Big Ten football news: Former Rutgers football player Stephen Belichick jokingly trolls his father: ‘I have a job and he doesn’t’

Stephen Belichick gets in a good zinger on his father, Bill Belichick.

Stephen Belichick, a former NFL assistant coach who was a long snapper at Rutgers, expertly trolled his father on Wednesday. And for those who don’t know, his father is former NFL head coach Bill Belichick, who is arguably the greatest coach of all time.

Now the defensive coordinator at Washington, Stephen Belichick comes to his new job in the Big Ten with plenty of experience. He was a standout lacrosse player at Rutgers who spent the 2011 season a long snapper for Rutgers football head coach Greg Schiano.

From there, he transitioned to coaching with the New England Patriots and spent 2019 as the defensive backs coach and the last four years as the outside linebackers coach.

On Wednesday, Stephen Belichick was asked about the similarities he shares with his father, who won six Super Bowls with the Patriots. Bill Belichick left the Patriots this offseason after over two decades with the organization.

“We definitely have similarities. I got a job and he doesn’t,” Stephen Belichick said on Wednesday during a press conference at Washington.

“He knows that. I look up to my dad, he’s a mentor to me but I’m myself…I’m excited to get on the field, work with these guys, work with the kids and recruit kids. I’m going to be myself and not try to be him.”

Stephen Belichick is part of the new staff at Washington under head coach Jedd Fisch. Like Stephen Belichick (Summit, New Jersey), Fields was also born in New Jersey.

Fisch attended Hanover Park High School (East Hanover, New Jersey) where he played tennis.

Rutgers football big board 2.0: Who will be the next linebackers coach?

Some names to keep an eye on to be the next linebackers coach at Rutgers.

The Rutgers football search for a new linebackers coach is set to enter its third week, and RutgersWire has updates to the coaching big board for the open position.

No hire has been made yet to replace C.J. Hetherman, who left to become the defensive coordinator at Minnesota. Hetherman will be tough to replace, given that he was a gifted coach and communicator and a strong recruiter.

That of course certainly doesn’t mean that Rutgers isn’t on the move and that head coach Greg Schiano isn’t trying to line up a coach.

Scroll down and check out who made the RutgersWire big board (2.0) to be the next linebackers coach with the Scarlet Knights. There are a few internal candidates for the role as well as a far-fetched name or two.

Corey Hetherman is poised to join Minnesota as their defensive coordinator, leaving a potential hole for Rutgers football.

As a linebackers coach, Hetherman was an asset to Rutgers. He was an intense personality but was a thorough and well-prepared assistant who held the linebackers group to a high standard and level.

Replacing Hetherman won’t be easy. He did a solid job of recruiting in addition to being a very strong coach from a technique perspective.

Rutgers has several options within their coaching staff if they want to replace from within. But there are some very good options outside the program as well.

Now, before we get to the list, keep in mind that it is just a list. Some of the names aren’t realistic. Some will have no interest. A few simply aren’t ready.

But as with the hiring of offensive line coach Pat Flaherty last year, doing due diligence can pay off. Rutgers landed a tremendous coach in Flaherty with huge experience. So this list reflects a wide range of possible candidates.

So have fun. And relax. It is just a list.

Rutgers football: Greg Schiano on New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick

Rutgers football head coach Greg Schiano opens up on his relationship with New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick.

Greg Schiano counts himself fortunate to have developed a close relationship with one of the all-time great coaches in NFL history. A relationship where Schiano says he has been able to learn from Bill Belichick quite a bit.

Belichick is set for season No. 23 as head coach of the New England Patriots. He is very much the dean of the NFL, having won eight Super Bowls throughout his career.

Six of those Super Bowls came as head coach of the Patriots.

In a recent interview with NBC Sports reporter Kathyrn Tappen, Schiano dove into the topic of his connection with Belichick. It began in 2011 when Stephen Belichick was a longer snapper on the Rutgers football team coached by Schiano.

Stephen had played lacrosse at Rutgers before using a final season of college eligibility to join the football team.

“I’m really fortunate that Bill has been very generous with me, with information, with access. I’ve learned so much. Stephen, his son, went to Rutgers and was on the lacrosse team. Later, he was a long snapper for us his final year, his fifth year,” Schiano told NBC Sports.

“That gave me the opportunity to really get to know coach. He has shared and been so generous with his time, his knowledge. He’s been a big help.

“Hopefully, we’ve returned it with some players that have helped win some games in New England, which I’m proud of. I think there’s a lot of similarities with the way the programs are run. I think our guys fit in well there.”

Stephen is currently the outside linebackers coach with the Patriots.
