Tennessee Titans place Stephen Gostkowski on Reserve/COVID-19 List

Stephen Gostkowski of the Titans has landed on the Reserve/COVID-19 list

The Tennessee Titans are coming off a huge loss to the Green Bay Packers. They were hit with another loss on Monday as kicker Stephen Gostkowski has been placed on the Reserve/COVID-19 list.

Gostkowski has made 18-of-26 field goals in 2020, and hit on 46-of-48 extra-point attempts.

The Titans face the Houston Texans on Sunday with their playoff hopes on the line.

It bears watching carefully if Gostkowski’s situation clears up in time for him to return for the regular-season finale or if the Titans need to find another kicker.

Titans’ Mike Vrabel: Stephen Gostkowski is the kicker ‘as of right now’

The Titans do have another option at kicker for Week 11.

The Tennessee Titans once again have a problem with their kicker in 2020, as Stephen Gostkowski has been the model of inconsistency and has missed a league-high eight field goal attempts this season.

Gostkowski’s most recent miss came in Week 10 and stopped the Titans from pulling to within one score when they were trailing 27-17 in the fourth quarter of Thursday’s loss to the Indianapolis Colts.

As head coach Mike Vrabel noted on Monday when speaking to the media, the Titans do have another option on their practice squad in Giorgio Tavecchio, who was signed by the team last week.

However, Vrabel says that “as of right now” Tennessee is sticking with Gostkowski, according to Jim Wyatt of Titans Online.

“As of today, right now, we have one (kicker) on the practice squad, Tavecchio, who is kicking,” Vrabel said. “But as of Monday, at 10:36, Stephen would be our kicker as of right now.”

Of course, this could change in the days ahead, as Vrabel’s response certainly doesn’t cement Gostkowski’s status moving forward.

The Titans do have the option of making Gostkowski inactive and elevating Tavecchio from the practice squad for the Week 11 game against the Baltimore Ravens.

With this approach, the Titans could give Tavecchio a look while also being able to hold on to the veteran kicker just in case Tavecchio doesn’t work out.

With the way Gostkowski has played through nine games, this is an avenue the team should explore.

Titans’ Mike Vrabel: ‘We have to evaluate’ the kicker position

Gostkowski missed his league-leading eighth field goal on Thursday night.

Tennessee Titans kicker Stephen Gostkowski missed yet another field goal during the Week 10 loss to the Indianapolis Colts on Thursday night, making his already hot seat even hotter.

Gostkowski made one of his two field goal attempts from 50 yards out, but missed on another attempt from 44 yards, which would have pulled the Titans to within one score even with all of their struggles.

It was a microcosm of Gostkowski’s season thus far, as the veteran has been money from 50-plus yards, but shaky from everywhere else. He’s a putrid 2-for-7 on field goals from 40 to 49 yards.

The veteran kicker’s eight misses on the season are the most in the NFL and he is now tied for the most failed attempts by a Titans kicker since 2001.

When speaking to the media on Friday, head coach Mike Vrabel admitted that it was time to take a closer look at the kicker position, which is the first time he has deviated from expressing confidence in Gostkowski.

The Titans do have another option if they want to go that route after the team signed Giorgio Tavecchio to the practice squad during the week.

If the Titans don’t want to totally give up on Gostkowski just yet, they could make him inactive for Week 11 and elevate Tavecchio from the practice squad in order to give him a look.

Titans GM Jon Robinson talks Vic Beasley, Desmond King, much more

Jon Robinson gave some insight into the Titans’ recent moves.

Tennessee Titans general manager Jon Robinson spoke to the media on Wednesday morning via Zoom and had a ton of topics to go over after the team made some big moves on Tuesday.

Among those moves was the decision to release cornerback Johnathan Joseph and long snapper Beau Brinkley, and the team notified outside linebacker Vic Beasley that he’d be released on Wednesday.

While it was obvious why the team made those moves, Robinson gave a little more insight into them, as well as revealing the inner-workings of what went into signing Beasley and why he was late to camp.

On top of that, Robinson shared his thoughts on the progress of 2020 first-round pick and offensive tackle, Isaiah Wilson, as well as what he thinks about outside linebacker Jadeveon Clowney and the addition of cornerback Desmond King II, who was acquired via trade on Monday.

Here’s what Robinson had to say about all of those topics:

Titans’ Stephen Gostkowski reacts to missing game-tying FG

Gostkowski’s miss has not shaken the confidence of his head coach.

Despite all of the ugly that was the Tennessee Titans’ Week 7 performance against the Pittsburgh Steelers, head coach Mike Vrabel’s squad still had an opportunity to push the game into overtime near the end of regulation.

Down 27-24, kicker Stephen Gostkowski lined up for a 45-yard attempt that would have tied the game up and sent it to overtime — and there was a great deal of confidence that he’d make it after booting a 51-yard attempt through the uprights earlier in the game.

However, Gostkowski’s kick went wide right and denied the Titans the chance to get an extra quarter with the Steelers.

Following the game, Gostkowski said he felt confident prior to the kick, he just didn’t get it done, per Paul Kuharsky.

“I had an opportunity to tie the game up. I felt pretty good all game, and came out there and it went right down the middle and faded to the right,” Gostkowski said. “I’ll have to look at it. Just very disappointed to let the team down like that. I was confident going out there but didn’t get it done. Just not very good right now.”

Gostkowski’s miss did not hurt the confidence Vrabel has in him, though, as the Titans head coach said he was “confident that he’ll make the next one.”

