Trio of Husker take the mound on Monday night

The Nebraska baseball team experienced a wild Monday night in Major League Baseball, with three former Huskers taking the mound for their respective teams. Matt Waldron, Cade Povich and Spencer Schwellenbach all earned a start on Monday evening.

Matt Waldron led the way on the night in his 16th start this season, pitching 6.0 innings for the San Diego Padres against the Washington Nationals. He finished the night with eight strikeouts while allowing five hits and two runs off 107 pitches.

On the season, Waldron has 84 strikeouts across 89.1 innings and has an ERA of 3.43. He received a no-decision in the Padres win.

Cade Povich started his fourth game for the Baltimore Orioles this season, facing off against the Cleveland Guardians on a late afternoon Monday. Povich pitched 5.2 innings and threw five strikeouts while allowing seven hits and three runs off 92 pitches.

On the season, he’s pitched 21.2 innings, thrown 14 strikeouts, and has an ERA of 4.15. Povich currently has a record of 0-2.

Spencer Schwellenbach earned his fifth start of the season and his second against the Washington Nationals. He pitched 5.0 innings for the Atlanta Braves and threw six strikeouts but allowed eight hits and four runs off 86 pitches.

On the season, Schwellenbach now holds a record of 1-3 on the season. He has thrown 25 strikeouts and has a 5.40 ERA across 26.2 innings.

Former Huskers clash in pitching duel in Major League Baseball

On the mound Wednesday night, Cade Povich squared off against Atlanta’s Spencer Schwellenbach.

Former Nebraska baseball players clashed in a pitching duel in Baltimore on the professional level. On the mound Wednesday night, Cade Povich squared off against Atlanta’s Spencer Schwellenbach.

Povich stepped to the mound first, pitching for the Orioles in his second career start. Schwellenbach, meanwhile, earned his third career start for the Braves on the night. Both pitched for 6.0 innings.

Baltimore ended the night with the win, taking down Atlanta 4-2 thanks to Povich’s outing. Povich threw 89 total pitches on the night, 63 strikes, and tallied six strikeouts while surrendering five hits and no runs. Schwellenbach also threw 89 pitches, 62 of them strikes. He threw three strikeouts and coughed up four hits, two runs, and two walks.

Povich has eight strikeouts through two games, 11.1 innings, and 189 pitches. Schwellenbach, now through three games, 262 pitches, and 15.2 innings, has thrown 12 strikeouts.

Atlanta Braves call up pitcher Spencer Schwellenbach

Spencer Schwellenbach has been promoted by the Atlanta Braves. 

A former Nebraska pitcher has been called up to the major leagues. The Atlanta Braves have promoted Spencer Schwellenbach.

Schwellenbach played for Nebraska from 2019 to 2021. In 2021, he was the Big Ten Player of the Year and the John Olerud Two-Way Player of the Year.

That season, he hit .284 with a .403 on-base percentage, six home runs, and 40 RBIs. He posted a 3-1 record, ten saves, and a 0.57 ERA in 18 appearances.

The Braves took the Michigan native with the 59th overall pick in the second round. He missed the 2022 season while recovering from Tommy John Surgery.

Schwellenbach is 4-1 with a 1.80 ERA with 51 strikeouts in 45 innings. He made six starts in High-A ball before being promoted to Double-A Mississippi.

Schwellenbach is scheduled to start Atlanta’s game onainst the Washington Nationals.  on WednesdayFirst pitch is scheduled for 6:20 p.m.
