Lucasfilm wanted a much different Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order

Respawn’s Star Wars Jedi game was so popular that it’s getting a sequel soon, but Lucasfilm originally had some big doubts

Respawn’s Star Wars Jedi game was so popular that it’s getting a sequel soon, but Lucasfilm originally had some big doubts. Star Wars Jedi Survivor director Stig Asmussen told The Guardian that Lucasfilm expressed concern over making Cal Kestis, the protagonist, a Jedi.

“We wanted to do third-person action adventure, and we wanted to have a Jedi with lightsabers. And then they’re like – wait,” Asmussen said. “At that point, to Lucasfilm, the Jedi are like the holy grail. I mean, it’s something that they’re probably the most protective of, except for maybe Baby Yoda. So we had to kind of earn that. We had to go through a whole process of, why do you want it to be a Jedi? What do you want to do with the Jedi? They were really uncomfortable with Jedi.”

Asmussen said Lucasfilm tried convincing Respawn to change the focus and use a smuggler as a hero or even to make a first-person shooter starring a bounty hunter. However tantalizing the prospect of a Star Wars Bounty Hunter made by Respawn might be to some fans, it wasn’t what Asmussen wanted.

“I’m like, ‘well I think you have the wrong person for the job,” he said. “That’s not my background. My background came from God of War … I’ve never worked on a shooter, and you need a different team to do that.’ And eventually over time, we built that trust to the point where we ended up calling [the franchise] Jedi.”

Aside from combat, Asmussen said telling the Star Wars story from a fledgling Jedi’s viewpoint just fit with the team’s vision. Asmussen wanted to take players on a journey of growth, from being an isolated trainee who wasn’t even fit to be a Padawan to a proper warrior with a deeper understanding of the galaxy.

Jedi Survivor tells the story of what happens next, with a grimmer, more determined Cal facing the might of the Empire with a handful of allies. It launches for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC on April 28, 2023, and you can check out the final trailer now.

Jedi Fallen Order leads the January PS Plus games lineup

The PS Plus games lineup for January includes Star Wars, a popular indie game, and Fallout 76

A new month is coming up fast, and that means time for new PS Plus games. Sony announced January’s PS Plus games lineup in a new PlayStation Blog post, though only for the basic tier. The Extra- and Premium-tier offerings will be announced at a later date.

First up is Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, the first adventure of Cal Kestis, a fugitive Jedi-in-training who must learn the ropes and survive the Empire’s brutal persecution in the post-Revenge of the Sith era. The blend of Metroid-style exploration with combat inspired by Dark Souls was such a hit that EA and Respawn made a sequel – Star Wars Jedi Survivor – which launches March 17, 2023.

Next up is Fallout 76, Bethesda’s take on a live-service multiplayer game set in the Fallout world. While Fallout 76 was a bit of a wasteland itself when it first launched in 2018, several hefty updates have transformed the wilderness and added much more substance. Fallout 5 may be ages away, but 76 is as good a way as any to pass the time before Amazon’s Fallout TV show airs.

Finally is Axiom Verge 2, a bigger, bolder take on the original Axiom Verge that sets you loose in a sci-fi hellscape with a staggering range of abilities and an even more impressive array of secrets to uncover.

Star Wars Jedi Survivor may release earlier than we thought

EA might have teased a possible Star Wars Jedi Survivor release date in a recent earnings call

The Star Wars Jedi Survivor release date might be a bit closer than we expected, as it seems like EA might plan on releasing the long-awaited Star Warsi game sometime in the 2023’s first quarter. During EA’s recent earnings call, as Eurogamer first reported, the publisher told investors it planned on releasing a “major IP” before Mar. 31, 2022.

The possible candidates for this major IP are few in number. Most of EA’s major games already have set release dates, including Need for Speed Unbound and the Dead Space remake, which are launching in December and January, respectively. The new Skate game is currently early in development, so barring some unannounced project EA kept very close to its chest, that just leaves Star Wars Jedi Survivor.

Previously, EA only said Jedi Survivor would launch in 2023 and provided no anticipated date or even time frame. Since the game’s initial announcement trailer in May 2022, EA and Respawn have shown approximately nothing from Jedi Survivor – no gameplay, no lore or character teases, nothing.

