Stephon Castle’s fit with the San Antonio Spurs at point guard

Is this a potential match for the Spurs and Castle?

The rap on University of Connecticut combo guard Stephon Castle ahead of the 2024 NBA draft is that he wants to play point guard at the NBA level. The San Antonio Spurs are also reportedly on the hunt for one, but is this a potential match for the Spurs and Castle?

On one hand, Castle is still fairly raw offensively with an unproven jumper and little experience playing as a floor general. But on the other hand, he also defends as well as any backcourt player in this draft, and has the size and length to play up to small forward.

To take stock of his fit with San Antonio ahead of the big day coming up in a little less than a week now, the folks behind the “SSPN: A San Antonio Spurs Podcast” YouTube channel took a closer look at Castle.

Take a look at the clip embedded below to hear what they had to say.

Should the San Antonio Spurs take Stephon Castle or Rob Dillingham in the 2024 NBA draft?

Which of the two top guards in this draft better fits what San Antonio is looking for with their picks?

Should the San Antonio Spurs take Stephon Castle or Rob Dillingham in the 2024 NBA draft? The two guards could be taken by the Spurs with either of their lottery picks in this summer’s draft at Nos. 4 and 8, presuming they do not go another route to get a guard on the roster.

The champion University of Connecticut combo guard is a multipositional lockdown defender who needs to find his jumper, and the University of Kentucky floor general is a dangerous shooter who needs some work on the defensive end of the court. Which of the two top guards in this draft better fits what San Antonio is looking for with their picks?

The host of the “Locked On Spurs” podcast, Jeff Garcia, recently took some time with “Sweep The League” podcast host Rudy Campos to debate whether Castle or Dillingham make more sense for the Spurs.

Rob Dillingham is among the second group of players invited to the draft green room

Dillingham conducted his required combine testing on Friday, clearing the way for him to become eligible to be selected in the draft.

Former Kentucky guard Rob Dillingham reportedly conducted his required combine testing, clearing the way for him to become eligible to be selected in the 2024 NBA draft.

Dillingham wasn’t able to participate in on-court testing last month at the combine because of an ankle injury. He was cleared this week from the injury and completed the requirements in front of teams on Friday at the Los Angeles Lakers‘ practice facility.

The 19-year-old was among the second group of prospects who received invitations from the NBA to attend the draft in the green room on June 26-27 at the Barlcays Center in Brooklyn, New York, according to Jonathan Givony of ESPN.

Teams with first-round picks each year vote on the players they believe will be drafted early, typically the top 20-25 prospects. Last year, 25 prospects were invited to the green room and only one wasn’t selected in the first round (Rayan Rupert, 43rd overall pick).

Included in the second batch of invitations were Serbian guard Nikola Topić, Duke players Jared McCain and Kyle Filipowski, Miami forward Kyshawn George, USC guard Isaiah Collier, Baylor center Yves Missi and Kansas forward Johnny Furphy.

The first group of players invited to the green room included French players Zaccharie Risacher, Alex Sarr and Tidjane Salaün; UConn players Donovan Clingan and Stephon Castle; G League Ignite players Matas Buzelis and Ron Holland; and Kentucky guard Reed Sheppard.

The latest 2024 NBA mock draft from USA TODAY has Zaccherie Risacher to the Hawks at No. 1

USA TODAY has this French prospect going at No. 1 overall.

The Atlanta Hawks have the No. 1 pick in the 2024 NBA Draft but they are still reportedly in the information-gathering process.

In fact, per The Ringer’s Kevin O’Connor, the Hawks “have been unable to bring in top prospects” for workouts so far. While there is potentially some interest in UConn’s Donovan Clingan, French prospects Zaccharie Risacher and Alex Sarr are considered as the two most likely options for Atlanta.

Risacher and Sarr are widely viewed as the favorites for the No. 1 spot in this class, though in our first 2024 NBA mock draft after the lottery, we had Sarr as the first player off the board.

But in the latest mock draft from USA TODAY, however, Jeff Zillgitt and Scooby Axson predicted Risacher:

“Has the scoring ability, size, length, quickness and athleticism teams are seeking in today’s NBA. Quick release on catch-and-shoots, is able to create off the dribble and runs the court well.”

We still have a few weeks until Atlanta has to make a decision, and perhaps they could even trade the pick before it is all said and done.

Risacher, however, could give the Hawks a new identity if they choose to rebuild their roster or a fun complementary if they opt for building around Trae Young.

Do Spurs fans want San Antonio to select Stephon Castle and Tidjane Salaun in the 2024 NBA draft?

Would it make sense for the Spurs to take these two prospects in real life, however?

Do San Antonio Spurs fans want San Antonio to select Stephon Castle and Tidjane Salaun in the 2024 NBA draft?  A wing currently suiting up for France’s Cholet ball club and a champion combo guard from the University of Connecticut, the duo would be a pair of intriguing adds to the Spurs’ 2024-25 roster in their quest to build a real contender long term around French forward phenom Victor Wembanyama.

In a recent fan vote put together by the folks behind the “TSR Sports” YouTube channel, that duo were the preferred options for San Antonio at Nos. 4 and 8 in the draft lottery.

Would it make sense for the Spurs to take these two prospects in real life, however? Are there too many concerns to use the picks in the draft if the Spurs want to get better in a hurry?

Take a look at the clip embedded above for all the detail you need to know about such a situation.

Who are the point guard prospects in the 2024 NBA draft that the San Antonio Spurs ought to be keeping an eye on?

Could it make sense to take University of Connecticut guard Stephon Castle?

