Will Power took to social media to offer his response to IndyCar’s penalties against Team Penske for improper use of push-to-pass power boost at St. Petersburg, which included a loss of 10 points for Power’s No. 12 Verizon Chevy alongside the disqualifications of the cars driven by teammates Josef Newgarden and Scott McLaughlin.

IndyCar noted that Power did not gain any competitive advantage by improper use of push-to-pass while his teammates were determined to have done so, leading to the points penalty rather than a full disqualification for the No. 12. However, the 12 team was also fined $25,000 and forfeited all prize money from the race, as did the team’s other two entries.

“I was disappointed to learn about the penalty that we received this week from IndyCar,” Power posted on Instagram. “There was an oversight by our team and I was unaware of the situation until it was brought to our attention following Long Beach.

“As per the rules, I did not utilize the P2P capabilities during any start or restart during the St. Petersburg race. While I accept the penalty, I want it to be known that I did nothing wrong and followed the rules. Now we move forward and my focus is on Barber.”

With the disqualification of Team Penske’s Josef Newgarden for his illegal use of push-to-pass power at St. Petersburg, Arrow McLaren has been awarded the victory with Pato O’Ward, who placed second on the road in the No. 5 Chevy.

The win represents a joyous moment for the three-car team which missed out on trips to victory lane in 2023 with O’Ward, Alexander Rossi, and former driver Felix Rosenqvist. It also marks the first IndyCar win at Arrow McLaren for Gavin Ward in the team principal role.

With Newgarden’s demotion, the No. 2 Chevy Penske driver falls from first to 11th in the championship. Penske teammate Scott McLaughlin, who placed third at St. Pete and was also disqualified, has dropped from 10th to 27th and last in the standings. O’Ward improves from sixth to fourth.

“It’s awesome to get a win and a real strong result for the amount of effort this team puts in,” O’Ward said. “This team is just full of an incredible group of characters and they have been grinding so hard to try and get results like this. And I think it’s the first of many hopefully for me in this role as a team principal. I was hoping to celebrate this first one for me a little bit different way in victory lane with all our team, but when you win, you win. So we will enjoy this.”

A few more dates on the next NTT IndyCar Series calendar have been confirmed via today’s release of IMSA’s wide array of 2024 schedules for its premiere and training series.

Although most of the offerings fall in places that were expected, IndyCar fans have additional dates to formally plug into their calendars, starting with the St. Petersburg Grand Prix on March 8-10 and the Grand Prix of Long Beach on April 19-21.

IMSA’s return to Detroit across the May 31-June 2 weekend follows the 108th Indianapolis 500 on May 26, and based on nearly a decade of IndyCar’s month of May cadence, the Indianapolis Grand Prix would be likely to run two weeks prior on Friday-Saturday, May 10-11 with Indy 500 qualifying up next on May 18-19.

A change of location for next year’s season finale was announced on Thursday with the Nashville Grand Prix moving to September 13-15, and according to the series, Laguna Seca — its soon-to-be former host of the last race — will remain on the schedule, but at a different point on the calendar.

As RACER recently revealed, the trip west to Monterey was being look at as a perfect solution to fill the extended gap between St. Petersburg and Texas, with Laguna Seca primed to become Round 2 on the schedule. However, a more recent update suggests March — when rainfall is prevalent along the California coast — is no longer under consideration for the event, which could push it to an early summer date in light of the busy IndyCar run from April through May.
