Starfield trailer shows off gameplay and spacefaring adventures

The team that brought you Skyrim is back with another massive RPG.

After numerous development teases and one unfortunate delay, we finally got to see Starfield in action.

During the Xbox & Bethesda Games Showcase on Sunday, Starfield‘s first-ever gameplay trailer was shown off. The massive, new-generation RPG is taking everything that made Skyrim a classic and dialing it up to 11. There’s no denying that while this is a new franchise, Bethesda Game Studios’ DNA is on full display here. Hopefully, with fewer janky animations and bug-riddled quests this time.

Check out the Starfield gameplay trailer for yourself below. If that’s all in-engine, then this will be one technical powerhouse of a game. Get comfortable too, since this demo is a long watch.

Starfield is coming out next year for Xbox Series X|S and PC, but there’s no hard release date yet. It’s coming day-one to Game Pass, at least. Much to the chagrin of Todd Howard, who’s probably never living it down. Maybe his son will roast him again on our behalf.

Starfield delayed to 2023, alongside Redfall

Bethesda’s next big game, Starfield, has been delayed. The news comes via a Twitter post from the company, with the usual regrets and promises that it will make for the better game. Redfall, the next game from Arkane, is taking the same hit, and both will now launch in the “first half of 2023.”

Bethesda’s next big game, Starfield, has been delayed. The news comes via a Twitter post from the company, with the usual regrets and promises that it will make for the better game. Redfall, the next game from Arkane, is taking the same hit, and both will now launch in the “first half of 2023.”

Starfield’s promise to come out this year has looked rocky for a while, with the total lack of solid gameplay information and a release date promised a year ahead of time. Clearly they were going for something, but with the ludicrous size of these games and the persistant nature of the COVID-19 pandemic delays, it’s unsurprising.

Redfall has had similarly little to show for its time announced, with just the original cinematic trailer released. Both are now getting a little extra time to polish up. Both are described as their “most ambitious” projects to date, and a separate tweet from Arkane Austin makes similar statements.

This all comes just a few weeks ahead of Summer Game Fest and the Microsoft/Bethesda conference on June 12. Everyone was expecting both games, especially Starfield, to make a big showing, which they presumably now will not.

See you at The Game Awards, folks.

Emmy-winning composer Inon Zur explains Starfield’s music

The latest developer diary for Bethesda’s scifi RPG is all about a galaxy of sounds.

Few composers working in the games industry are as well-known as Inon Zur. The award-winning composer is responsible for scoring titles like Crysis, Dragon’s Dogma, Fallout: New Vegas, Soul Calibur 5, and many more. He’s also working on Bethesda’s upcoming space-faring RPG Starfield.

On Tuesday, Bethesda released Starfield’s latest developer diary, featuring a discussion between Zur and audio director Mark Lampert. The two go over soundscapes in past Bethesda titles such as The Elder Scrolls: Oblivion and Fallout 4 while also explaining the creative process behind Starfield from an audio perspective, specifically how the music will react to the player’s actions.

“The way I looked at Starfield always is what I call ‘The Sanctified Triplet,’ which is, everything is streaming,” Zur says in the video. “Everything is changing, and everything is returning back. Here is your development, and then, ‘ta-da,’ so basically it presents itself, it develops, it goes back.”

Lampert chimes in with some additional insight, claiming the music works alongside gameplay in a circular flow. It’s well worth watching the entire video for yourself below.

There have been several Starfield video documentaries like this one thus far, covering expansive universes, awe-inspiring moments, robotic companions, and what sorts of factions are out there.

We still have no idea when Bethesda will show Starfield off, but it may happen this summer. Many were predicting the game would be at E3, but the show was canceled last month.

Meet Starfield’s chill robotic companion VASCO in new video

Space travel requires a dependable helping hand.

Space can be ruthless and unforgiving, which is why Starfield’s adorable robot companion VASCO will make interplanetary travel less lonely.

On Tuesday, Bethesda Game Studios released a behind-the-scenes trailer detailing VASCO, one of Starfield’s new companion characters. VASCO is an expeditionary robot that’ll aid you while traversing the stars.

