Pittsburgh Steelers at Cincinnati Bengals odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Sunday’s Pittsburgh Steelers at Cincinnati Bengals Week 1 odds and lines, with expert NFL picks, predictions and best bets.

The Cincinnati Bengals welcome the Pittsburgh Steelers to Paycor Stadium Sunday. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. ET (CBS). Below, we analyze Tipico Sportsbook‘s lines around the Steelers vs. Bengals odds, and make our expert NFL picks and predictions.

The Bengals are coming off their 1st Super Bowl appearance since 1988 and they’ll look to avoid a hangover similar to that of their opponent — the Los Angeles Rams, who were blown out 31-10 Thursday by the Buffalo Bills.

The Bengals are led by star QB Joe Burrow and standout WR Ja’Marr Chase. They added 3 starting offensive linemen in free agency and have retained the key parts of their defense as well.

The Steelers, on the other hand, saw their long-time QB Ben Roethlisberger retire. He’ll, at least for now, be replaced by QB Mitchell Trubisky and not 1st-round pick QB Kenny Pickett.

Pittsburgh’s offense will be led by RB Najee Harris while the defense is led by DE T.J. Watt, one of the best pass-rushers in the NFL. Pittsburgh is projected to finish last in the AFC North.

Steelers at Bengals picks and predictions

Prediction

Bengals 24, Steelers 20

Money line

PASS.

The Steelers don’t have the talent to keep pace and were destroyed on the road in this environment last season.

It could be worth a small play to back Mike Tomlin if you’re high on the Watt-led defense, but ultimately, I’d look toward the spread to back Pittsburgh.

Against the spread

BET PITTSBURGH +6.5 (-110).

In 16 years, Tomlin has not had a losing season as a head coach. While that may not matter much here, it goes to show that he’s an elite coach, and elite coaches know how to keep games close.

The Bengals won 41-10 at home last season against Pittsburgh, but with it being 31-3 at half, Harris received just 8 carries and Roethlisberger had 2 picks. Pittsburgh should have more success in the pass game with Trubisky.

Also, the Bengals started off slow last season, losing in their home opener to the Minnesota Vikings. With Burrow and Tee Higgins not playing the preseason, a slow start seems almost inevitable.

The Steelers had a league-high 55 sacks last season, and while the Bengals did add 3 new linemen, they haven’t played together in an NFL game yet and didn’t get reps in the preseason.

With a rookie also starting on the line, there could be some possession-changing false starts or missed blocks. Given the strength of the Steelers defense, I like them to keep it within a touchdown.

Over/Under

LEAN UNDER 44.5 (-108).

That last sentence is why I favor the under in this matchup as well. The Steelers should want to take away the Bengals receivers and drop into zone with multiple safeties.

It could open up RB Joe Mixon and a rush attack that had 198 yards at home last season against the Steelers. If that’s the case, expect the clock to tick down in a hurry as Harris will get the bulk of the load for the Steelers.

The Bengals have an underrated defense that was the real difference-maker in their Super Bowl run. S Jessie Bates hasn’t missed a beat since his hold out, and they’ll add several new faces to the defensive line.

Pittsburgh was 7-10-1 while Cincinnati was 8-13 (playoff included) O/U last season, so both sides were better at cover the Under. Considering the style of the Steelers and likely pace of the game, I like the Under here.

Pittsburgh Steelers at Cincinnati Bengals odds, picks and prediction

Analyzing Sunday’s Pittsburgh Steelers at Cincinnati Bengals odds and lines, with expert NFL picks, predictions and best bets.

The Pittsburgh Steelers (5-4-1) travel to Paul Brown Stadium to take on the Cincinnati Bengals (6-4) Sunday in Week 12. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. ET. Below, we look at the Steelers vs. Bengals odds and lines, and make our best NFL picks, predictions and bets.

The Bengals are coming off a dominant 32-13 win over the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 11. However, with losses to the New York Jets and Chicago Bears it’s difficult to trust them.

They’re led offensively by star QB Joe Burrow and rookie WR Ja’Marr Chase. They enter as solid favorites having had a successful season despite those bad losses. The Bengals haven’t swept the Steelers in the regular season since 2009.

The Steelers will finally get their top defenders back as S Minkah Fitzpatrick and LB T.J. Watt are both expected to play. Pittsburgh needs a big-time win to stay in playoff contention.

The Steelers are led on offense by RB Najee Harris who has had 22 or more carries in five of their last six games. He’ll likely be featured heavily Sunday.

Steelers at Bengals odds, lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Steelers 24, Bengals 23

Money line

“LEAN” to the STEELERS (+155) because they’re getting healthier and should be able to run all over Cincinnati.

