Steph Curry stats: 40 point performance vs. Cavs helps secure NBA scoring lead

After dropping 40 points with nine triples against the Cavs, Steph Curry secured the NBA scoring lead with 29.5 points per game.

Following a 37 point effort to lead the Golden State Warriors to a blowout win over Kevin Durant, James Harden and the Brooklyn Nets, Steph Curry returned to Cleveland for a matchup against the Cavaliers.

Despite a flurry of injuries to core players like Evan Mobley and Collin Sexton, the Cavaliers didn’t back down to the league-best Warriors to start the game.

Behind Darius Garland and Dean Wade, the Cavaliers pushed to a 13 point advantage heading into the fourth quarter. As the Cavaliers surged to a potential upset victory, the Warriors went cold. Through three quarters, the Warriors shot 9-of-29 from long distance.

However, in the fourth quarter, the Warriors found their rhythm.

Along with help from Golden State’s fierce defense, Curry notched 20 points on 8-of-12 shooting from the floor with four triples as the Warriors stormed to a comeback win, 104-89.

Curry finished the contest with a game-high 40 points on 15-of-27 shooting from the field with six assists and four rebounds in 35 minutes. The MVP frontrunner drilled nine 3-pointers on 16 attempts from deep.

Through 15 games, Curry had hit nine 3-pointers in four games, including three games in his last four. Curry has also recorded 35 or more points in six games already this season.

Following the game against Cleveland, Curry moved into the top spot in NBA scoring lead. Golden State’s point guard is currently averaging a league-best 29.5 points per game. Curry’s former teammate Kevin Durant trails him with 28.6 points per contest.

After averaging 32 points per game in the 2020-21 campaign, Curry is the reigning NBA scoring champ. While the season is still young, Curry looks on a similar pace in 2021-22.

Below is a look at some of the highlights from Thursday’s contest.