Who are the point guard prospects in the 2024 NBA draft that the San Antonio Spurs ought to be keeping an eye on? Armed with a pair of lottery picks at Nos. 4 and 8 plus two additional second round draft picks, the Spurs should be able to get their man in the draft if they elect to upgrade their floor general position via the draft instead of free agency or a trade.

Could it make sense to take University of Connecticut guard Stephon Castle? University of Kentucky guards Reed Sheppard or Rob Dillingham? And what about other point guards who pop in the range of the lottery?

To try to wrap their heads around the possibilities on the table for San Antonio in this summer’s draft, the folks behind the “SSPN: A San Antonio Spurs Podcast” YouTube channel put together a big board of all the point guard prospects the Spurs ought to be monitoring.

The latest 2024 NBA mock draft from CBS has Stephon Castle to the Rockets

CBS Sports has the national champion going to the Rockets.

The Houston Rockets will have a big decision to make when they are on the clock at No. 3 overall in the 2024 NBA Draft.

French prospects Alex Sarr and Zaccharie Risacher are considered the most likely players to hear their names called at No. 1 overall and No. 2 overall to the Hawks and to Wizards, though the order of who goes first is still debated and unclear.

In our first 2024 NBA mock draft after the lottery, we had Kentucky’s Reed Sheppard as the third player off the board. But in the latest mock draft from CBS Sports, NBA writer Colin Ward-Henninger had a different player off the board.

Here is what he wrote about UConn’s Stephon Castle, who won a national championship during his sole collegiate campaign:

“Do I think Castle is the third-best prospect in this class? No. However, the fit with the Rockets is too perfect to pass up. Ideally they’d like a better shooter here, but Castle’s versatility and defensive upside make him a perfect Ime Udoka player as Houston attempts to climb into the postseason picture. I could see Castle having a Josh Hart-like impact on winning from day one with plenty of other Rockets to run the show offensively.”

We still have a few weeks until Houston has to make a decision, but Castle makes a lot of sense as a player who could potentially provide an immediate help on the defensive on the floor.

It is worth noting that according to ESPN’s Jonathan Givony, however, the former UConn standout reportedly views himself as a point guard and may be avoiding workouts for teams with established point guards.

The Rockets have Fred VanVleet under contract for another year before a club option for 2024-25.

Can the San Antonio Spurs draft both Stephon Castle and Zaccharie Risacher?

Given both are frequently mocked as top five players in this cohort, it could require some skill.

Can the San Antonio Spurs draft both University of Connecticut champion guard Stephon Castle and JL Bourg small forward Zaccharie Risacher? The Spurs will be selecting at Nos. 4 and 8 in the 2024 NBA draft, so securing both Castle and Risacher is not out of the question, but given both are frequently mocked as top five players in this cohort, it could also require some skill.

Specifically, in cutting deals to move up in the draft if they want to be certain they get both. The other picks that the Spurs have in the draft (Nos. 35 and 48 in the draft’s second round) might be enough to seal the deal, but it could also require San Antonio to throw in future draft assets and perhaps also younger talent.

The folks behind the “TSR Sports” YouTube channel recently put together a clip exploring how it might go down.

Take a look at the video embedded above to hear what they had to say for yourself.

Stephon Castle goes to Spurs at pick No. 4 in mock draft

In a recent NBA mock draft, the San Antonio Spurs picked up UConn guard Stephon Castle.

The San Antonio Spurs have two top-10 picks in this year’s draft. With them, they have an opportunity to add solid young talent next to Victor Wembanyama. In ESPN’s latest mock draft, they have the Spurs selecting UConn guard Stephon Castle with the fourth pick.

“The Spurs have been exploring all options with their two top-10 picks as they enter a critical offseason,” wrote Jeremy Woo. “With Victor Wembanyama on a superstar-level trajectory, San Antonio has an opportunity to accelerate its path toward the playoffs, whether that’s via the draft, trades or other means. The biggest roster need is at point guard, and rival teams have connected the Spurs to the Cleveland Cavaliers’ Darius Garland as they work to revamp the team.

“Keeping both these picks and taking multiple swings in the draft is also an attractive path, with the challenge being nailing the right pairing of players who will fit together with Wembanyama. San Antonio has demonstrated strong interest in Castle, who might well land here if the Spurs stay put. Castle’s two-way versatility, playmaking potential and size give him attractive upside, and also make him an easy player to pair with whomever the Spurs draft at No. 8.”

Castle’s upside at the point guard position makes him a very intriguing target for the Spurs.

Mock draft has Spurs taking Stephon Castle with No. 8 pick again

In this mock draft, the San Antonio Spurs picked up UConn guard Stephon Castle with the eighth pick.

With two top-10 picks in the 2024 NBA Draft, the San Antonio Spurs should be able to bring in some solid young prospects to help Victor Wembanyama move forward into the future with a chance to be great. Travis Branham of CBS Sports wrote a mock draft that has the Spurs taking Stephon Castle with the eighth pick. And it’s not the first time this has been mocked.

“The Spurs are building a roster around superstar Victor Wembanyama and want to add young talent at No. 8 to grow alongside their Frenchman,” Branham wrote. “While Castle isn’t the best available on the board, there’s a lot to like about his upside. He displayed versatility at UConn in 2023-24 and under the Spurs’ development program, has a chance to be San Antonio’s point guard of the future.”

Castle could be a solid point guard at the NBA level, and it would make sense for the Spurs to take a chance on him.

If they can also nail their fourth pick, snagging Castle at eight would be a good idea.