This tiny friend is “a utilitarian heavy-industrial machine well-suited to the rigors of space travel,” Istvan Pely, lead artist on Starfield, says in the video. “Capable of traversing rough terrain, along with all survival gear, and payload capacity needed for extended overland journeys. VASCO does have defensive capabilities should the need arise, but his primary role is peaceful.”

Meet VASCO for yourself by watching the video below. There’s even some gameplay footage, unlike the last developer diary.

It looks like VASCO is a robotic pack mule of sorts. That’s good, though. Skyrim and Fallout 4 would’ve been better with someone to share the load, and it looks like Bethesda Game Studios knows that too.

Starfield is coming out on Nov. 11, 2022, for Xbox Series X|S and PC. Since Microsoft owns Bethesda now, it’s unlikely that Starfield will make it on PS5 — as will likely be the case with Elder Scrolls 6.

Starfield dev diary explains factions, worlds, and character creation

Bethesda reveals more about the highly-anticipated RPG.

Unlikely though it may seem, Starfield is coming out this year. As a (gentle) reminder of that fact, Bethesda’s new developer diary elaborates on the game’s rich universe.

Made for Wanderers, the latest episode in Starfield’s developer diary series, details various space-faring factions and how players will interact with NPCs. The session has design director Emil Pagilarulo, lead quest designer Will Shen, and game director Todd Howard (AKA the man behind Skyrim). This episode shows off a tiny bit of in-engine gameplay footage like past Starfield developer diaries. Blink, and you’ll miss it, though.

Watch Made for Wanderers for yourself below. There’s also a high-quality YouTube mirror here.

It’s not much, but Bethesda did clarify that we won’t see much from Starfield until this summer. As with Fallout 4 and Skyrim, the company likely won’t show the game off until release is a few months out. Honestly, this isn’t that long of a wait since Starfield is coming out on Nov. 11, 2022, for Xbox Series X|S and PC.

Starfield will be Bethesda’s first exclusive title for Xbox since the two are now under Microsoft’s banner. Many fans wonder if Elder Scrolls 6 will make it on PS5, and Xbox head Phil Spencer hinted it won’t.

The best RPGs of 2022 – the most exciting upcoming RPG games

Role-playing in 2022 is all about depth of experience.

What even is an RPG in 2022? Such has been the cross-pollination of genre elements over the last few generations that where you’d once have described a game with XP, an inventory and upgrade trees as classic RPG material, now those markers only narrow it down to ‘a video game’.

When it boils down to it, role-playing in 2022 is about depth of experience. Games that embark on vast narratives and give you some agency in them, whether that means your protagonist has a new pair of +5 charisma shoulder pads for the next big fight or their dialogue options actually change the course of events in the game world. A great modern RPG should take you on a journey and steep it in interconnected systems. Failing that, at the very least there should be the occasional cuirass or a chest that somebody has inexplicably left one gold coin in.

Starfield concept art teases frostbitten ice caverns

Pack some winter gloves.

One of the most anticipated video games of 2022 is unquestionably Bethesda’s Starfield, the open-world RPG  from the makers of Skyrim.

Although Starfield is due out next fall, we’ve yet to see it beyond  some vague teaser trailers. Given that Bethesda already said  we won’t get a good look at the game proper until next summer, the teasing won’t end anytime soon.

If nothing else, the new artwork Bethesda shared is pretty gorgeous. The company has talked a lot about Starfield  being a space-faring adventure with lots of planets to explore, and it seems like something with a particular frostbitten tinge is in store for players.

Check out the new ice caverns artwork for Starfield  for yourself below.

It has a particular aroma of the ice planet Hoth from Star Wars. Though just about everything with a scifi tinge and a cold locale is in that boat, too, I suppose. It’s kind of a  motif of video games set in space.

Starfield  will be exclusively on Xbox Series X|S and Windows PC when it releases in late 2022. As in par for the course of  upcoming Bethesda titles such as The Elder Scrolls 6  since Microsoft now owns the company.