Assuming the plan is to release Jedi Survivor in March 2023, EA might finally break that silence after Need for Speed launches on Dec. 2, 2022, and Apex Legends season 15 is well underway, when there’s less competition for attention.

Meanwhile, Star Wars challenges are back in Fortnite for a limited time, so grab your lightsaber while you can.

Star Wars: Fallen Order 2 might tie into the Obi-Wan Kenobi series, hints Ewan McGregor

The actor claims video game continuity will ‘match up’ with the show.

The hype for Obi-Wan Kenobi is damn near palpable, and Ewan McGregor hinted that there might be tie-ins with recent video games.

As reported by IGN, McGregor gave an interview on the Jimmy Kimmel show discussing Obi-Wan Kenobi. The actor claims that series director Deborah Chow “really knows [her stuff]” regarding the greater Star Wars universe, including games like Jedi: Fallen Order.

“All of the storylines have to …match up,” McGregor said. “[You] can’t have some fact in a video game that doesn’t match up to the movie.”

Fans are going bananas over this comment since Obi-Wan Kenobi and Jedi: Fallen Order take place around the same time in Star Wars canon — after Revenge of the Sith but before A New Hope. Not only that, the Jedi-hunting Inquisitors are the primary antagonists in the series and game too.

Obviously, McGregor could be talking about Battlefront 2 or any modern Star Wars game, but Jedi: Fallen Order is far and above the most popular.

Thus far, the only thing we know about Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order 2 is that it’ll likely be a new-generation exclusive and could release in 2023. Some reports claimed a reveal was coming at E3, but this year’s show was canceled. Respawn, the studio behind both Jedi: Fallen Order titles, is currently working on three Star Wars games.

Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order 2 is reportedly new-gen only, will release in 2023

Respawn’s next lightsaber-wielding adventure may not be on PS4 and Xbox One.

It sounds as though Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order 2 will launch in 2023 for new-generation consoles and PC.

In the most recent episode of Giant Bomb’s Grubbsnax, well-known games journalist Jeff Grubb spoke about Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order’s sequel (Thanks, VGC).

Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order 2 is going to be new-generation only, where it’s PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and then of course PC,” Grubb said. “One of the reasons that they’re going to be able to do that is because it’s not coming out until 2023. This game is for sure now not coming out until 2023.”

Given how old the PS4 and Xbox One are, it makes sense that Respawn would move away from last-generation consoles by now. Even if getting the PS5 or Xbox Series X|S is still challenging.

“It makes it easier to just disassociate yourself with those millions of PS4s and Xbox Ones out in the world when you are in 2023, and you’re going to have several months of making it very easy to get an Xbox Series X, probably a few months before now and then when it’s actually okay to get a PS5,” Grubb continues. “And then at the same time you can take advantage of it and do something that feels new.”

Grubb did say earlier this year that Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order 2 would get revealed before E3 2022, but with the show’s cancellation, who knows what’ll happen.

Aside from Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order 2, Respawn is also working on two other Star Wars titles.

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order 2 to allegedly get a reveal before E3 2022

An industry insider claims the follow-up is coming soon.

Respawn Entertainment’s Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order  was a break-out hit last console generation, and a sequel might be looming on the horizon.

On a recent Giant Bomb  stream, reporter Jeff Grubb claims that a follow-up to Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order  will allegedly get a reveal before E3 2022. Speculation is already running wild, as many theorize that  Respawn Entertainment’s  Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order 2  might be shown off on May 4, also known as Star Wars Day. Keep in mind that this is speculation on top of rumors about a potential sequel, so take it with a massive grain of salt.

The stream Grubb said all this on is currently behind a paywall, but games industry insider Nibel shared the details on Twitter.

It’s not hard to believe that a sequel is in the works, even if this is all hearsay. Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order  was one of the  highest-selling titles of 2020, so a follow-up is pretty likely.

Aside from adventures set a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, Respawn Entertainment is also known as the house that  built Apex Legends. The battle royale phenomenon recently made it on Steam’s shortlist for the most  popular titles of 2021.
