No. 10 St. Edward loses to Massillon in top Ohio HS football showdown

For the second straight year, the Tigers have taken down the nationally ranked Eagles.

Paul Brown Stadium was the site of a top Ohio clash as No. 10 St. Edward (Lakewood) went up against Washington (Massillon) in a battle of unbeaten teams.

The Eagles were looking to reverse last year’s loss to the Tigers—the team’s only blemish on the 2022 calendar—but had to do so without junior QB Casey Bullock, who went down in the previous game against Cincy power Elder.

On the other sideline, a trending Washington Massillon squad was more than ready to repeat last year’s game, continuing the program’s success recently against the Division 1 Ohio champs.

In what could be considered a throwback of a game, it was a grind on the ground, with the Tigers scoring 15 unanswered points on 250 yards rushing while showcasing a stout defense.

The Eagles trailed deep into the second half, 15-6, before backup QB Thomas Csanyi connected on a touchdown pass to Brian Sullivan in the final minute.

But when the clock ticked down in the final seconds of the fourth quarter, it would be the Tigers securing the home victory, 15-13.

And though not necessarily an upset, the win indeed echoed through the national landscape, a resounding note that the 2023 Tigers should be considered in next week’s HSS Super 25.

(Message received, Tigers.)

Next up for Washington, the team welcomes a tough Delaware program— the Middletown Cavaliers.

Meanwhile, St. Edward will look to regroup at home against the River Rouge Panthers (Mich.)

VIDEO: High snap led to a maniacal scramble, wild touchdown for St. Edward

In one of the crazy plays of this early high school football season, St. Edward and Good Counsel fought for a scramble into the end zone.

In the opening minutes of St. Edward (Lakewood, Ohio) football’s game against Good Counsel (Olney, Md.), it was clear the offenses were still working out some early wrinkles.

The tempo was set for an inefficient offensive performance in the first half when one of the wackiest overthrown snaps and scrambles for the ball took place, one that resulted in the teams racing backward 40 yards as they fought for control all the way to the goal line and beyond.

In the end, the St. Edward defense managed to corral the ball even while multiple Good Counsel players got hands on the ball in the end zone.

This madness ended in the first touchdown of the game and the only St. Edward points in the first half. At halftime, the two teams were tied at seven points apiece.

St. Edward got rolling in the third quarter, scoring 14 unanswered points to take the lead entering the fourth. Currently 1-0 on the season, the Eagles are trying to pick up their second win and continue their pursuit to get their third championship in a row.

This is Good Counsel’s season opener. The Falcons went 8-3 last season.

MATCHUP

No. 18 Southlake Carroll (Texas) (11-0)

vs.

DeSoto (Texas) (9-2)

When: 11/22, 6:30 p.m. ET

Tale of the Tape: DeSoto may have been beaten twice this year, but both of those losses were one-point games. This team is just a couple breaks away from being undefeated. Southlake Carroll, though, is undefeated; the closest game was a 12-point win, and last week, the Dragons won by 78 points. They have been unstoppable behind sophomore quarterback Quinn Ewers and freshman running back Owen Allen. It will take a big performance from some DeSoto player to keep up: maybe cornerback Jabbar Muhammad or Devyn Bobby, or perhaps an offensive weapon like leading wide receiver Lawrence Arnold. More likely, it’ll take a big performance from several Eagles.