Starfield has two ‘step out moments’ where you’re introduced to the world

In a new video, the Starfield developers discuss their approach to the game, comparing it to previous works.

It’s an important moment in any Bethesda Game Studios title – the moment where you leave the tutorial dungeon and step out into the sprawling, beautiful open world. According to game director Todd Howard, Starfield has two.

In a new video documenting the development process behind Bethesda’s upcoming spacefaring RPG, the developers discuss their approach to the game while comparing it to previous works and showing off some concept art.

During that chat, Todd Howard mentions that Starfield has “two step out moments”. Since Starfield is set in space, he could be referring to the first time you step out into the world of the starting planet and the first time you break through the atmosphere in your ship.

Elsewhere in the video, the developers talk about how Starfield will still be a Bethesda Game Studios-style experience, despite its ambition. You’ll be able to interact with props, uncover NPCs stories from the game’s rich environmental storytelling and create your own stories with its systemic mechanics.

Starfield is set for launch on Nov. 11, 2022. It’s coming to Xbox Series X/S and PC.

In the meantime, why not check out our list of the best RPGs. We’ll see much more of Starfield next summer.

Don’t expect more ‘Starfield’ until next summer

The sci-fi RPG is still a ways off.

We probably won’t get a good look at Starfield  until the summer of next year.

During a Reddit ask me anything with Todd Howard, game director and executive producer at Bethesda Game Studios, a question about what Starfield  brings to open-world RPGs was among the most upvoted comments. His answer was (unsurprisingly) coy.

“We prefer to just show it, which should be next summer,” Howard said  on Reddit. “We’re happy with the advancements we’ve been able to make, some of which you can see in the trailer shot in-game.”

Next summer would line up nicely with E3 2022, so maybe we’ll see more of Starfield  at Microsoft’s press conference by then. Though this is pure speculation on my part, mind you.

There’s was a teaser trailer for Starfield at E3 2021, which you can check out below. It has a couple of in-game shots but no actual gameplay.

A story trailer for Starfield called The Settled Systems came out back in October. Since then, though, there’s been next to no new information on the game. In that same Reddit thread, Howard admitted that his son roasted him over the lack of  Elder Scrolls 6. Then there’s Fallout 5,  which is also many years away — starting to notice a pattern here.

Bethesda explains why there’s still no sequel to ‘Skyrim’

Want Elder Scrolls 6? It’s still a long way off, unfortunately.

It’s been a decade since The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim came out and there’s still no sequel in sight. Though Todd Howard, director and executive producer at Bethesda, is finally opening up about what’s going on with Elder Scrolls 6, IGN  reported Tuesday

“Would you plan to have the kind of gap we’re having between Skyrim  and the follow-up? I can’t say that’s a good thing,” Howard said via IGN. “Do I wish I could wave a wand and the game we wanted to make just came out? Absolutely.”

Howard goes on to say there were several projects Bethesda Game Studios wanted to do before returning to the world of Tamriel. One of which being Fallout 76  and the other being the upcoming RPG Starfield

“We felt doing something like Starfield. We’d been wanting to do something else for a long time and play in a new universe, so if not now — I’m going back in time, we started right after Fallout 4, so 2015 — if not now, when? It felt like, if we didn’t do it then, the ‘when’ could be ‘never,” Howard said via IGN.

It seems like a pretty cut-and-dry answer: Bethesda wanted to work on something besides Elder Scrolls  for a bit. It’s understandable since RPGs with the scope of Skyrim  take several years to make. According to Howard, development on Starfield  began nearly six years ago, and we’ve still not even seen it! The story trailers are pretty sick, though.

Bethesda isn’t ramping up development on Elder Scrolls 6  until after Starfield  comes out on Nov. 11, 2022. So if you factor in that it took seven years for the scifi RPG to release, then Elder Scrolls  probably won’t see a new entry for a long, long time.

Elder Scrolls 6  might still be a long way off, but hey, maybe the Skyrim: Anniversary Edition  will scratch that open-world RPG itch for now? Probably not. Make sure to back up your mods for that re-release, by the way.
