Steve Belichick drastically improved their defense. According to the On3 Sports article we linked above, Washington’s defense improved from 99th last season (406.7 YPG) to 26th (324.8 YPG) this year.

UNC’s defense was yet another massive disappointment this season, allowing 377 yards per game, but slightly-improved from 404.4 yards per game in 2023.

Steve spent 2012-2023 with the New England Patriots – and now, he’ll get to join his father again.

Steve Belichick ruthlessly roasts Bill Belichick’s current job status

Steve Belichick delivers the punchline of a lifetime when comparing himself to his father, Bill Belichick

Steve Belichick looks up to his father, Bill Belichick, but he isn’t afraid to roast him in front of a room full of media members, when given a chance.

The Washington Huskies defensive coordinator was recently asked to describe the main difference between he and his father, and he summed it up with a red-hot, one-liner burn for the ages.

“I got a job and he doesn’t,” said Steve Belichick. “He knows that. I look up to my dad. He’s a mentor to me, but I’m myself. I work with these guys. I work with the kids, and I recruit kids. Just going to be myself. I’m not going to try and be him.”

This will be Steve Belichick’s first time venturing outside of New England as a coach. So he’ll no longer be under his dad’s umbrella with a Huskies team that made it all the way to the national title game in the 2023 season. .

This is a big opportunity for him to start writing a story that doesn’t include the greatest coach of all time at the top of the rolling credits.

Steve Belichick explained he’s different from Bill Belichick by roasting his dad’s unemployment status

Steve Belichick sure has a sense of humor.

New Washington defensive coordinator Steve Belichick spend more than a decade coaching under his dad, legendary New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick.

However, he’s not afraid to poke fun at his dad’s lack of employment as the younger Belichick gets his career started at the collegiate level.

During media availability on Wednesday, Steve Belichick talked about how his dad is a mentor to him but also roasted him about how the two are different.

“I have a job; he doesn’t,” Steve Belichick quipped to the reporters present.

While you know he’s kidding, it’s still a shocking reality that Bill Belichick’s son has a job in football this year and he does not.

We’re sure that the elder Belichick is ready to get back into football sooner than later, and that some NFL team will give him another chance to lead their franchise to a Super Bowl.

For now, it’ll be Steve Belichick who carries on the family name in the sport. At the least, he’s got a great sense of humor about it.

Washington Huskies hire former Rutgers long snapper Steve Belichick as defensive coordinator

Steve Belichick has joined Washington as their defensive coordinator.

Washington’s coaching staff will include a Belichick in 2024. On Tuesday, the university announced that Steve Belichick will be the team’s new defensive coordinator. The former Rutgers football player will lead Washington in their first year in the Big Ten.

Belichick was an accomplished lacrosse player who spent his final year of college eligibility in 2011 with Rutgers as their long snapper.

In Belichick, Washington has added a coach with plenty of experience. He spent 12 years with the New England Patriots after being hired by his dad, Bill Belichick, in 2012. During his stint in New England, he wore many different hats.

After four years as the assistant coach, he was promoted to safeties coach ahead of the 2016 season. Three years later, Belichick called plays for the defense before becoming the outside linebackers coach in 2020.

While Belichick is turning the page on a new chapter in his career, the change is not unexpected. After his father and the Patriots parted ways a few weeks ago, rumors have been swirling about what was next. New Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo was open to keeping Steve and his brother Brian on his staff. Mayo and Steve had grown close over the years.

“I spent a lot of time with Steve in the dungeon, and we would go in there and break down film and talk ball,” Mayo said in mid-December via ESPN. “Hearing it from him, from a coach’s perspective — one of the greatest head coaches’ sons; and then I brought the on-the-field perspective.”

After a successful decade with the Patriots, Belichick will now get to form his own path.

Report: Steve Belichick accepts new role with college team

Steve Belichick has reportedly accepted a new job and role at the collegiate level

New England Patriots outside linebackers coach Steve Belichick accepted the position to become defensive coordinator at the University of Washington on Monday. This was reported by ESPN’s Field Yates

Belichick has spent the last 12 seasons with the Patriots. He officially started calling the defensive plays in 2019, before taking on the outside linebacker coaching position in 2020. There is some familiarity for Belichick in Washington.

He worked together with Huskies head coach Jedd Fisch in 2020, when Fisch was a quarterbacks coach for New England.

The Patriots defense has been one of the top units in football throughout most of Belichick’s tenure. One of their best years in recent memory came during the 2019 season, when they forced 38 turnovers and 25 interceptions. Stephon Gilmore was also named the Defensive Player of the Year that season.

With Steve Belichick officially moving on to another opportunity, it will be a changing of the guard for the Patriots, who will not have a Belichick on their sidelines for the first time in 24 years.

Report: Patriots assistant Steve Belichick interviewing for college job

Patriots outside linebackers coach Steve Belichick is reportedly interviewing for another defensive job on Friday

New England Patriots outside linebackers coach Steve Belichick is reportedly interviewing for a defensive job at the University of Washington on Friday, per ESPN’s Field Yates.

There were rumblings that Patriots coach Jerod Mayo extended both of Bill Belichick’s sons, Steve and Brian, job opportunities to stay in New England. But Steve’s upcoming interview could mean he’s looking to move in a different direction.

Washington is working to put a coaching staff around Jedd Fisch after Kalen DeBoer left for the University of Alabama as the replacement for legendary coach Nick Saban, who retired after the 2023 season.

Along with Steve Belichick, former Patriots running backs coach Vinnie Sunseri is also interviewing for a defensive coaching job at Washington.

A fresh start could be a good thing for Belichick as he continues to work his way through the coaching ranks.

The Patriots have already addressed the major staff positions with DeMarcus Covington being promoted as defensive coordinator, along with Alex Van Pelt being hired as offensive coordinator and Jeremy Springer being the special teams coaching hire.
