Steelers RB Najee Harris reacts to captain honors snub: ‘We’re not tripping’

Pittsburgh Steelers running back Najee Harris was a good sport about not being named one of the four 2023 team captains.

Athletes are ultra-competitive. It pumps through their veins and is part of what makes them good at what they do. So for any of them to play like stats, recognition doesn’t matter — they’re lying.

But Najee Harris, who wasn’t among the players voted by his teammates as a captain for the 2023 season, brushed it off.

“Kenny’s the quarterback. Kenny’s the guy,” Harris told Pittsburgh Post-Gazette’s Brian Batko. “I have no issue with that. I don’t think anybody has an issue with there being one captain. As long as we win, we’re not tripping. It’s all a team sport.”

There’s no arguing it’s a team sport, and props to Harris for being a great teammate, but it had to hurt his pride a little bit after being one of the two offensive captains in 2022.

Mike Tomlin highlighted each captain in his weekly press conference on Tuesday and why Kenny Pickett was the sole offensive representative.

“[Kenny Pickett] being the lone captain on offense is obviously no disrespect to the leadership of others, but probably more reflection of everyone’s feel of his growth and development, not only as a player but as a leader within this collective, the team’s view of him and his growth and development,” Tomlin explained.

Not only is Pickett a captain in his first season as a starter, but it says even more about him that Ben Roethlisberger wasn’t voted captain until his fifth season.

Mike Tomlin speaks on Najee Harris missing from captain honors

During his weekly press conference, Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin spoke about why Kenny Pickett was the only offensive captain named.

The Pittsburgh Steelers named team captains for the 2023 season yesterday, and one player who once received the honor did not this time around.

Najee Harris, one of two offensive captains last year, was left off this year.

But Mike Tomlin implied not to read too much into it, saying it’s more about Kenny Pickett being named than Harris not.

“[Kenny Pickett] being the lone captain on offense is obviously no disrespect to the leadership of others, but probably more reflection of everyone’s feel of his growth and development, not only as a player but as a leader within this collective, the team’s view of him and his growth and development,” Tomlin said during his first press conference of the season on Tuesday.

What’s interesting is in 2022, Pittsburgh tabbed five players as captains, but only four this year. His teammates could’ve easily voted in Harris but was not.

Steelers announce 2020 team captains

Here are the Steelers team captains for 2020.

[jwplayer omiGPolx-ThvAeFxT]

Just moments after announcing the opening week depth chart for the 2020 NFL season, the Pittsburgh Steelers have announced their team captains as well. Here are your Steelers captains for the upcoming season.

Offense: Ben Roethlisberger and Maurkice Pouncey

Defense: Cameron Heyward and T.J. Watt

Special Teams: Jordan Dangerfield

No surprises here. Big Ben and Pouncey have been a constant on this team for such a long time and the return of Roethlisberger after missing last season makes this one even more fitting.

Heyward and Watt are the leaders and best players on arguably the best defense in the NFL. This is a nice touch after Heyward getting his massive new contract on the same day. This is Watt’s first time as a captian.

Dangerfield is such a constant on special teams despite having very little impact on defense after all these seasons. He’s finally being rewarded as captain for the first time.
