MLB power rankings: Who’s up (Dodgers!) and down (Yankees) as September approaches

Here’s where every MLB team is at as September approaches.

August is nearly in our rearview mirrors after a wild trade deadline made some of the contenders stronger … and some sellers stronger for the future.

The playoff picture is still fuzzy, with some divisions mostly sewn up and others still up in the air. And the Wild Card? Well, it’s wild and will continue to be through the coming weeks.

So as we get ready for the final month of the season — yes, September is closing in fast, which means summer is nearly over! — it’s a good time to take a snapshot of the league with some power rankings of all 30 teams.

Let’s dive in, from 30 to 1, with the worst teams to the best:

MLB playoff picture: How each division is shaking out with 1.5 months to go

These playoff races are FAR from over.

The MLB trade deadline is far behind us. And while we’ve seen some teams looking like they could fall out of the playoff race, you just never know in mid-August — a franchise could reel off 10 straight wins and be right in the thick of it again.

So it’s a good time to take a snapshot now that it’s mid-August — the divisional races are FAR from over, and the same goes for the Wild Card, which we’ll include below as we look at the playoff picture. And THAT race has so many teams vying for the three spots in both the National and American Leagues.

5 MLB teams (Angels, welp) in danger of missing the playoffs

A look at who’s outside looking in as the postseason picture gets less fuzzy.

Sure, it’s not even the middle of August.

Weird things can happen in baseball, whether it’s a team with a large lead in the division dropping eight of nine games and suddenly seeing a squad behind them catch up (ask New York Mets fans about that), or a franchise you thought was out of it making a run (hello, 2023 Chicago Cubs!).

But taking a snapshot of the standings now will tell you a lot about who’s a contender or who’s a pretender. And we’re here to focus on the latter — if these five teams don’t do something in a hurry, it’s no postseason for them:

A look at where all 30 MLB teams are as August begins.

Welcome to August. The MLB season is now well into its second half.

And by the time the sun is going down on Tuesday, August 1, we’ll know some buyers at the 2023 MLB trade deadline who have gotten stronger, and some sellers are casting their eyes on 2024 and beyond.

So as we get ready for the final two months of the season — and in the calm before the storm that will be 6 p.m. ET on Tuesday — it’s a good time to take a snapshot of the league with some power rankings of all 30 teams.
