Tekken 8 will support crossplay, director confirms

Katsuhiro Harada claims he always wanted to implement the feature, but several platforms were ‘at odds with each other.’

There’s no question that Tekken 8 is going to be massive, and it sounds like you’ll be able to play with friends regardless of whatever console or platform everyone is using.

On Saturday, Tekken franchise director Katsuhiro Harada took the time to answer a fan’s burning question about the possibility of Tekken 8 supporting crossplay (the functionality that allows you to play against others whether they’re on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, or PC).

“Crossplay? Of course,” Harada said on Twitter. “[By the way] when the previous generation consoles were released, I had already proposed crossplay between the two platformers. However, at that time, they were at odds with each other over their mutual interests (and [peer-to-peer] security [issues]) & repeatedly refused.”

Crossplay is pretty well a games industry standard by now, especially for an esports-centric title like Tekken 8. However, while Harada’s comment is promising, he didn’t specify whether or not Tekken 8 will have crossplay at release or if it’ll arrive in post-launch updates. We’ll just have to wait and see how this pans out!

In any event, longtime franchise fans have been clamoring for crossplay since Tekken 8‘s spectacular reveal last summer. Most consider Tekken to be among the very best fighting games – many of which already support crossplay – so it only makes sense for the eighth installment to follow suit.

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor’s final gameplay trailer is stunning

Cal Kestis can twirl a lightsaber with the best of them.

While the wait for Star Wars Jedi: Survivor is nearly over, there’s just enough time left to squeeze in one last trailer – this one should be enough to whet your appetite until launch.

On Sunday, the final gameplay trailer for Star Wars Jedi: Survivor premiered at Star Wars Celebration 2023. As you might expect, there’s plenty of footage where protagonist Cal Kestis takes on Imperial Stormtroopers, Battle Droids, AT-STs, Rancor, and many other iconic baddies from across the franchise – typical Jedi business.

Check out the trailer for yourself below. This one is pretty well free of any plot or story details, so don’t worry about spoilers too much.

The trailer’s most noteworthy moment is arguably those few shots featuring Coruscant – a massive capital city planet most famous from the Star Wars prequel trilogy. There’s already a lot of fan theorizing that Coruscant will be one of Star Wars Jedi: Survivor‘s explorable locales, though it’s hard to say for sure based on speculation alone.

The hype for Star Wars Jedi: Survivor is borderline palpable, particularly after its most recent story trailer – likely because Cal Kestis has become a well-established character within Disney’s Star Wars universe, which Respawn Entertainment is grateful for.

We’ll find out how it all comes together when Star Wars Jedi: Survivor releases on April 28, 2023, for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor director on Disney’s acceptance of Cal Kestis: ‘It’s amazing’

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor director Stig Asmussen talks to us about Disney’s acceptance of Respawn’s characters and universe.

Recently GLHF was invited to a new preview of Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, the sequel to Respawn Entertainment’s Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order from 2019. The game is bigger than before, offering more options to the player before the game even begins.

We spoke to game director Stig Asmussen and asked about how it feels to have their Jedi Cal Kestis and Respawn’s world embraced by Disney as a part of the wider Star Wars universe. “It’s amazing,” he replied.

[mm-video type=video id=01gw5x8c9m9z0gch8wa1 playlist_id=none player_id=01gp1x90emjt3n6txc image=https://images2.minutemediacdn.com/image/upload/video/thumbnail/mmplus/01gw5x8c9m9z0gch8wa1/01gw5x8c9m9z0gch8wa1-4c9adc96888b84bd47d94e0ae4330193.jpg]

“It’s certainly unexpected, it’s certainly welcome, and it’s not something that I ever dreamed of when we started the game. We were just happy to be working on a Star Wars game, and make something that – from a game standpoint – lives on in Star Wars lore.

“But to see that transcending into something that you can physically hold, like a Lego set with BD-1, and all these other opportunities we’ve been given, have just been magical. The team gets super fired up when we see it. It’s hard to describe.”

