Steelers interview 49ers director of pro personnel for GM job

The Steelers interviewed #49ers director of pro personnel Ran Carthon for GM job.

The Steelers are doing an exhaustive search for their next general manager that included an interview with 49ers director of pro personnel Ran Carthon. He was one of three interviews Pittsburgh announced Saturday.

Carthon has been in the 49ers’ front office since John Lynch took over as the general manager in 2017. Before that he was Rams’ director of player personnel from 2012-16. From 2008-11 he was a pro scout with the Falcons.

San Francisco has managed to keep their front office mostly intact over the last five seasons. Vice president of player personnel Adam Peters has interviewed for multiple GM jobs the last two offseasons but hasn’t left the Bay Area. Former VP of player personnel Martin Mayhew was hired last offseason to take the GM spot with the Washington Commanders.

Per ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Carthon is one of 12 candidates interviewed by the Steelers as they aim to lign up a replacement GM Kevin Colbert who’s stepping down after the 2022 draft.

Should Pittsburgh hire Carthon the 49ers would land a pair of third-round picks via the NFL’s new resolution aimed at improving minority hiring in head coach and general manager positions. Those two selections would land in the 2023 and 2024 drafts.
