Massive whale emerges yards from shore, thrilling beachgoers

*UPDATE: It was reported Tuesday (Dec. 12) that the sperm whale has perished after it became stranded on a Perth sandbar.

A large sperm whale joined swimmers near the shore Saturday at Port Beach, Australia, generating concern that the mammal might strand.

The accompanying footage was captured by Ori Weiser, who announced via social media that the whale ultimately “swam away happy.”

Wishful thinking, most likely, because healthy sperm whales generally remain offshore in deep water.

Typical diving forays in search of prey extend 2,000 feet beneath the surface, but sperm whales are capable of diving to depths of more than 10,000 feet.

The whale might have been sick, injured, or disoriented. But as of Saturday night it had not stranded.

9 News Perth reported early Sunday that swimmers were asked to exit the water during the 50-foot whale’s appearance.

Weiser’s footage shows the whale just yards from shore and one clip shows a jetski rider following closely behind.

Sperm whales are the largest toothed whales on the planet and are found around the world.

According to NOAA Fisheries, the most significant threats to sperm whales are ships (vessel strikes), commercial fishing gear (entanglements), ocean noise (disorientation), oil spills and contaminants, and climate change.

Watch: Surfers attempt to push struggling whale back to sea

A young sperm whale that stranded Tuesday morning on New York’s Rockaway Peninsula has died after a valiant attempt by surfers to save the mammal.

The accompanying footage, captured by Timothy Moriarty, shows several surfers attempting to shove the 35-foot whale into deeper water against the tidal surge.

According to the Rockaway Times, the whale was spotted trapped on a jetty by Army Corps contractors from Michels at 7:30 a.m.

The contractors, who were on an unrelated job, helped surfers free the whale from the jetty. But the mammal did not swim off and later died.

Contractors used heavy equipment to haul the whale ashore as biologists reportedly were en route to perform a necropsy that could determine the cause of death.

The Rockaway Times uploaded several images of the incident to Facebook.

The stranding occurred in the Queens neighborhood of Arverne.

Thar she glows! Dramatic sunset reveals whale likeness

As the sun dipped beneath the Southern California horizon Thursday, a glowing shape materialized that resembled the profile of a sperm whale.

As the sun dipped beneath the Southern California horizon Thursday, a glowing shape that resembled the profile of a sperm whale materialized above the ocean’s surface.

Enough of a resemblance, anyway, to compel me to capture a few images from the overlook at Moonlight State Beach in Encinitas.

To ensure that I hadn’t visualized something that existed only in my imagination, I shared the images with a whale researcher, Alisa Schulman-Jainger, and asked her opinion.

“I does look kind of like a sperm whale with its mouth open,” she conceded.

The source of the whiteish glow outlining the whale shape might have been a contrail illuminated by the sun.

Hardly a spiritual revival of Moby Dick, but perhaps a likeness that fans of cetaceans, sunsets, and cloud formations will appreciate.