But this was far from a guarantee when Fallen Order first entered development – Respawn’s Jedi series could’ve begun and ended with one game, never to be mentioned at a theme park or referenced with a Lego set ever again. That’s not the case though — Cal Kestis has made his mark on the Star Wars universe, so you might think that there’s a bit more pressure to deliver on behalf of the team at Respawn Entertainment.

“Yeah, sort of,” Asmussen explained. “There are people whose job it is to look for opportunities within LucasFilm, and they will reach out to us where they see opportunities to work on, but honestly, we’re just so focused on the game. If we spent time trying to promote or pitch these ideas, we’d be losing sight of what our real task is.”

What’s probably most reassuring is it seems that BD-1 and Cal aren’t simply extra faces for Disney to mass-produce merchandise of, as Stig put it: “when opportunities do come up LucasFilm is super respectful. They share with us these potential ideas and concepts, and they respect that we’re the caretakers of these characters, and they’re going to live in the game first. Those are always good conversations to have.”

April 2023 game releases: Upcoming titles being released this month

Check out the best video games releasing this month.

March saw quite a few big game releases, including the remake of classic survival horror Resident Evil 4, plus a new Soulsike game and a couple of new releases for sports fans. Now April is poised to follow up with an equally good list of games.

A PlayStation timed exclusive is finally hitting the Xbox Series X|S, while Sony is giving away a fresh FPS game to all its PS Plus subscribers on day one. Nevertheless, the biggest two releases of the month are expected to be new entries in the Star Wars and Minecraft franchises.

Sports fans are finally getting that ultra-realistic golf sim after several delays and it looks like it was worth the wait. An expansion to one of Sony’s best games from last year is also coming, while Switch owners are getting a remake of two classic turn-based strategy games.

Lots of new titles to go over this month, so let’s take a look at the best games releasing in April 2023.

Star Wars Jedi Survivor’s new trailer sets up the story

Cal Kestis is hunting for a new home far from the Empire’s grasp.

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor’s latest trailer is out, giving fans a closer look at what’s coming in the highly-anticipated sequel.

On Monday, Electronic Arts (EA) and Respawn Entertainment released the first major story trailer for Star Wars Jedi: Survivor. It seems this game takes place roughly five years after the events of Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, continuing Cal Kestis’ journey. Apparently, he’s looking for a safe haven far from the Empire’s grasp – that’s a tall order, considering this would be when Emperor Palpatine was at the height of his power pre-A New Hope.

Check out the official story trailer for Star Wars Jedi: Survivor below. It doesn’t give away much of the plot, so thankfully, there’s nothing significant in the way of spoilers.

Star Wars: Jedi Survivor launches on April 28, 2023, for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. Originally slated for this month, EA recently delayed the game by a few weeks – seemingly for additional polish and bug-fixing work. That’s probably for the best since a few too many AAA titles have come out recently in less-than-stellar shape.

Respawn is also keen on turning Star Wars Jedi into a trilogy, though the company has yet to announce another installment officially.

Respawn wants to turn Star Wars Jedi into a trilogy

Star Wars Jedi director Stig Asmussen said the plan with Lucasfilms was always to make a trilogy out of the space games

Respawn’s Stig Asmussen said the team wants to turn Star Wars Jedi into a trilogy, and not just because the space game sold well originally. He told IGN the initial talks with Lucasfilm before Fallen Order released in 2019 always looked beyond the first story.

“We were already talking about the second game,” Asmussen told IGN. “I mean, frankly, we were talking beyond. And these are conversations that, when we’re breaking this story with Lucasfilm, it’s like: ‘Well, where are we going with the second game?’”

Asmussen said he always wanted to turn Jedi into a trilogy and already had ideas about how to structure Survivor, the tone of the sequel, how protagonist Cal Kestis could learn and grow, and even what might happen beyond that point.

Star Wars Jedi Survivor launches on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC on April 28, 2023. While Respawn and parent company EA haven’t announced a third Star Wars Jedi game, Asmussen said if it does happen, the team will likely build it using Unreal Engine 5, the same engine CD Projekt RED is using to rebuild The Witcher from the ground up.

