St. John’s at Seton Hall odds, picks and prediction

Analyzing Monday’s St. John’s at Seton Hall odds and lines, with college basketball expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The St. John’s Red Storm (10-7, 2-4 Big East) travel to Walsh Gymnasium Monday to take on the Seton Hall Pirates (12-5, 3-4). Tip-off is scheduled for 9 p.m. ET. Below, we look at the St. John’s vs. Seton Hall odds and lines, and make our expert college basketball picks, predictions and bets.

St. John’s welcomed Seton Hall Saturday and lost at home by 6 points as a 1-point underdog. Seton Hall G Myles Cale went for a game-high 21 points and F Alexis Yetna ended with 16 points and a game-high 15 rebounds.

St. John’s had just two players who reached double-digits in scoring and no one topped 13 points. St. John’s is just 6-11 against the spread (ATS) on the season, 2-4 ATS in conference play and 2-2 ATS as a road underdog.

Seton Hall is 8-8 ATS on the season but just 2-5 ATS in Big East play.

St. John’s at Seton Hall odds, lines, picks and predictions

Prediction

Seton Hall 72, St. John’s 66

Money line

PASS on the money line.

Big East basketball with two competent teams makes laying the price tag on the home favorite simply not worth it. Similarly, betting a road underdog that’s the inferior side doesn’t make much sense.

Against the spread

“LEAN” to ST. JOHN’S +7.5 (-115).

While they failed to cover at home a couple of days ago, it’s tough to win against the same team twice and we’re just asking them to hang close with the Pirates in this scenario.

Seton Hall has played 7 conference games in a row and only one has been more than a 7-point difference — a 15-point Pirates road victory against Butler. They’re just 2-5 ATS over their last seven games.

While the Pirates managed just 60 points on Saturday, they’re averaging 75.3 points per game in conference play. They’ll get back on track Monday and that should help keep this game competitive.

Over/Under

BET on the UNDER 150.5 (-107).

While St. John’s may score at a high rate, they were struggling offensively against Seton Hall Saturday.

Seton Hall has allowed opponents to shoot just 30.1% from deep on the season and its opponents average 66.7 points per game. Even in Big East play, where it hasn’t been great, it’s giving up just 73.6 points per game while scoring 74.7 points per game.

Seton Hall is just 7-9 O/U this season. While St. John’s is 9-8 O/U on the season, it’s just 3-3 O/U in Big East action.

Considering the recent meeting between these sides wasn’t even close to the Over, I’d rather bank on the Seton Hall defense coming to play at home.

St. John’s at Seton Hall: Three things to know

  1. St. John’s squeaked past Rider as 18.5-point favorites Tuesday with an 82-79 win. The Red Storm’s keys to the victory were their ability to control the glass—out-rebounding Rider 41-30—and quality performances from wings Julian Champagnie and Vince Cole.
  2. Seton Hall won its second straight by rolling Wagner 78-45 Tuesday. The Pirates defense smothered the Seahawks, holding them to 27% field-goal shooting and 15% (3-for-20) from behind the arc.
  3. Both were scheduled to play other Big East teams but COVID-19 forced those opponents to pause basketball activities. This is the second year on the job for St. John’s head coach Mike Anderson and the Red Storm lost both meetings with Seton Hall last season. They covered once against the Pirates.

St. John’s at Seton Hall: Odds, betting lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

St. John’s 78, Seton Hall 75

Money line (ML)

What St. John’s is missing in experience and size it can make up with pressuring the ball handler and getting out in transition. The Red Storm is sixth in the nation in steals per game and 10th in adjusted tempo.

Also, St. John’s moves the ball a lot more, averaging 18.5 assists per game (31st in the country) compared to Seton Hall’s 14 assists per game (151st). Ball pressure and tempo can minimize the Pirates’ size advantage.

lean ST. JOHN’S (+170) for a quarter-unit to maximize value because I am going to hit the spread harder.

Against the spread (ATS)

Money is flooding in on the Red Storm with 86% of the money wagered and 63% of the bets placed on St. John’s, according to Pregame.com. It has moved the line from the 7-point opener to 4.5 points.

The percentage of money wagered on St. John’s is key because that’s typically considered the sharp side of the market. The Red Storm’s swarming defense can always flip the momentum in the game and help them sneak in the backdoor if need be.

GIMME ST. JOHN’S +4.5 (-110) for 1 unit.

Over/Under (O/U)

St. John’s and Seton Hall have a combined 9-3 O/U record this year because both teams have issues defensively. The Red Storm are great at creating turnovers but are 286th in opponents’ effective field-goal percentage but the Pirates are ranked below St. John’s in defensive efficiency.

lean Under 150 (-110) for a half-unit.