Gostkowski certainly had his issues early on this season, but has been solid since then and has come through clutch for the Titans with three game-winning field goals in six games.

This was just another one of those days for the veteran, who along with his team will look to rebound against the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 8.

Steelers survive Titans’ charge as Gostkowski misses late FG

Stephen Gostkowski missed a late field goal that would have tied the game and Pittsburgh downed Tennessee.

The Pittsburgh Steelers are 6-0. The Tennesse Titans are 5-1 after a thriller in Nashville Sunday that saw Stephen Gostkowski miss a 46-yard field goal in the final minute as the Steelers held on for a 27-24 victory.

The Titans’ final drive had been set up by an interception of Ben Roethlisberger in the end zone.

Ryan Tannehill led the Titans’ drive, which was hurt by an intentional grounding penalty and 10-second runoff.

Gostkowski has been perfect from 50 and outside but has had issues inside that distance. It came back to bite him again as his kick slid right and sealed the Titans’ first loss.

Ben Roethlisberger seemed surprised.

It avoided the end of this amazing streak.

Titans’ Stephen Gostkowski named AFC Special Teams Player of the Month

Perhaps no player in the NFL has seen a bigger turnaround in the first month of the season than Stephen Gostkowski.

Perhaps no player in the NFL has seen a bigger turnaround through the first month of the 2020 season than Tennessee Titans kicker, Stephen Gostkowski, who has been named the AFC Special Teams Player of the Month.

In Week 1, Gostkowski missed his first three field goal attempts and an extra point in the game against the Denver Broncos, which led us to believe that Tennessee’s kicking woes from 2019 would continue.

However, Gostkowski went on to make his final try of the night, which was also the game-winner, and hasn’t missed any of the eight field goals he’s attempted since.

In Week 3, Gostkowski went 6-for-6, keeping the Titans in the game, but he also nailed the game-winner, leading to his being named the AFC Special Teams Player of the Week.

In all, Gostkowski is 9-for-12 on the young season and has made a game-winning kick in each of the Titans’ three victories. His nine total makes are already more than Tennessee kickers had in all of 2019.

While things can certainly change, it’s safe to say the veteran kicker has at least instilled some confidence in Tennessee’s field goal unit again, something that didn’t exist at all last season.

Titans’ Stephen Gostkowski named AFC Special Teams Player of the Week

Stephen Gostkowski’s foot kept the Titans in the game in Week 3.

Tennessee Titans kicker Stephen Gostkowski has been named the AFC Special Teams Player of the Week for his performance on Sunday against the Minnesota Vikings.

In that game, Gostkowski made all six of his field goal attempts, three of which came from 50-plus yards out. As Tennessee’s offense stalled in the first half, Gostkowski’s leg kept the Titans in the game.

His 55-yard make with under two minutes left to play proved to be the game-winner, his third of the young season.

It has been quite the turnaround for Gostkowski, who missed three field goals and an extra point in Week 1. Since then, the veteran has made all nine of his attempts, which is more makes than Titans kickers had all of last season.

While we’re always hesitant to say the Titans’ kicking game is saved after what happened last season, there’s no question that Gostkowski has provided more stability already than Tennessee had in 2019.

Watch: Every Stephen Gostkowski FG from Titans’ Week 3 win

Check out every field goal Stephen Gostkowski hit for the Titans in Week 3.

Tennessee Titans kicker Stephen Gostkowski had himself a day during the team’s 31-30 Week 3 victory over the Minnesota Vikings at U.S. Bank Stadium on Sunday.

Gostkowski was a perfect 6-for-6 on the afternoon, and it was his leg that kept the Titans in the game while the offense struggled to finish drives with touchdowns during the first half.

The veteran wasn’t just making chip shots, either. He nailed three field goals of 50-plus yards, including a clutch game-winner with under two minutes to play.

Here’s a look at every single kick Gostkowski made on Sunday.

[lawrence-related id=45990]

With six makes in Week 3 against the Vikings, Gostkowski now has nine on the season, one more than the Titans had in all of 2019.

It has been quite the turnaround for the 36-year-old. Before hitting the game-winner in Week 1, fans were ready to run Gostkowski out of town, and who can blame them after last season.

However, Gostkowski has recovered nicely since then and has given the Titans’ field goal unit something it didn’t have all of last season: stability.

Tennessee Titans’ Stephen Gostkowski reacts to epic Week 3 performance

Stephen Gostkowski was easily the Player of the Game for the Titans in Week 3.

Through the first three games, nobody on the Tennessee Titans’ roster has had a bigger swing from bad to good than kicker Stephen Gostkowski.

After missing his first three field goals in a Titans uniform in the season-opener, Gostkowski has nailed all nine of his attempts since then, including three game-winners.

In Week 3, Gostkowski easily posted his best game. Not only did he hit the game-winner once again, but he nailed all six of his field goal attempts, three of which came from 50-plus yards, and he was the reason the Titans were able to stay in the game with the offense stalling on drives.

After the game, the veteran, who we chose as our Player of the Game for Week 3, said he’s going to take some time to enjoy his epic performance.

Gostkowski went on to explain how important it is to move on from bad showings like the one he had in Week 1.

Could Gostkowski’s recent success be related to his socks? Who knows, but he hasn’t put them on since the opener and it seems to be working for him.

With nine made field goals through three games, Gostkowski already has more makes than the plethora of kickers the Titans ran out on the field in 2019 combined.

Granted, there’s a long road ahead for the Titans with 13 games left in the regular season, but for now it looks like the kicking issues that plagued the team last season have been put to bed.