The Bengals allowed over 400 yards through the air to Jets QB Mike White and over 150 yards on the ground to the RB Kareem Hunt-less Cleveland Browns in their last three games.

While they thrashed the Raiders, that was more based on the ineptitude of Las Vegas. It should be the opposite for Pittsburgh, who should’ve easily defeated the Los Angeles Chargers had their full array of players been healthy.

The Bengals are just 2-2 at home, having won four of six on the road. They’ll again by short their second-best cornerback Trae Waynes which could hamper them defensively. Waynes has been on injured reserve since early October.

Veteran QB Ben Roethlisberger has had the Bengals’ number over the past decade, and as noted, the Bengals haven’t swept the Steelers since 2009. This should be a good showing from Big Ben.

Against the spread

BET on the STEELERS +3.5 (-112) for as much, if not more than, a money line wager.

The Steelers know this Bengals team. They’ll be ready for the speed of Chase and the play of Burrow. They should be primed to take on another quality offense and succeed after seeing the Chargers last week.

Throwing will be tough for the Burrow and the Bengals as Watt is expected back and will play a huge part in this game. He’ll pressure a Bengals offensive line that was ranked the 25th-best in the NFL by PFF prior to the season’s commencement.

Watt and DE Cameron Heyward will wreak havoc on the Bengals line. While they can return the favor against a weak Steelers line, the faith should be put in the team with the veteran quarterback.

Over/Under

“LEAN” to the OVER 43.5 (-117) as the better side here.

Big Ben had two interceptions and Harris ran for just 40 yards the last time these two teams took the field. That’s more than likely not going to happen again. That’s the only time this season the Steelers have scored 10 or fewer.

Both teams are allowing over 21 points per game. This will be a tough total if one team has a sluggish day, but with all the talent on the offensive side of the ball, I expect points on the board.

However, I’d still look to the Steelers spread for the best value.

Steelers at Bengals: Game notes

  • The 2-10-1 Bengals on Monday night? The primetime slot made sense when the schedule was released because No. 1 overall draft pick Joe Burrow would be QBing the Bengals. Unfortunately, he suffered a season-ending injury in Week 11. Cincinnati will start QB Ryan Finley (75 passing yards on 10-for-19 attempts, 0 TDs, 2 INTs, 4 appearances with 0 starts this season).
  • The Pittsburgh Steelers are coming off a second consecutive loss after starting the season 11-0. They dropped a 26-15 decision at the Buffalo Bills in the Week 14 Sunday Night Football game as 2-point underdogs. A real concern is the running game, which only produced 47 yards vs. the Bills.
  • The Steelers already clinched a playoff berth. They trail the Kansas City Chiefs (13-1) for the AFC’s No. 1 seed, and lead the Cleveland Browns (10-4) by 1½ games in the AFC North. The Steelers could easily lose their final two regular-season contests. They host the Indianapolis Colts (10-4) next week and close at Cleveland in Week 17, which could decide the division title.
  • Pittsburgh has recorded a sack in an NFL-record 70 consecutive regular-season games.
  • The Bengals, who were 3-point underdogs, lost at home to the Dallas Cowboys 30-7 last week. The Bengals have lost 5 in a row after a hard-to-figure 31-20 upset victory at the Tennessee Titans in Week 8. They currently would have the No. 3 overall draft pick next year. The Jacksonville Jaguars and New York Jets are both 1-13.
  • The Steelers have won the last 10 vs. the Bengals, including a 36-10 victory at home in Week 10 as 6.5-point favorites behind QB Ben Roethlisberger’s 333 passing yards with 4 TDs. The Bengals last beat the Steelers Nov. 1, 2015 – 16-10 at Pittsburgh.

Betting stats:

  • ATS: Steelers 8-5 | Bengals 7-6
  • O/U: Steelers 4-7-2 | Bengals 5-7-1

Steelers at Bengals: Key injuries

Steelers

  • RB James Conner (quadriceps) questionable
  • OL Kevin Dotson (pectoral) out

Bengals

  • QB Brandon Allen (knee) out
  • LB Logan Wilson (ankle) out

Steelers at Bengals: Odds, betting lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Steelers 28, Bengals 10

Money line (?)

PASS. The Steelers will win, but betting -1000 is too risky. Imagine how Los Angeles Rams ML (-2000) backers felt Sunday after losing to the New York Jets – who were 17-point dogs.

Against the spread (?)

PITTSBURGH -14.5 (-110) is the play. The Bengals are just what the doctor ordered.

Over/Under (?)

The UNDER 40.5 (-110) is the STRONGEST PLAY – 1½ times your usual wager. I don’t see how the Bengals will score. They have failed to put up at least 18 points in each of their past five games, and now they’re going with their No. 3 QB. Meanwhile, Pittsburgh failed to score at least 20 points in its last three games.
