Seton Hall at St. John’s: Three things to know

  1. Seton Hall wrapped up its regular season on a 4-game losing streak, the last two by double digits, and failed to cover in six straight games. The Pirates’ last regular-season loss was to the Johnnies 81-71 Saturday.
  2. St. John’s became the 4-seed in the Big East Tournament and earned a first-round bye after its win over Seton Hall. The Red Storm’s win last week over the Pirates snapped a 3-game losing skid to their conference foes.
  3. The Johnnies won a few Big East season awards such as head coach Mike Anderson earning Coach the Year and PG Posh Alexander being named Freshman of the Year and a co-Defensive Player of the Year. Also, Seton Hall senior PF Sandro Mamukelashvili was co-winner of Big East Player of the Year.

Prediction

St. John’s 78, Seton Hall 72

Money line (ML)

With all due respect to the three awesome basketball players that split the Big East Player of the Year awards, Mamukelashvili included, St. John’s sophomore F Julian Champagnie is the best player in the conference.

Champagnie was 1st in points per game, free-throw percentage, offensive box +/-, 2nd in win shares and usage rate, 3rd in PER and tied for 6th in rebounds per game.

St. John’s upset Seton Hall last week without Alexander who’s been sidelined the past two games with a thumb injury. Well, Alexander has told the media he plans on playing Thursday and his defensive prowess gives opposing offenses fits.

Finally, while it’s technically not a true home game, St. John’s does have a leg up with the Big East Tournament being held at Madison Square Garden, where the Johnnies do play some regular-season home games.

Against the spread (ATS)

PASS on the spread unless it gets up to St. John’s (+2.5). At that point, I’d prefer just taking the points with the Johnnies as the wiser play.

Over/Under (O/U)

lean UNDER 152.5 (-110) for a tiny wager since the Under has cashed in three straight Seton Hall-St. John’s games and five of the past six.

However, I’m not bullish on the Under because St. John’s is tied for the highest cover rate in the Big East and a plus-6.3-point total margin, which is by far the most in the conference.