Asmussen said the process would be difficult, though.

“I’m not going to say it’s going to be easy, he said. “I mean, we have a lot of proprietary things that we’ve warped the engine into doing what it does for Jedi right now, and we would have to retool some of that to get it to work on any new engine.”

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor has been delayed

EA and Respawn are pushing the release by roughly six weeks.

Star Wars: Jedi Survivor has a new release date: Apr. 28, 2023 – a little over six weeks from its initially planned launch.

On Tuesday, publisher Electronic Arts (EA) and developer Respawn Entertainment made the announcement regarding Star Wars: Jedi Survivor‘s delay.

“For the last three years, the Jedi team here at Respawn has poured its collective heart and soul into Star Wars: Jedi Survivor, and we are proud to say the next chapter in the tale of Cal Kestis is content complete,” reads a statement on Twitter. “In order for the team to hit the Respawn quality bar, provide the team the time they need, and achieve the level of polish our fans deserve, we have added six crucial weeks to our release schedule – Star Wars Jedi: Survivor will now launch globally on [Apr. 28, 2023].”

According to this statement, Star Wars: Jedi Survivor is in the polishing and bug-fixing stage, so all in-game content is complete. Respawn apparently wants the game to be buttery-smooth by launch, hence the little extra development time.

Star Wars: Jedi Survivor‘s initial release date was this coming March, which was announced at the 2022 Game Awards last year. It’s a direct follow-up to Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, which is currently free on PS Plus for subscribers.

EA announces Star Wars Jedi Survivor release date at The Game Awards

The exploits of Cal Kestis continue soon, as EA announces a Star Wars Jedi Survivor release date for the first quarter of 2023

The Star Wars Jedi Survivor release date was pretty much an open secret after it accidentally showed up on Steam ahead of The Game Awards 2022, but EA made it official now. The next stage of Cal Kestis’ journey will launch on March 17, 2023, for PC, Xbox, and PlayStation.

EA made the announcement alongside a brand-new trailer for the action-adventure game, the first since its cryptic announcement in the first half of 2022. In it, we see Cal taking on a number of new foes in fantastic Jedi style.

It seems the official information EA posted on Steam before removing it was accurate as well. Cal is a full-blown Jedi now, with all the pressures and imperial bounties that status entails and access to new Force powers and saber skills as well. He’ll need all the help he can get as he faces off against new enemies in the space game while traveling across the galaxy to locations both familiar and brand new.

Like Fallen Order before it, Jedi Survivor adopts an exploration style similar to Metroid and Castlevania, rewarding players for backtracking and using new abilities to overcome old obstacles.

Jedi Survivor pre-orders are open now, with a pre-purchase bonus that includes a Hermit outfit and lightsaber. There’s also a deluxe edition that features Rebel Hero and Scoundrel-themed outfits, themed after Han Solo and Luke Skywalker, respectively, with a skin for Cal’s robo-buddy and lightsaber as well.

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor might have a release date

The sequel to Jedi: Fallen Order could be arriving soon.

The highly anticipated sequel to Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order might have a release date. Briefly, the official Star Wars Jedi: Survivor Steam page listed a launch date of Mar. 16, 2023 (thanks, VGC).

That date is already gone, though – now replaced with a vague “coming soon” notice. Publisher Electronic Arts (EA) hasn’t made any announcement regarding Jedi: Survivor‘s release yet, so take all of this with a grain of salt. Heck, there hasn’t been much information on the game since its initial reveal trailer back in May 2022.

Gematsu managed to get a screenshot of the original Steam page listing, which you can check out below.

It’s also worth noting that during a recent EA earnings call, the publisher told investors that it plans to release a significant IP sometime before Mar. 31, 2022. Who knows what the game in question might be, but many believe it’s Jedi: Survivor. The aforementioned unveiling claimed Jedi: Survivor would be out in 2023, so there are multiple bits of evidence suggesting that the previous Steam listing was correct.

Again, nothing is certain until EA sets the record straight. Still, though, it’s looking like we might return to that galaxy far, far away soon enough.
